Hong Kong Bakery And Deli

What a delight! It’s so nice to find a Chinese deli & bakery in a town where it’s mostly Japanese and Korean food. Now, I love Japanese and Korean food, but sometimes I’m just craving some dim sum, and I don’t want to drive all the way to San Gabriel Valley. This is the place to be! There’s a lot of dim sum varieties, and barbecued meats. I bought a dozen of steamed BBQ pork buns for ~$ 15, and it was pretty good! I shared with my coworkers, and they all enjoyed it as well.
I will have to come back and try more items. The Peking duck steamed bun sounded amazing, so I’ll have to get it next time.

Great place to grab a quick bite to eat. Try the sweet steamed buns with sweet pork.

I’ve gone here several times since they’re the only Dim Sum take out in Torrance and Rancho Palos Verdes area that I know of. HK’s Shu Mai and Har Gow are tiny, little itty bitty baby sizes. I’m used to Nor Cal San Jose Tai Pan Dim Sum; two and half of HK Bakery Shu Mai equals one Taipan. Gotta find a better source for Dim Sum in the South Bay.

I’ve been coming to Hong Kong Bakery for a really long time now, and every year for New Years, my family gets their cha shu, some dim sum, and cha shu baos. I really enjoy the cha shu best when it’s hot, and freshly cut. I know that there are probably better places around, but this spot is basically a childhood restaurant for me, so it’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

Come here every New Year’s eve to get the char sui (BBQ Pork) for New Year’s day feast. Be sure to call at least a week ahead of time otherwise you’ll end up standing in a long long line! Call ins have no wait and pick up their order in the call ahead pick up line.
The char sui is a hit or miss here. Sometimes it’s fairly lean and not very fatty. Other times you get a lot of fat. This year lots of fat.

Think italian deli but instead of sliced meats, they’re serving hawaiian asian inspired products.
The go to place for chashu bao, manaupa, sho pow, all the same thing depending on what flavor language u speak. They also have a baked version which I don’t care for, Other fillings such as bean duck hotdog…
Roast duck, oh yeah. Wonderfully brown crispy skin, the meats never raw, very reasonably priced. Once the little container of orange sauce popped open so it sorta marinated until I opened it up to eat it, which made it taste even better.
They have a pretty good variety including fried rice, chow mein, shumai, hargow, pastries, cookies, chashu, roast chicken, spam musubi… The chow mein I liked the old way they used to make it with the regular noodles instead of the hong kong style thin noodles they now use.
I’ve been coming here for years and never got sick from bad food. They get pretty crowded during times people are having get togethers so plan to wait in line during those times.

Best steamed and baked pork buns in the Southbay. I never walk away with less than a dozen. Great to take to parties, picnics, pot lucks, or as something to snack on in your car on a long road trip.
They also have tasty spam musubi, bbq pork, roasted pork (crispy skin!!!) and roasted duck.

Pork Buns look and taste amazing. My dad said, they taste like they did 25 yrs ago.” The place is clean and staff friendly.

All I really get here are their delicious char sui bows! Omg so good. The steamed buns are a little dough ball of bbq pork. This place is right across from the hospital. I crave these steamed buns. They have other buns with meat inside, but I have to try them. I probably won’t because I think some have mushrooms or celery, but I really don’t need to just because the pork ones are so good.

Again I almost have to eat there before I drive to work in Santa Monica bar Pintxos. Manapua pork hash and rice cake! Good thing I skate board everyday to work on the beach !!!

Love this place. Period. 5 stars, no question.

What a Tramendous place. The Kind food for very little $ I drive in from Corona, and it’s worth the hour commute.

I heard about this place that reportedly has better dumplings compared to Sea Empress in Gardena, as well as duck baos. However, what I didn’t realize is the owners are from Hawaii, and they serve plate lunches, malasadas & shave ice. Additionally, I saw a haupia cake. Hong Kong Bakery and Deli is on Vermont across from Harbor-​UCLA Medical Center, just south of Carson Street.
I ordered two duck manapuas, or baos ($ 1.50 each), 3 shu mai (75 cents each), and 3 har gow (75 cents each). In addition, I brought back to the office a malasada ($ 1.25), coconut pie ($ 1.50) and an almond cookie ($ 1.75). First of all, the manapua were excellent. It is hard to find ones filled with duck, and this version had a lot of meat: 5 Stars. On the other hand, the dumplings were on the skinny side. I think they tasted better than Sea Empress, but the dumplings did not have as much filling: 3 Stars.
Secondarily, the desserts were very good. I tried the malasada first, and it was better than Dough Dough’s in HB (and I previously said DD’s had the best ones on the mainland). However, nothing compares to Leonard’s on O’ahu and Tex’s on the Big Island: 4 Stars. Next I tried the coconut pie, and it was also very good. The dessert was moist, the dough flaky, and bursting w/​coconut flavor: 4 Stars. Lastly, unfortunately the almond cookie was a tad dry. Nonetheless, the taste was good. Idk the recipe, but maybe the wrong kind of shortening was used: 3 Stars.
Regarding the ambiance, it is like a coffee shop. There is a very thin aisle to walk and look at the bakery case. On the left side is where you order, and on the right side is the drinks and shave ice machine: 4 Stars. The service was OK. My server was friendly, but she didn’t give me any chopsticks, shoyu or hot sauce: 3 Stars.
I am definitely coming back here to try their plate lunches and bring back some malasadas for the office. This place is a winner in my mind, and especially because I met a cute nurse from Harbor-​UCLA while I was there. What a bonus! LMAO!!!

