Welcome to Tenafly Shukokai Karate, a family owned and operated dojo with a warm and friendly environment that is different from most martial arts schools. Our goal is not only to make you feel at home in our tranquil space, but also to make you feel like part of our family from the very first class you attend.

At Tenafly Shukokai Karate, roughly 450 students ranging in age from 3 ½ years old to Senior Citizens train with us. We teach a very traditional style of Japanese Karate, focused on discipline and the art of body mechanics. We are privileged to have many third and fourth Dans, who attend classes regularly and train alongside lower belts as well as share the responsibility of teaching classes with Sensei Gavin. Our inviting waiting area with video link to the class in session allows parents to relax and enjoy watching their children’s lessons without distraction.

Tenafly Shukokai Karate is a family business. Sensei Gavin is joined in teaching by his wife Sensei Linda, 3^rd Dan and son Steele, 1^st Dan. Additionally, all of our Trained Instructors are Black Belts with years of Experience. Under Sensei Gavin Armstrong’s tutelage, our Instructors are trained to convey our karate techniques to students of all levels.
