Don’t go to this place horrible customer service I called ahead they told me to come in and let me drive all the way from Simi Valley just to tell me I had an hour wait because a party of 16 came in and they rather take the party of 16 instead of my party of six So we left and went to Ken of Japan

If I could give negative stars I would in a heartbeat! Growing up in TO, this was one of our restaurant of choices for family get togethers, birthdays and other celebrations. Now living in the bay area I always have Cho Cho Sans on the brain when making a weekend trip back home. This past weekend that is exactly what happened. We made the 6 hour trek to visit with family for the weekend. As always, one of my must do’s was to grab dinner here. My Grandmother called and made the reservation for a party of 5 adults 1 child + 1 highchair(they specifically asked her how many kids) Well, we arrive about 10 min. early and are lead to a table pretty quickly. The rest of the people at the table had already been seated & served beverages. There are only 5 spots at the table open, back against a wall pretty pretty crammed. We need a total of 6 chairs & room for highchair. We point this out to the hostess who is attempting to seat us, but she insists we are wrong and points while counting out loud the # of chairs. She says«6» Apparently math is not her thing, she has the nerve to say that there are enough seats yet again. We politely show her while adapting her method of counting out loud and pointing to ourselves 1,2,3,4,5,6PLUS room for the baby’s highchair. She becomes flustered, and walks to that side of the table where she would like us to be seated and begins the counting again but this time while touching the back of each chair because certainly we must be wrong. When she reaches 5, she becomes flustered and says she need to get the manager. about a minute maybe 2 minutes later, while we stood there awkwardly in the dining room near the tables of people trying to enjoy the show and food, she returns to tell us that our reservation was for 5:30 and that we are early and please go back to the dining room and wait until 5:30 to be seated a new table will be available shortly. I would like to point out that there was a tone of annoyance in the way she spoke, and she even rolled her eyes. my grandmother made a comment as we walked back to the entry seating area that she must have had something in here eye(my grandma’s way of pointing out that she rolled her eyes at us) We waited for about another 5 minutes or so and male host came and gathered us letting us know our table was ready. We followed him directly around the corner to the 1st table. This timer we were the 1st to be seated. We took our seats and were brought a highchair for the now sleeping baby. Another few minutes go by and the guy who seated us returns to the table. He told us that our reservation was for 5, and that we were not taking up 7 spots at the table(6 chairs to be exact) My Grandma speaks up and says she had made the reservation, and specifically said 5 adults, 1 child +1 baby/highchair. he says ok & leaves. Moments later he returns and says that his manager said we need to sit in 5 chairs because thats what our reservation was for! WHYISITTHISPLACEISFULLOFDYSFUNCTIONALSTAFFTHATCAN’T COUNT?! At this point we are getting pretty pissed off. I now tell him that the only way we can sit in 5 chairs is if we share a chair or put my 9 year old son on my lap, and that is not acceptable again pointing out that we need all 6 chairs I demand to speak to the manager, he agrees to get him. We stay in the chairs we are in while waiting for the manger. This has to be a miscommunication on the staffs part. The host returns again, and says that he told his manager that we want to speak with him but that he is busy & will be over when he can. Then he follows that statement by telling us that his manager said they need the 6th chair back from us though because they need to keep the 3EXTRA seats open for walk-ins. My mom now starts to loose it. She yells at him and says we have a God Damn reservation & you want us to give up a seat & what stand, so you can give it to a possible walk in?! WTF?! He walks away with a smirk on his face and heads back the front entry area where we see him talk to an older guy in a hawaiian shirt while pointing our direction through the glass window behind us. They start laughing and are joined by «Ms.1,2,3 count out loud» He returns while we are ordering drinks from a waiter & brings 2 ladies to table and seats them. I now demand to speak to the manger for a 2nd time. The manager finally arrives and says«what’s the problem?» No Hi, or sorry! We tell him that we YEARS& that clearly there was a mix up but we made a reservation & have been treated horrifically. He repeats the words again«what’s the problem?» My mom stands up & says forget it, we’re leaving! he says good get out of my restaurant, go home. My mom turns around and says how dare you! My grandmother beyond embarrassed, is being helped up & out by my cousin when the manager reaches for my mom physically push her! My cousin intervenes & the manager told him to F off!!! NEVEREVEREVER again will we return. Such a shame!

I made a reservation for a birthday party for approximately 30 guests. I made this reservation in the first week of February for the 22nd and there was no problem. I get a call the 19th that a deposit is required, $ 30 per person which would be $ 900 ! No mention of a deposit was ever made before, and I would hardly call paying full price in advance, a ‘deposit’ ! So after 30 plus guests had RSVP’d already, I found myself changing the venue to a much more accommodating restaurant ! Your loss Cho Cho San, you definitely wont be seeing any of us again ! A warning to all others making larger reservations here.

