History

Established in 1916.

The 50-bed Michael Meagher Memorial Hospital opened on Sept. 14, 1916 under the direction and operation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Asked by the estate of Michael Meagher, who was part of the early growth of Texarkana, the Sisters opened the hospital with a staff of 10 physicians, one dentist, six Sisters of Charity, and 10 nurses. In 1948, a newly constructed 127-bed «St. Michael Hospital» was dedicated to the service of God.

The Sisters’ dedication to service — and bold vision — led to the development of our present-day, 129-acre campus located just off I-30 between Summerhill Road and Cowhorn Creek Drive in Texarkana, Texas.
