History

Established in 2010.

With 47 years of combined fashion retail experience under their belts mother Nancy and daughter Emily have joined together to bring you Uptown Cheapskate — Salisbury MD in Oct 2010 and Uptown Cheapskate –Timonium MD in Aug 2011 and Uptown Cheapskate — Rockville MD coming Fall 2012.

From new store build outs to buying trips to NYC and Miami, these two have really done it all in the fashion world. Marketing plans to in-​store floor layouts, they’ve got it covered. There’s no hesitation when it comes to revising a budget or merchandising a sales floor, their years of experience make it all a no-​brainer!

Meet Rachael, the Store Manager at Uptown Cheapskate Timonium. She’s got a keen eye for fashion and a flare for customer service! If you were to shop Rachael’s personal closet you’d find a great mix of brands! Currently her Michael Kors watch, Chloe sunglasses, B. Makowsky bag and Frye boots are her go to accessorizing staples. She loves mixing classics from the Gap, Banana Republic and J. Crew with hip trendy finds from H&M, Forever21 and Nordstrom. She is a beach girl at heart (she grew up just outside of Ocean City MD!) so you’ll also find fun colorful pieces from Roxy, Obey and Billabong. Let’s face it, despite Macklemore’s catchy tune, going to a thrift store is crap shoot. There is a a TON Of stuff to weed through hoping to find one or two items. It can be a time suck.
But not at this place, Everything is recent style, arranged by size and color and type of clothing and there are many, many high end brands.
The staff was friendly and the store layout was just awesome.
Definitely going back, loved it. Plus there was this Michael Kors purse that I saw…

Shopping at Uptown can be described, much like the occasional shirt for sale, as irregular. Some days you leave with a bag [or three] full of fantastic fashion forward, finds — other days empty-​handed.
The staff are a hodgepodge of personalities; many friendly, kind and eager to take on the role of a personal shopper. A few choose to behave like stereotypical angst-​ridden teenagers, complete with a misanthropic attitude and the interpersonal charm of an arid cactus.
I’ve always enjoying hunting down what I might term a bargain so discovering a like-​new garment I can add to my wardrobe for a fraction of it’s FMV (Fair Market Value) delights me. Not finding something is just part of the process.
Let’s take a moment to discuss their buying program. Yes, cash offers are often pennies on the dollar compared to an items original retail price. However, you as the potential seller have negligible responsibilities and a minimal time investment. The process is easy: drop off items, fill out a short form, return later that day and review any offer. If you accept any portion of their offer you are given the choice of 1) cash in hand 2) store credit which is immediately available.
You would probably get a higher price using eBay, a consignment shop, Craigslist, any of a dozen apps, but the responsibilities of advertising, interacting with buyers, shipping/​arranging meetings, processing sales, feedback, and everything else involved in acting as the seller is squarely on your shoulders. So for a fair apples-​to-​apples comparison (their offer vs. your potential net profit), you must take into consideration the value of your time.
Lastly, it may be more financially advantageous to donate your items and apply the tax deduction — such details should be discussed with your accountant and financial professional (s).

I would not recommend shopping here, nor would I recommend selling your used clothing here. This place looked like a junk store. No great labels that I could see and the shoes were so gross and overworn. If you want to try and sell them your clothing, be prepared to accept next to nothing for your items.

Very hit or miss. I’ve gone in with a bag of quality stuff and they’ve taken most of it and I’ve received $ 90 cash or, yesterday for instance, I came in with a bag of similar quality clothing and shoes and they took maybe two things and I received $ 20. Definitely try and go on a day/​time when they aren’t busy, call ahead to check, they’ll pay more attention to your stuff. Waited 3.5 hours for them to process my stuff when I was quoted 2 hours. I get it, they were busy, it happens. Was mildly insulted when they returned my bag almost entirely full but still gave me the same canned response as always: «we are giving back just a few things but we found a lot of great stuff we loved.» Really? They have their good days and bad days. Will be back, but not anytime soon to this location.

Such a love/​hate with this store. I love the random pieces that they carry and most of the time I end up buying some things. However, I hate their customer service and hangers! The people working are super unfriendly and come off way too cool to chat with you. The hangers don’t hold the clothes either and they pack way too much stuff on the racks. It’s a messy challenge to shop. They also sell crappy used old navy or forever 21 clothes which doesn’t make sense at all. Stick to higher end better quality pieces, put some rubber on the hangers, and retrain your staff about customer service!

Easily the nicest 2nd hand store I’ve ever been to. Great selection of clothes and sizes. Prices are great, running from about $ 8-​$ 20 for shirts. There is a clearance section as well as additional sales depending on when you go.
Staff is friendly and helpful. The store is very clean and well organized by clothing type, size, and color. I’ll be bring friends here to shop.

I went in here with a shopping bag full of designer clothes most new with the tickets still attached. I will admit that some of the items were several years old but still on trend and because they were so well made they were truly classic pieces. They took nothing but an Old Navy dress and a Love culture tank, the cheapest things in the bag. In the future I will just donate all of my things to our church at least there they will be appreciated. I would not shop there either when you could buy new for a few pennies more.

I don’t shop much and HATE malls, so this is my favorite place to bulk shop every now and then to beef up my wardrobe. I usually shop the sale section, but occasionally find stuff in the regularly priced section. Where else can you spend $ 91 on 13 pieces of clothing? Funny thing is, I could’ve kept trying on more and buying more, but I was tired or shopping at that point. haha!