At one time, this was my favorite place. Last time we ate there, our baked scallops weren’t even cooked. Sent it back and the same thing happened. When we ordered the rock and roll, the scallops again weren’t cooked. They must have new management as this place is going down hill. No one even smiles there and our sushi chef didn’t even look at us to ask us if we wanted something else. We were told that the guy making the scallops was new, and I don’t’ really care. Worst food ever and horrible service. The pictures show how the scallops should look when cooked correctly. To send your order back 2 times, is not ok. What a waste of money.

Been coming here for 15 years. The place changed management and with it, cooking and food quality went downhill along with the service. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere

This is our go to place for a special occasion. The kids love watching the chefs at the teppan tables. They are truly entertaining, and have a great dramatic flair. The New York steak and Ahi tuna combination are fantastic. The dinners come with soup, salad which typically is lettuce and drowned in dressing, shrimp appetizer, grilled mushrooms, grilled vegetables, and a choice of steamed or fried rice. Extremely filling and usually enough for leftovers for the next days lunch. For a birthday celebration, they charge five dollars to come out with a candle in a small dessert and placing a rubber sumo style and robe on the birthday person. They really should not charge for this.

Growing up in Thousand Oaks this is the only place I will get sushi. The happy hour specials are where it’s at. Although over the last year I am not sure what happened if they changed chefs or what but they have been slacking. Food is mediocre at best. I mean they don’t even have seared albacore? Ya I know. The staff is always super friendly but it’s not like they go out of there way to make your experience extraordinary. And at times I have had to ask for service such as more water, ponzu sauce and even more food off the menu. I hope they step up there game to how it use to be. I miss the old cho cho son

I ordered the New York steak with tempura shrimp-not bad, a little bland. The miso soup and steamed edamame were tasty. It was very busy for a Monday night, so that’s a good sign. Our server, Francesca, was excellent! There were about 12 of us and she took good care of us for almost three hours! Super friendly and attentive-thank you, Francesca!

As a former resident of the Conejo Valley, I have been coming to Cho Cho San for well over 25 years. Tonight, we had dinner here for my husband’s birthday and my brother in law’s birthday. We made a reservation for a party of 7. They sat down 2 people at a table right before us and then sat us at our own table a few minutes later. About a minute after the host seated us, he came back to our table and said that he was very sorry, but our table didn’t have a chef and they would need to move us to a different table. I asked if they were moving us to the table with 2 people already sitting at it and he said yes. I told him absolutely not, as at least one or two of our party would be sitting at the part of the table that connects to the other table.(You can’t see anything or even have a conversation with someone if you sit there.) He looked annoyed and walked away. Hey dude, guess what? It’s Sunday and not my problem if you don’t have enough servers or chefs. Poor planning on management’s part. We then waited for a good 10 minutes for someone to come take our drink order. The manager finally came over to do that and then about 10 minutes later, the drinks finally arrived. The waitress looked annoyed and basically spilled her tray of drinks everywhere. The soup and salads finally came out and I was missing my soup. I asked the waitress if the soup she handed me was for me or my daughter and she rolled her eyes and said, «oh, I must have left one in the back.» Yeah, I’m sure someone was probably spitting in it, since I’m the one who refused to switch tables. But whatever. Once I got my soup, that was the last we saw of the waitress. She never came to clear our soup and salad bowls, so they sat in a big pile next to my husband. Nobody was rude to her or anything… she just had a piss poor attitude the entire time. The food was good… the chef did a good job cooking everything. My main complaint is regarding the service. It was probably the worst service we’ve ever had there, and the entire party of 7 agreed. We’ve all been here many, many, many times. Not sure what’s happened to Cho Cho San, but I sure hope they get their act together, cause tonight was not the best experience and I don’t really feel like going back any time soon.

Not sure what has happened with this restaurant. I’ve been here several times in the past over the years and the sushi has always been decent. Not really authentic Japanese, but tasty. Started off with some gyoza which came with a dipping sauce that must have been 50% chili oil. Then, had agedashi tofu which tasted like they were premade and fried to order. The rice in the nigiri sushi was on the dry side, not very high quality and didn’t have any hint of sushi rice vinegar mixed in it. We also ordered some rolls with names I had forgotten, because they all tasted the same and all very bland… probably because they were also made with the same unseasoned rice. Not sure I’ll be coming back as Whole Foods and Bristol Farms have better tasting sushi now than here. I would suggest that the Owner and Managers take a trip to Torrance to one of food courts in any of the larger Japanese markets(Mitsuwa or Marukai) and compare what they are serving versus what can be had there so they can make some adjustments.

