Amazing pie! First time I have been here! I got the cadillac slice and it was amazing! Hubby got pecan and he said it was tasty as well! The only reason I would maybe give a four is bc it’s expensive! But you get what you pay for sure!

When invited over for dinner last minute, this is the place to go for offering to bring a dessert, or for any occasion for pie,. Was taken care of by Katie today, she took good care of me getting me a french silk pie from the back and putting on fresh whipped cream and chocolate drizzle on top. I never had a bad pie from here. I asked about the Calder’s ice cream they now carry, for $ 7.99 for 1.5 quart, she said it is very good, so I will be back to try some. They also sell Calder’s milk as well. Their pies are ultra premium.
Also, the french silk pie is silky smooth and buttery, so good.

This place has everything a pie should. The pies are quite pricey, at nearly $ 20. But, you get what you pay for.

As a pie maker myself, (and a pretty good one, I am told), I will only buy a pie from Achatz. The ingredients are exceptional. We recently had the double crusted blueberry for my husband’s birthday. It s amazing. Excellent crust, fresh berries, and the key… Not too sweet. For those who say the pie is expensive, I would counter that a good pie is actually quite expensive to make. Filled with fresh ingredients, not canned gelatinous goo, makes a difference you have to pay for. My favorite… The strawberry rhubarb… Yummmmmmy. Go get one!

(Michigan Three Berry + Some Cherries Pie?)

These are delicious but expensive pies. I like the apple, pecan and french silk pies. The apple is soft and flaky with a nice sweetness to the apples. The pecan is very, very sugary but is delicious in small portions. The french silk is pretty much the best pie ever (minor exaggeration but I love it)! I didn’t care as much for the four berry pie. I found it to be too tart.
We were reassured on multiple visits that all pies are freshly baked without preservatives and are «safe» for vegetarians. The staff is generally friendly and helpful and on occasion we have tried samples. If you can’t make it to the store I have seen these pies in other grocery stores (think it was Kroger). Don’t discount (no pun intended) that the pies are expensive (about $ 15). You can discount (pun intended) that cost by a few dollars at any Achatz location on either customer appreciation days or sometimes with a coupon from the newspaper.

Their pies are quickly growing on me. We picked up our first one at Kroger’s, and it was the Double Crust Apple. Really light and flaky, and though the pie looked dense, it was quite the opposite. However, what we really like about their pies is that they don’t use artificial sweeteners or preservatives. Every ingredient!
We wanted to try their Dutch Apple, since it had a crumb topping, and though they didn’t have the whole pie available during our visit, we grabbed a slice. Peeping into the refrigerated display case, we saw a Coconut Cream slice, so as coconut lovers, we HAD to grab that too. Surprisingly, the coconut cream was better than the Dutch Apple. The crumb topping to the Dutch Apple wasn’t all that «crumbly» (for lack of better words), and the flavor didn’t compliment the filling all that seamlessly. Don’t get me wrong, it was still tasty, but we definitely prefer the Double crust version. Each slice was $ 3.49, and perfect for sampling. The young lady behind the counter was lovely, though we didn’t get any free pie samples that people have talked about.
Oh, and another note: July 26 is Customer Appreciation Day, where all dessert pies are $ 12. Orders can be placed online, in-​store, or by phone. Considering that each pie is normally $ 16-​$ 17, it’s a good deal.

We heard that the pie was worth the trip when we were in town for a hockey tournament. But no food is worth being treated as poorly as we were by the girl behind the counter. She refused to cut into a pie to give a slice to my husband. I had to ask for utensils to eat the pre-​sliced pie we did purchase. And when I asked for enough forks (she only gave 2 forks for 3 slices), she literally tossed the third fork at me!

I only have two complaints about this place that probably can’t be helped: 1) closes at sundown (but since it is due to religious reasons it’s not a validated complaint) 2) a little pricey (however since everything is handmade, i do see that you get what you pay for). My most favorite pie to order from here is the Banana Cream pie. I love watching the staff slice fresh, ripe bananas onto a delicious bed of cream on the homemade pie crust and then topping the whole thing off with a mound of fresh whipped cream. It does not get any better than that! And you can’t go wrong with all the free pie samples they give out daily.

Delicious pies! I like their signature berry, but the cream varieties are awesome as well.

The seasonal strawberry silk pie is the truth! I will concur with others that have qualms about the crust, as it was kind of rubbery. As a kid, I would scarf the pie part and make my mom eat the crust. That would not be a bad strategy to employ here.
I ended up here after reading reviews of the Grand Traverse Pie Co (maybe I will check that place out, too). Do one thing and do it well; pies are not a bad thing to do. I was expecting a restaurant, but it is literally a bakery, display counter, and a few seats.
They have savoury stuff, too, but it is all frozen. I was hoping for some fresh pot pie, but that is not how Achatz rolls. The person at the counter told me I could call in advance next time, if I wanted a warm lunch. I may take her up on that. The chocolate cream pie was really tasty, too.

