I have never had a bad experience here, and I’ve been here many times. The reviews I’ve read about people’s bad experiences sound very different from the way I know Joey’s; a very humble spot with remarkable food run by a kind married couple. This place is fantastic and it sucks that people are having bad times here because it’s something I look forward to every time I have the opportunity to go. I recommend it 100% and I would miss it if it were gone.

The food is amazing but the service is horrible. I ask for large orders for a corporation and I get attitudes from the son over the phone or the father. They barely deliver, you must beg and they also act like their green sauce is a pair or rare Jordan’s that the restaurant would shut down if they were to give you extra. I can’t believe they are so stingy with the sauce. They lie and say they are all out sometimes. I have spent so much money at joeys and will never order again. I rather order from el pollo gordo in Paterson rather than go back to joeys again.

I’m Peruvian, my family is from Lima, I usually go to La Tia in Paterson. however, I went to this place a few times and liked it. I even ordered a huge amount for family who was visiting once. I get home and order from them and as I’m about to give them my card information, the owner grabbed the phone and and told me they never delivered to my town, then hung up on me. I called back to explain to him that I was simply trying to bring him business and I’ve ordered from them before multiple times. He then started yelling at me. No explanation should be given as to why this horrible service should never be provided to anyone.

Worst customer service. The person who answers the phone is very nasty, poor manners. I do not know how they are still in business.

I had walked in the afternoon to pick up food. I had called around 130 and was there by 2 and the food was still not ready. I waited till 245ish to get my food. The owner suggested two soda for the price of 150 each. I bought the two sodas. He then gave me a total of $ 45 dollars when we had originally said it was $ 35. I had asked him why the additional 10 dollar charge. He explained the menu I had was from a week ago. His new menu which he showed me had the prices which they did but they were written in pen. I had advised him this was false advertisement he said he never rang me up for $ 35. My girlfriend was craving so I had no choice. Before leaving I realized two sodas were not going to be enough I asked him to take back his two sodas and asked him for the 2 liter which was only $ 2.75. He had pushed and hustled me for two 20oz sodas at a total of $ 3 when I could of bought a 2L for $ 2.75. After realizing I was getting hustled I tried the food at home. The rice tasted like it came out the freezer and was heated in the microwave. The green sauce tasted like a water down version of mayonnaise. The chicken had no flavor and was undercooked. I give this a 1⁄5 stars for false advertising, incorrect menus, incorrect prices, horrible food, and the owner trying to sell me two 20oz sodas for $ 3 when the 2L is $ 2.75. The way the food looks and taste I do not know how it pass it’s food inspections.

Joeys is a decent Peruvian restaurant on union. Not huge inside so don’t plan to eat here. There food is decent but don’t think it’s the best. I know co workers who order from here and delivery is quick however, I’ve been there in person and it took over a half hour for food, for two.

I don’t understand what all the negative reviews are about. Yeah it’s a small place, yeah they only have two tables, what do you want from them a bag filled with rubies diamonds and emeralds? I stopped in and picked up their ceviche, one of those rockin sandwiches, or that delicious chicken with green sauce anywhere from to 1−2x a wk consistently for the 4 years that I went to school up there. I never had a bad experience once. I found the owner or I guess the owners son/co owner to be really friendly and passionate about the food. The only thing stopping me from still being a regular is the fact I live just over an hour away now. But if I’m up there for anything better believe I’ll make time to stop there.

I don’t care how good the food at any place is if they show possibly biased and racist treatment based on ethnicity and age, as it seemed to be the case when we tried to dine in. Based on the Unilocal reviews we decided to try out this place, a hole-in-the-wall with two tables indoors and outdoor benches(no tables). When we went in both tables were filled. We were the only ones waiting for our food. One of the tables got up and left. My husband went to sit at the table and was told that he «can’t sit there» because there is another group of people coming in and they need the table. Again, this isn’t a formal restaurant — a hole in the wall that had first-come first-served seating when we first came in, but apparently became«reservations only» when we wanted a seat. There wasn’t any«no reservations» sign on the table. There is no host, no wait staff. If you saw the place and I told you one needed reservations to eat there, you’d laugh, that’s how far from a formal restaurant this place is. While we were standing around an empty table, another duo came in, also English-speaking. They were also told they could not sit inside and needed to sit outside on the bench in forty-degree weather. In the meantime, a nice, Spanish-speaking lady came in with her daughter and older mother. By then, the other table had cleared. The owner, instead of allowing us to sit at the other table(we are still standing, waiting for the food), told the lady she could have that table. That lady was nice enough to advocate on my behalf as I had told her our conversation with the owner(even she couldn’t seem to make heads and ends of what happened), and through her the owner conceded that we could sit and eat at the original table until that party arrives. By the way, I was sure she didn’t have ‘reservation’ because when she first came in, she asked me why I was standing instead of sitting at an empty table since she wanted a place for her mother to sit, and I told her about the mystifying instructions of the owner. So my husband and I are eating and a group of three Hispanic men came in. No one came to the table to tell us that this is the group of individuals that the owner was talking about. Apparently they decided that they didn’t want to wait for us to clear out(again, we didn’t even know they were waiting) and left. After they left the owner had the gall to look at us over the service counter and start blaming us for making him«lose business», and then went on to berate us for not clearing the table because the group of 3 were the ones that were supposed to sit at the table(again, NEVERTOLDUS!) and basically admonished us like we were his grandchildren. In public. In his own restaurant. While he was on the phone with another customer! So I got up, told him calmly but clearly that I did not appreciate him taking out his anger on us in public, that I did not appreciate biased treatment based on ethnicity, and that I am not coming back. My hubby, God bless him, kept his anger in check. We cleaned up after ourselves and left. If you have tolerated my narrative up to this point in hopes I will mention the food, I will: it was ok and overpriced. It took half an hour for them to cut up half a rotisserie chicken and a thin piece of beef with overdone eggs. For a combo family meal(see pics), you pay $ 19, a price they seemed to have discreetly increased from $ 17 based on the abundantly clear labeling. For that price, you get much better portions and quality, as well as equal treatment regardless whether or not you’re Hispanic, at Pollos Pucalor or any other Pervuian restaurants around Paterson. I feel badly for the rest of the staff, but if your front line/owner/manager shows such biased treatment and then actually BERATES customers for not complying with his preferential accommodations, I don’t think this place deserves anyone’s loyal patronage. I would think that equal treatment and basic politeness is a given at any restaurant. Apparently at Joey’s, that’s too much to ask.

