Grand Master Yee is really good with the kids and very caring. He has two Masters that teach the classes and they both are terrific, Master Park and Master Kim. Our first week at the school I noticed a change in my son, he was more respectful and mindful of how he acted towards others. Grand Master Yee’s philosophy and rules for the children to live by are posted and both Master Kim and Master Park are always encouraging and reminding the children of those rules. I really like rule number 7… children shall fix the receipe for straight A’s daily. I am extremely happy with the choice I made to send my son to Grand Master Yee’s Tae Kwon Do class to train! Did I mention how much I like both Master Kim and Master Park!!! Melanie Sears

After training at UC Berkeley until my Red Belt, I wanted to continue my Tae Kwon Do training since I was thisclose to my Black Belt. Also, it would be a great way to continue working out. After doing some extensive online research, I chose Young Yee Martial Arts. Why did I choose this school? For a couple of reasons: 1. I thought it would be a great opportunity to train under a 9th degree Grand Master. 2. It’s fairly close to my apartment, about a 15 minute drive. 3. It had a nice website and a great review written about it. 4. Grand Master Young Yee gave me a discount! Compared to my training at UC Berkeley, the training here is a lot less vigorous. The concentration is not on sparring but rather on form, technique, and philosophy. Also, it’s a totally different atmosphere since most of the students are little kids rather than college students. It took a lot of getting use to but it’s a great experience. The main downside of this school is that it lacks participation in competitions. After injuring my ankle last year, I decided that I would rather teach students than compete for my own personal health so it doesn’t bother me. Also, with so many students, it’s hard to separate the belt ranks so a lot of the training is general. This means that the higher belts do not have a lot of time to work on advanced techniques as they have to do basic techniques with the lower belts. Also, the testing fees may be a bit pricey compared to those at UC Berkeley but I hear that it is pretty average among private martial arts schools. The main upside is that Grand Master Young Yee is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience under his belt. He knows how to work with children and has a great sense of humor. Also, despite his age, he is a very mobile. I might be a bit biased because I am now a black belt and a part-time instructor at this school. However, I believe that this is a great place to learn Tae Kwon Do, especially for someone who may not want to enter competitions so soon. I don’t know how long I will continue to help Grand Master Young Yee teach but as long as I’m there you should all check it out!