The clank of cowbell hurries me in to the vortex parking lot off Long Lake whenever I drive by. That means within a 3 mile radius. I find myself twisting and turning through crazy Michigan lefts until I find myself within line of sight of that pretty cursive sign that little kids can’t read anymore. The vague efforts of resistance are mustered from the part of me which tracks the food I eat, worries about weight, and considers a healthy lifestyle to be the best investment I can make. The beast mind squashes that pathetic stream of higher-​level consciousness without effort, setting me on a clear course to satiate nature’s basest desires. I have been primed by years of existence to hunt down buttery crusts and rip out the melting, gooey pie innards with my bare teeth and claws.
I’ve been caught on camera by National Geographic and Unilocal!naturalists with the blood of wildberries staining my chin and rhubarb viscera under my manicured nails. And I don’t care, thrilled by the hunt.
Achatz pies in the wild are a good substitute. They are an expensive victim, requiring extra financial effort. A slice at $ 3 – 5 takes more out of me than the standard supermarket tin or, you know, baking prey myself. Pies prepared on site lend an appealing aroma to the air, awakening the visceral instincts that urge me to rend, to chomp, and to kill (pies).
Hand-​made dough for their crusts has been inconsistent on my three vacations. The double crust has been tough and chewy like an older, sinewy beast. Another was tender and flaky as a teenage Bieber fan. The third didn’t have much taste; I must have eaten the chicken equivalent. Fluffier and flakier is better if I am throwing all caution for my hips to the wind, and noshing on the captive pie slice chosen among multiple options. There are entire herds of fruit-​based pies, savory pies, and cream specialties that are the product of bovine raptures.
My favourite is the Michigan four-​berry, but then, I salivate at the opportunity to bash through fruit-​laden bushes and gorge myself to my heart’s content. The sweetness factor is way up there when I prefer a better balance towards tartness. The apple left more to be desired. Underspiced and a bit bland, though definitely warm, the fruit slices swam in the golden gel that smelled suspiciously syrupy. Mmmmrfff. Not suitable for THIS pie huntress. The other savory I tried at a birthday party was unmemorable enough I nibbled around the crust, ignored the filling, and stalked off to decimate an innocent fruit tray lurking on the patio like we mighty lionesses would ignore it.
There was carnage, I assure you, as there is with the four-​berry. If you like sweet, then you’ll probably find yourself satisfied here.

It’s better than like Kroger pie but you could buy that rolled pie crust in they sell by milk and dump in a can of pie filling and get roughly the same result for about $ 10 cheaper. So I guess what I’m saying is that if you’re rich and lazy, this is totally the way to go.

Achatz Pie is just so good! Every flavor I’ve ever had is fresh, delicious and tasty. Everytime I’ve gone to any of their locations they have a great selection of pies, and a great selection of samples to try new pies as well. And I love that you can get a lot of the pies with different crust, such as crumb and double crust (my personal favorite!)
They have a fantastic selection of pies by the slice as well.
And perhaps one of the greatest discoveries I’ve had at Achatz is their savory food they offer. I buy some of their frozen things to keep on hand in the freezer in case I don’t feel like cooking but still want a nice decent meal. They have awesome chicken noodle soup that definitely tastes like homemade and not from boullion, and the noodles inside are HANDMADE and totally make the soup. The large chunks of white meat, and various vegetables just show the quality of this soup.
The pot pies are awesome as well. Same as the soup, you can just tell it’s handmade with quality ingredients, and you can taste it.

Awesome customer service. We walked in two minutes before they were closing (oops, us, for not checking the hours, but we just walked down after eating at Wellington Pub (
) and the girl behind the counter still welcomed us warmly, told us about their specials, and then nicely told us that she was closing in two minutes! We picked four pieces of pie (the special was Buy 3 Get 1 Free) which was difficult because they all sounded and looked good. We got Coconut Crème, Pecan, Strawberry Rhubarb, and Apple Crumb. And they were ALL delish. DELISH I TELL YOU! Like my mom would make and I can only dream of making. My only regret is waiting until now… two months before we move… to get here for the first time. Don’t make the same mistake. Trust me.