I probably won’t come back — the food was alright. There’s definitely better Peruvian restaurants in the area. Plus the owner was really rude.

Pretty good food, fries are good, but if you let em sit under your pollo too long they get soggy. Salchi papa was really good, El pollo la brasa was good, over all solid food place.

Great food. 1) The food is amazing. They have Seco, lomo Saltado, and combo chicken and ribs. 2) The price is affordable. 3) The place is small. This is more of a take out then eat in. 4) I got this drink called Chicha Lemina. It was fantastic.

This was a sudden stop for us. It was late on a Sunday, and this bright beacon just beckoned. Ok, so that’s a little dramatic. We were driving around, got hungry, and this place just happened to be on our way. We ordered, sat down in this stark little place, and were amazed at the traffic the place had. The phone rang non-stop, and there was no end to the people coming in to pick up. Ok, so we stumbled upon the right place to eat. We ordered a small platter of ribs(because their famous chicken had run out — sadly). Harumph. Small? It was«small» enough to feed 3 people!!! Great food, generous portions, and fab prices. The staff is really nice and the place is spotless.

We order from here at my job. The food is amazing every time. Not one complaint. The chicken and rib combo is my absolute favorite! You can’t go wrong. The prices are decent and yes delivery takes a while. So order before you get hungry. But it’s worth the wait. There’s not much else to say. It’s just really good food.

i haven’t Unilocaled in quite a long time, partially in fear of retribution, partially because what I like has been changing, and partially out of sheer laziness. Joey’s was worth writing about. This hole-in-the-wall joint on Union Blvd. in Totowa is absolutely delicious. The bistec a lo pobre is delicious, although be ready to pick some fat off the steak. This dish has a little bit of a lot of things(steak, eggs, fries, rice, plantains, salad). I also tried some of the chicken which was so moist and full of flavor. Plan on picking up, as the inside is quite small, and takeout orders can take awhile(30 – 45 min) because they cook things when you order them.

First venture into Peruvian Cuisine so if I’m overly impressed or wowed by something that is standard than take my review with a bit of salt. I’ve ordered from Joey’s twice now. The first time I ordered I violated my own rules. I ordered a salad. From a place that advertises barbecue, peruvian cuisine, and a grill. For shame. The salad was great but how do you judge a restaurant based on its food, if you order a salad which I can make in my own kitchen(more often than not). So I ordered today: a Personal Size Order of BBQ Pork Ribs(3 Large Ribs about 6 – 8 Inches Long Each), a Side Order(Included) of Fried Casaba), a Side Order(Not Included) of Fried Sweet Plantanos, and a Strawberry Milk Slightly Sweetened Smoothie. The order was $ 16 in total to get delivery but the leftovers will be wonderful as well. I have not seen the storefront or store itself so I can’t guarantee how it is for sit in meals. The ribs were charred ever so slightly, had some-to-minimal fat on them, and was covered in a delicious but not overwhelming sauce. It wasn’t a traditional barbecue sauce, had some tang to it, but not too heavy. The fried casaba was crispy, but not too hard, it peeled apart, was dusted with salt, had a softer inside, and had great flavor. The fried casaba reminded me of steak fries in flavor but distinguished themselves with texture. The plantanos were slightly charred, packed a ton of flavor, were soft, and absolutely amazing. The smoothie was not too sweet, strawberry flavor, milk based, and was refreshing. All in all, I’m impressed. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I do want to try a sit down meal at some point but for now, I’m satisfied with my delivery. Update: The owner was wonderful to follow up as he had received information that his delivery driver was caught up in traffic. Luckily, my order had already arrived and I had began eating. However, very thoughtful. Check it out!