When they first opened, I was very excited because they were offering lots of higher end consignments (J.Crew, etc). This is no longer the case. If I wanted cheap crap from H&M/Forever21, I would go to H&M/Forever 21. Those stores serve their purpose, but the clothes never hold up well and are definitely not worth consigning. It seems like that is all they are offering the last few times I’ve been there. Poor choice for anyone looking for nicer options.

I went in with high end clothes and they barely looked at them. The people who work there are not friendly. I won’t be going back to sell my clothes or to shop.

I’m sure the lower rated reviews are from sellers. I, myself, was hesitant to sell my clothes to this store as I have had very little success at consignment shops (*cough* Plato’s Closet), and I have that Ebay is a better option if you have the patience. But since I didn’t have the energy to upload pictures of two bags worth of clothes, plus several pairs of shoes, I gave Uptown a shot.
I get to the store and before I even enter I see things in the window I would be interested in buying– good sign! They told me the wait would be at least an hour and a half but luckily I did not have to wait into store like others require you to. Oh and the store is very clean, the sales people very friendly, and there was tons of merchandise within eyesight that I wanted to buy.
I ended up leaving for over 2 hours and found out that they would offer me $ 40 or $ 50 in store credit (they accepted about half of my items). I was satisfied with that and accepted the cash. One thing I noticed when I got home (and I wish they had told me that) is that I received an email as soon as they did my transaction letting me know it was ready and the amount they would offer– holy smokes! Talk about great customer service. Uptown you are a gem! Please do not turn into the dusty sh-​t hole that is Plato’s Closet.
I will be back to buy and sell!

Recently let my teenager bring in a bag of clothes to resale. All of it was name brand but they only took 5 pairs of Hollister shorts and gave her $ 6. Really pathetic and if I would have known they only took the shorts then I would’ve just donated them to Goodwill instead. It wasn’t until we got home that we found out what they took – they don’t even bother telling you what was bought back. Would not recommend selling anything to this place; I felt like they cheated her and you can definitely get a better deal by donating to charity and take the tax credit instead. I’m so disgusted that I refuse to even let my daughter shop there again, much less sell anything.

I just went in with a bunch of name brand stuff and they took NONE of it!!! I was also told that I would have to wait 30 minutes and waited 45 minutes in the store before going up to see what the deal was. I put my phone number on the card and you can’t call me when you’re done looking through my things? I have been here twice and am never coming again. They never take ANYTHING and I’m not giving them rags! What a waste of my time!!!

I have been here approximately 5 times to sell my items and each time has been a great experience. The staff is friendly, courteous, and professional. The store is clean.
While they haven’t taken everything I bring to them, I’m always thrilled because I’m able to unload clothing, handbags, and shoes that I no longer want. These are pieces that I would otherwise give away or donate, so any money I get for them is a bonus. I also like that I can drop my items off and come back later in the day to pick up my money and the items they couldn’t take. I’ll keep coming back!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! You can get all the current styles for a fraction of the cost of what they are selling for everywhere else. Whether you need something cool casual or something for a night out on the town, they’ve got you covered! And the best part is… if you only need it once, you can sell it back… how cool is that?!?
I’ve gotten entire wardrobes for just over $ 100!
I really love the fact that due to the model of the store that each time I go they have an all new supply of clothes… that’s probably why I go so much.
They staff is all super friendly.
I really, really like how every day they post new arrivals, and outfit ideas on their Facebook Page.

This place is fit for teenagers an college students. Agreed if you are over 27 don’t bother.
They have cheap clothes.
Also don’t bother consigning. Got a terrible deal here but a great deal at a better and upscale place.

I’m one of those people that NEVER finds anything at thrift stores and not only did I find something… it was a J. Crew jean jacket!!! for only $ 19! I wanted to cry tears of joy. They have a LOT of clothes/​shoes and I like that you don’t need an appointment to sell clothes and it’s a lot nicer that any other sell back or thrift store I’ve been in before. The girls working were nice and helpful. So ehh. I’m a fan.

I scored a calvin klein sweater, banana republic sweater, tanktop, necklace and blouse for $ 50. The items on the shelf range for extremely used to new with tag items, so you have to dig, but there were a lot of nice things in there, and the prices are right!
I also like that if you don’t need a bag, that donate money to a charity of your choice.
There are four 5-​star reviews that have been filtered. Don’t let the bad ratings from the other peeps keep you from checking this place out! The poor ratings are all related to SELLING stuff and not buying stuff. Give this place a try! There are good things to be found!!!

$ 145 for four dresses and suede Steve Madden boots? I’m sold. Love, Love, Love this ‘resale boutique’ in Timonium (conveniently located next to delicious Chipotle).
Uptown Cheapskate is new to the area, and I stopped in for the first time off a friend’s referral. The store is really big for a consignment store, and immaculately clean and merchandised. But more importantly, they had awesome clothes!
I scored literally 4 dresses — a Roxy, Threads, French Connection, and a Mossimo, for about $ 15 each (the Mossimo was probably $ 8). I tried on a pair of perfect Frye boots that were tempting at $ 100, but ended up with perfect knee-​high brown Steve Maddens that still had the original price tag (of $ 148!).
The customer service was great, and the girls (as other Unilocalers commented) were knowledgeable about the product and super stylish. I liked the mix of styles there, and will be back to snag some work-​appropriate stuff soon!