Best pork steamed pork buns ever! I’ve travelled far and wide for steamed buns, which include Valley Blvd as well as Chinatown… but these are by far the best. The dough is perfectly moist, with a slight hint of sweetness. The filling is not too saucy or too sweet… just right and not skimpy on the pork. I’m really wanting to try their BBQ pork that they sell by the pound.
Almond cookie (the big one): Meh… dry and really crumbly. Def wasn’t the best almond cookie.
Katsu chicken mini meal: very filling even though it’s «mini». It comes with steamed rice and macaroni salad. Chicken was fresh out of the fryer… very tasty. Didn’t care for the macaroni salad… tastes like they use Miracle Whip, which I despise.
Customer service: Meh. They take your order… that’s about it. Don’t expect anything else, like a smile or «thank you». Also, there is a $ 10 minimum for credit cards.

Overview: Hong Kong Bakery and Deli is a small (seating for less than 10) Asian bakery on Vermont and Carson in Torrance that sells both savory and sweet baked goods at reasonable prices ($ 1.25 for a baked pork bun, $ 1.20 for most other savory buns, and $ 3 – 4 for sweet baked goods as of June, 2015). Minimum $ 10 orders for credit cards and they do NOT accept American Express.
The Establishment: A few small tables at one half of the bakery gives singles and couples places to sit down and sample their treats before they go home :-). No waiter service, but also no expectation to tip.
The Food: I tried the steamed ground meat bun (Gai Bao), a steamed BBQ pork bun (Cha Siu Bao), and a baked BBQ pork bun (Baked C.S. Bao) and loved all three (see photos below). While my steamed pork bun was lacking in filling, the other two were nicely filled. The BBQ buns were slightly sweet (as they should be), were so soft/​tender and had an excellent flavor profile. All three fillings were very flavorful, and the delicious white bun itself is wonderfully airy, light, and tasty. Bottled drinks are overpriced but fountain drinks are also available. As a 145lb Asian male, 3 buns were enough to fill me up, costing me $ 4 including tax.
The Service: While they’re not your typical friendly, loquacious hosts, the people behind the counter are quick and efficient and because all food is pre-​made, you can get in and out in seconds if you’re fast enough.
Conclusions: Hong Kong Bakery and Deli is a small, order and sit down Asian bakery next to the Harbor-​UCLA Medical center that serves authentic and tasty sweet and savory baked goods at affordable prices. I would not bring large groups here, but I would recommend buying food for your office here because this type of food keeps well during transit.

Currently in town with the boyfriend and was craving some dim sum. I looked for a place that served it and found a nice restaurant that I wanted to try. Being that it was a warm day I wanted to be in doors ASAP and didn’t realize that I had walked into the wrong building. (the actual restaurant was across the way) but I thought hey its just dim sum and i’m already here and was greeted already it would be rude to just walk out. Being that there weren’t that many choices in dim sum I decided to just get a dozen Sui mai to eat and I we can grab something else later on in the day. The staff there is made me feel like i was being rushed to order to i just decided quickly and they packed my food togo. We sat down to eat and in all honesty it wasn’t that good. The outside of the sui mai were dry and over cooked where the meat tasted flavorless.
I did notice the bakery items that they had and I did want to try them but after eating the sui mai i lost my appetite and decided to have my dessert else where.

I’m out of state and was here visiting family. My family lives less than a 5 minute drive away from this place. My aunty wanted to get me a few snacks before my drive to San Diego and had said they sell dim sum. I was thinking they sold ONLY dim sum. So, I was really caught by surprise when I walked in and saw other food items available. Really liked how this place has a wide variety of food. If my trip was a bit longer, I would have liked to come back and tried those other delicious-​looking pastries and baked goods.
The items I did get to try were their char siu bao, shrimp har gow, and pork shumai. All were good, but I’ve had better. The char siu bao just had too much bun and not enough char siu. It’s the same with the shrimp har gow, too much wrapping but not enough shrimp. Their prices cannot be beat though. This place is great if you’re in the mood for dim sum, but not in the mood to sit in. Perfect place to just grab and go some of your favorite dim sum dishes.

I used to make my own Char Siu and realize it is actually less time consuming, tastier, and cheaper if I just go to Hong Kong Bakery. It’s like 9.99 a pound, can’t beat that!
I also like their Coconut Bun, definitely reminds me of San Francisco and all the convenient dim sum places you can just drop in and pick up.
I can’t say I like their dim sum that much, but I usually don’t get dim sum here so don’t judge this Unilocal review on the that.
Roast Duck is also very good, cheap as well.

I’m so glad I tried Hong Kong Bakery! Now I don’t have to drive all the way to Chinatown to get a reasonably priced roast duck! I’m ashamed to say that I have actually ordered duck from Asia Kitchen more than once because it was a convenient option, but never again! No more bony, burnt tasting, fried-​in-​dirty-​oil duck for me!
We ordered:
Roast duck, whole: 4.5 stars. The duck here is really delicious. Fatty, with perfectly glazed skin and it was very plump and meaty. A whole duck was about $ 20 including tax, so worth it and much cheaper than a sit-​down Chinese restaurant.
BBQ Pork: 3 Stars. A little on the dry side.
Baked Char Siu Bao: 5 stars! The buns here are soft and perfectly fluffy. Just think, a light doughnut with sweet grilled pork inside.
Spam Misubi: 3.5 stars. Misubi is kind of hard to mess up, but my bf loves them here. I thought they were decent.
Fried Mochi BBQ Pork and Mushroom: 2 stars. I would not get this again. Very greasy, and not enough filling. It was just a sticky, greasy, rice paste… ball…with a tiny bit of pork inside. Not a fan.
I will definitely be coming back. The prices are reasonable and the food is delicious, a little piece of Chinatown in the south bay.
