History

Established in 1992.

South Bay Community Church was founded by our senior pastor, Gary Shiohama and 15 brave souls on September 20, 1992. For six years we met in a community center, and were dubbed «the church in a truck» because all of our belongings (stage, sound equipment, carpet, coffee pot, cribs and more…) were stashed in a truck. Every Sunday our road crew unloaded and loaded the truck so that we could hold services. The purpose of our ministry in those days was to establish a culturally relevant church that would help people who are far from God, find and follow Christ. That remains our mission even to this day. In the fall of 1998, we leased space from Public Storage and we moved to 1459 W. 190th Street. It was a daring move made by approximately 50 courageous and faithful adults and 15 children. Since then, we have grown to a congregation of about 500 adults and nearly 200 children and youth. God has blessed us indeed, and we’re looking forward to what He has in store for us in the future!