Chris was my sushi chef yesterday and Ferby was my waitress-I cannot tell you enough how fabulous everything was. I ordered the rock and roll hand roll, then baked muscles, baked eel and rainbow roll… then of course two more rock and roll hand rolls, they forgot my bowl of rice but a small thing compared to the fabulous service that I received. I absolutely love this place, however, the cho cho san in Reseda is not a fav of mine any longer and declined in service from freshness to screwing up on the bill, overcharging-so Thousand Oaks is where it’s at for some pretty terrific service and very fresh sushi. Thanks everyone, you made last night enjoyable.

This place is simply amazing. The sushi is super consistent and simply amazing. The servers r super attentive. Special albacore and chefs albacore are simply amazing. I’ll drive all the way from oxnard to enjoy this restaurant. There’s like 5 spots in oxnard and I won’t go there. The teppan side I’ve tried only once but it was way better than bennies. Way cheaper too. Thanks chocho. Will b back in 2 weeks for my moms bday.

This place is pretty cool for birthdays to do the teppan grill. We had a really good chef last time who had some new tricks. The sushi is really good too.

Dined here tonight and it was the worst dining experience ever!!! The girl who took our order must have been new because she was clueless. How do you get our orders wrong when you are writing it down? We were a party of 10 and most of us ordered filet. The quality of meat was terrible and tasted foul. The chef was not able to cut it into cubes and the meat looked chewed up!!! The chicken was dry and tasteless. To add injury to insult… we spent over $ 300 and when my niece who ordered a kids meal asked for a toy, they wanted to charge us an additional $ 2…are you kidding me!!! When we brought our concerns to the managet, he did not care. So I am taking my business elsewhere. So disappointed.

Food is always amazing whether its the sushi or the teppan, I could eat here all the time. I come here probably once a month or once every two months. Usually I get sushi and order it take-out because the service isn’t always the best. However if you are getting Teppan, the people in that room seem to go above and beyond to make sure your experience is a great one. I love the shrimp and steak combo. Steak is always cooked to my liking, and the shrimp has a lot of lemon used and I love it. Sushi has always been delicious, fresh and filling. I’ve ordered so many different items over the ast few months I can’t begin to remember them but I have never had a bad tasting roll there.

The absolute WORST sushi in Thousand Oaks and there is a lot of competition for bad sushi restaurants in the Conejo Valley We took the kids and my niece and nephew who are all over the age of 17. None of us could believe how awful it was but we were stuck because we only had a limited time to eat due to other commitments that night. We would have been better off going to Calabasas for outstanding food instead of being poisoned by Cho Cho San. Don’t ever go here unless you want to have food poisoning for 2 days. Gross, disgusting and VILE!!!

This review is long overdue. But I guess I doesn’t really matter wether I write a review because a good restaurant will be successful irrespective of reviews. This is one such. Located conveniently on Thousand Oaks blvd with ample parking, this place offers one of the best sushi experience for its guests. It is actually one of the bigger sushi places around here and also has a separate place for teppanyaki style as well. I am yet to try that one but only heard fantastic things. One day I shall. By far the freshest sushi. I have tried mostly all of their rolls and love it. Their 911 and fire rolls are to die for. The backed scallop melt in your mouth magic. You should try out their sishito peppers, it’s just out of this world. While the food is good and people are generally ok, I think they can most certainly improve in the area of general hospitality. The kids menu is excellent and my son is always waiting to finish his food for a Free toy that he gets every-time. I think this is easily on of the best sushi places around. Fresh flavorful and the place is very tastefully done and I love coming here with my wife and kid. They love it and we have never been disappointed. Love it!

Half sushi half teppan. The two sections of the restaurant have very different vibes! The sushi side is almost like a japanese sports bar. TVs are mounted in most corners of the restaurant and it gets pretty loud! I was sitting in what seemed to be an annex like section that was added on to make more seating. Lots of families in here — a baby was screaming for part of the meal… but comes w the territory. Not too bad. Pretty extensive sushi roll menu that they categorize by fish type. Specialty rolls are on average around $ 12.50/roll. There are combination dinners that are reasonably priced. The steak option was surprisingly tender and juicy. Tempura option was decent — the batter could’ve held up better on certain items but it was crispy and light, which is good. Hurricane roll: albacore inside and out with garlic chips, black pepper crust and ponzu sauce. Good but nothing crazy special. Tarzana: I had mixed feelings about this one. Inside: eel, cream cheese, asparagus, cucumber? Outside: avocado and eel sauce. The combination wasn’t bad because it felt almost healthier bc of the asparagus crunch but was almost too creamy in texture bc of the cream cheese AND avocado. Service was decent. The servers were attentive and prompt but not that delicate. They would drop plates in a rush and one girl put the sashimi platter for the combo so close to the edge of the table that half of it was hanging off of the side! I felt like it could’ve fallen off the table! Overall would come again. Reasonable prices and decent food. Loud ambiance.
