History

Established in 1983.

Al Copeland was born and raised in New Orleans, coming from poverty and living in the St. Thomas projects as a child. Al Copeland tested himself early, striving to be more than just another kid on his block. With visions of grandeur entering the young man’s thoughts, he quickly established himself among co-​workers as the guy who could do everything faster and better than the other employees. Al’s ambition, drive, and desire to be ‘the best’ became his single, motivational factor that would in time vault him to the top. Through hard work & dedication at age 16, he worked two jobs and saved enough money to open his first business at age 18. A 12 X 24 donut shop called Al’s Tastee Donuts that he expanded to three donut shops.

Al became interested in the fried chicken business and he started to develop recipes at home, which he continually tried on his kids and family. From that came spicy fried chicken, which lead to the founding of Popeye’s Famous Fried Chicken on June 13, 1972. Al found