I come from a small community that has a heavy Amish population and let me tell you, the Amish know how to make a pie. I am so excited because, I have found a local substitute in Achatz Pies!
First, their crust is flaky and not overly sweet, which is key. Second, I respect a place that places value on a traditional apple pie, most establishments stick to the dutch apple. Though tasty, sometimes it can be overly sweet and a double-​crust apple is more subtle. Finally, on Fridays you can «build your own pie» by picking 7 different slices of pie, which is a great opportunity to try something different.
Achatz is close to my home in Troy, so it is also super convenient. For those of you living farther away you can also purchase whole Achatz pies at PaPa Joes in Rochester (near their dessert cases).

Holy berry pie! I hate berry pies but this place has sold me on it with their Michigan four berry pie. I’m not from Michigan so it’s a little weary and heavy on my heart to be living here especially when I get molested by road raging drivers almost every day. The Michigan four berry pie is the first Michigan thing that I really truly enjoy.
I was skeptical at first but when I tasted that filling which was just tart enough and not too intense or heavy with the perfect ratio of pie crust and the chewy/​jammy dodger like crust end which I usually throw away) it was like tasting magic. Apparently they have good Mushroom? soup (won some 2010 detroit award) but I’m not interested in heating things up from the freezer.
The pie by slice is pretty cheap (under $ 3) and it be delicious. I’ve also tried the apple and the french silk and they’re also good but surprisingly I love the Michigan infused thing the most.
Now if only I could get on the road without feeling like I’m in a Nascar race or going to get my windshield cracked by a raging baseball bat wielder.

Every now and then (generally about 7 days before my period) I throw my usual dietary principles to the wind and succumb to my overwhelming desire for piiiiiiiiiiie. The slice of double crust apple pie from Achatz was perfection… rich, thick, butter, crust; sweet, tart apple filling with a hint of cinnamon. Everything I want in apple pie.
FYI I actually purchased the aforementioned pie slice at Whole Foods in Chicago (Gold Coast location.) They were sampling other pies as well so I of course also tried the Michigan 4-​berry, which had a sweet crumble topping that offset the very tart berry filling beautifully.
(Ok, so maybe I actually circled back and also got an additional apple pie sample as well…)

Achatz Homemade Pies is a gem of the Detroit area. They are the best pies I’ve ever had. I usually come to buy a whole pie twice a year, for thanksgiving and for my birthday (I don’t really like cake). And I always get the Michigan 4-​berry pie. I’ve tried other varieties but always wind up back at their signature pie. The berries (blueberry, blackberry, cherry, and raspberry) are fresh and tart and countered by sweet, buttery, and crumbly topping. Its quite possibly the best dessert I’ve eaten.
Achatz’s other pies are tasty and inventive. They also have old favorites like apple, cherry, pecan, lemon, chocolate and many more. The pies look so good, I almost don’t want to eat them. If you’re ordering for yourself or just a few people, you can buy slices in nearly all the varieties of pie they sell.
Some tips for buying: go early as they often run out of pies later in the day, especially popular ones like the Michigan 4-​berry. I would order a pie in advance if you plan on picking one up around a holiday as they usually run out of pies before holidays.
Extra special tip: If you go to the store near closing time, an employee will usually offer a «special deal for the day» to get one slice free with the purchase of 3 slices.

These pies are delicious… and I’m not even the biggest fan of pie (cake 4 life!). I love how the crusts are flaky and not overly salty (I hate pies with really salty crusts) and how the fillings are fresh and tasty.
Achatz’s most famous pie is the Michigan four berry. The textures and flavors of the berries are great, although I do find the pie to be quite sweet overall. But that’s okay, I just pour myself a really tall glass of milk.
Another pie I keep getting is the pumpkin praline. It’s got a layer of cheesecake, a pumpkin layer, and pralines on top, all in a flaky pie crust. Amazing.
The pecan pie is also delicious. Too many pecan pies consist of wayyyy too much gooey pecan pie filling with a scant number of pecans — often chopped up until starting to resemble sawdust — chucked on top. Those über-​gooey pies make me feel like I am eating a pie full of snot, or Nickolodeon Gak. In short, not appetizing. This pie, however, is perfect. It’s got a ton of pecans on top and just the right amount of pecan pie filling.
I haven’t bought a whole cream pie, as I tend to get overwhelmed, but I sometimes buy slices of the banana split pie. Mmmmm.
In addition to selling whole pies and slices, Achatz also has cookies, other pastries, and pot pies. I’ve never bought anything other than pie, but I tasted some food at an event they had at the store and remember liking it.
There are multiple locations in metro Detroit. Note: all of the stores are closed on Saturdays. I believe I’ve seen Achatz pies at Whole Foods too, though, if you absolutely need a pie on a Saturday.
I would recommend subscribing to the email newsletters or «liking» them on Facebook as they sometimes have specials.
