Stumbled upon this gem when I arrived early for a meeting at a nearby office and was wandering the streets looking for a quick lunch. There are tons of options in this part of Townson, great bars, restaurants, every ethnic food you can think of. But, you know how it is when you’re by yourself, don’t really want to sit down, don’t want some huge meal, and then I noticed a tent. Yeah, The Flaming Pit is set up in a tent along the sidewalk on Pennsylvania Ave. I figured I’d give it a try, sometimes these places are the best. And in this case, it was really good. After taking my order the owner/operator stepped back to the rear of his tent where he had buffet style warming trays set up with burners keeping everything warm. In addition to pit beef, they have BBQ, sausage, and maybe one more sandwich. They have a few salads, chips, soda, and water. Besides condiments, that’s really it. The sandwich came out on a nice bun with a ton of meat. The meat was pretty well done, my fault for not specifying rare. They had a number of condiments available but I stuck with onions and horseradish. The sandwich was tender, not a bite of gristle, with a great flavor. Obviously they’re cooking it somewhere nearby and bringing it to their tent. They have one table on the sidewalk which was perfect for me to quaff down my sandwich. I asked how long he had been operating here and he said since April. I teased that they would need heaters in a few months and he said they haven’t decided what to do for the winter yet. Well, I hope they keep on keeping on because I will be back to Towson just for one of these sandwiches!
