Ole Mink Farm Recreation Resort

Love it. I stayed with mydaughter amd grandkid at th Phenix cabin. Planing to come again, nice place for families. Staff very helpful and friendly

I loved the area this campground is located in and the website… but we never actually got to stay… From the getgo, it was pretty clear that it was place that catered only to families with kids. They actually asked me to list the relationship status of all the campers! We wanted to rent a cabin for 4 adults… It was almost double the price than if we had been a couple traveling with 2 or 3 kids. When I spoke to them, they didn’t seem to be able to offer any explanation as to why…

I’m always on the lookout for great places to get away from it all that are a quick drive from NYC and not too hard on the pocket, because if I want to spend real money, why not just do a deal on Cheap Caribbean or something? A good cabin is hard to find, especially close to NY and for under $ 200 a night. Enter Olé Mink Farm in Maryland, located about 3 – 4 hours drive from Jersey City, it’s not too much of a pain to get there, and once you are there you really feel as though you have gotten away from the city. Located in the Catoctin mountains and State Park, there are lots of hiking trails 5 minutes from your cabin, and shhhh, don’t tell anyone, but Camp David is not far away either. Another bonus of the location is Baltimore and DC are about hour’s drive, and the town of Fredrick is a 15 min. drive away.
The Olé Mink Farm Resort is a family affair, and that really comes through. Everyone we interacted with was so nice and welcoming. There are different size cabins; we went with the Hide and Seek cabin, which is a studio and perfect for two people. The cabin has a full kitchen with everything you need to cook some great meals. I loved that they not only included essentials (silverware, plates, and pots) but also had gadgets like a vegetable peeler, casserole dishes, and a potato masher. This cabin also has a small dining table, sofa, tv, gorgeous fire place, a pretty four poster bed, a small balcony, and a nice two person soaker tub. Everything in the cabin looked recently renovated and it was very clean. Outside of the cabin there was a fire-​pitt with a grill rack and a nice swing bench, this would have been the perfect place to hang on a summer night! The resort provides fire wood and matches. We had such a great stay with the Olé Mink Farm Resort and will definitely be back again!
Things to note:
— Soaker tub was great, but the water heater was not big enough to keep the hot water flowing into the tub past the half full mark.
— WiFi is available but I was not able to connect. Cell phone service was a little spotty, but I was ok with that. If you HAVE to be connected to work or something this may not be the best choice for you.
— You have to bring your own sheets and towels. They provide a comforter.
— Our cabin was great and exceeded my expectations, and I had high expectations. That said, this is definitely not a remote cabin where you are surrounded by wilderness. Open your front door and you see trees… And other cabins and RV Campers, so if you’re looking for total seclusion, keep looking.
— let me save you some disappointment, there are not any minks on the property. I keep looking for them, but they never materialized.

We stayed in the «Phenix», for the Easter Weekend.
Overall, a great stay in a nice, warm, clean cabin. There are only two things I didn’t care for in this stay, which I will go over later in this review.
The Campground:
The campground is a smaller one that is a little packed. It is an RV park, and the RVs are close together on a hillside. There are several cabins from 1 to 4 bedroom. The bathroom facilities attached to the office building are clean and nice. There is a electronic keyed gate as you come into the campground making it so not just anyone can get in, but you can come and go as you please.
The Cabin:
Our Phenix cabin was very nice indeed, with attention made to the smaller details like plenty of wood for the natural, wood burnig fireplace, as well as kindling and fire starters. The entire hexegonal cabin was well setup, clean, and had everything you need. A nice large bathroom, a large shower stall that gave you a hot shower, a fully equipped kitchen with pots and pans, microwave, gas range, full size refridgerator, electric base board heat, a screened in porch, an outside seating area with a fire ring, and two small bedrooms.
The town of Thurmont:
This is a very small little town, with no really nice restaurants we could find. However, it did have a nice Weiss grocery store, as well as the standard fast food places like, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Wendys, and Roy Rogers. There are a few restaurants but they aren’t much to write home about.
Catoctin Mountain Park:
This park, as well as the Frederick water shed woods that attach to Catoctin Mountain are by far some of the nicest woods within 30 miles of Westminster, MD. The Appalacian Trail runs right through the park area, and there is a nice, state run campground down Catoctin Hollow road with a big lake, the Cunningham Falls State Park, and even a Catoctin Zoo, if you get tired of hiking.
FYI:
The campground is run by the owners who tell me they have had that campground for the last 48 years. The owners as well as thier sun were very nice people, and they gave us great, friendly service.
Caution:
Be aware, they do take a 50 dollar refundable deposit upon checkin, which they send back to you 15 days after your stay.
Negatives:
There were only two things I didn’t care for.
1. The Drop ceilings in the bedrooms, although there was nothing wrong with them, wood would have been nicer.
2. There was a hole in the shower stall above the shower spicket, but that wasn’t an issue either
With all considered an excellent stay!

Update as of April 5^th: After showing the owners of Olé Mink Farm the video I made that included showing the shifted shower fixture with the whole that lead to the back room, they promply fixed it and thanked me for showing them. Customer service like that is hard to find these days!
