Petra

We had dinner here and it was delicious! I don’t get the negative ratings at all. I travel frequently for work, so I have perspective. The ambience was nice-​chic and urban but with an alpine vibe. The service was good-​laid back, which is fine as we were not in a hurry. We tend to like average sized portions, so we thought the portions were appropriate and well priced. I would not consider this an expensive restaurant, but it is not low priced, either. We got the Short Ribs and chicken entrees. I went for the truffle ravioli appetizer as my entrée. All were very good. In particular, the Brussels sprouts slaw that accompanied the Short Ribs was out of this world. My teenaged son devoured it. All in all, a very good dining experience.

Service: The two waitresses were not happy to be there. No smiles at all. At one point we asked for some butter and we even got an eye roll. Towards the end when she handed us the bill there was a smile with «thanks for coming in guys» comment.
Food: Ok. Nothing great. Ordered the cumin lamb meatball. Three measly meatballs for $ 13. The patatas bravas is supposed to be a Spanish potato tapas. But we got French fries! Cheese plate was so small. Two small cubes of cheese, three small piece of salami, three olives, three small cornichon for $ 17! Mind you these are supposed to be «Share plates».
Ambiance: Nice and cozy.

Horrible! Service was awful and staff was rude. We waited for 45 minutes for 4 children’s plates, and the place was dead. It was probably because it was 7 pm and they were closing that they treated us horribly. I personally went behind the bar to get new glasses for my wine, and she was upset that I served myself — I told her that we’re a party of 4 adults and would like to drink our wine.
The food was ok but not worth it if I’m being treated like that. I spoke and called to management and they were astonished that service was terrible for a party of 8. We’re here on vacation and all of north star is a nice place. All of the other restaurants treated us nicely. I will never come here again nor refer anyone to this place

Don’t even bother unless your coming specifically for the wine, and you don’t mind selling your soul for it. North Star prices without the service. In fact, the service is horrendous and the food is pitiful. Definitely will not repeat. Not even if this was the only wine bar in town, which it is not!

Wine flights for $ 14… Any wine on the menu… Nice atmosphere… Live music… The foods are delicious, tapas style plates that you share… Only issue for me was the price for the small quantity of food… The food was really tasty, but to me, over priced… But, Truckee is a resort town, so alas, no bargains… All in all a great experience… Would def come again, for a nice, light evening… But, don’t go here if you are starving and on a budget…

The ambiance was very serious and it didn’t have a comforting and welcoming feeling. I do not recommend going here for dinner, if you’re very hungry, or if you have children. The portions are small and it cost $ 20 for a appetizer portion of prawns that was apparently an entrée.
When we were seated, the server was telling us the specials and got interrupted by another customer and told us to «hold on» in a very sassy voice. When she continued she acted like it was our fault that she was interrupted. From then on it was awkward and weird. She tried to make up for her bad attitude by checking in on us once we got or food but it was too late.
From what I remember, there were only 3 choices for the entrees — all meat or seafood, so no vegetarian options for entrees. Once we decided what we wanted to order the server decided to tell us that they were out of the chicken. When we told her that’s what we were going to order she was offended and was somewhat rude to my dad.
My cousin, dad and I got a tomato basil soup and a grilled cheese. We all agreed that it was fresh, but the soup was flavorless and plain. The grilled cheese was good but it was like any other grilled cheese and again, lacked flavor. As for the prawns that I mentioned, my friend said they were good but tiny. When it came out I thought it was an appetizer. For the future, I would not pay $ 20 for a small plate of prawns.
Overall, the service was horrible, the food was okay, and I can see why the place was empty when we came in.

Went in last night for dinner. Menu very limited and the were «out» of several things. Should really not show up under restaurants on Unilocal,really just a wine bar with a few offerings of lite fare. Expensive. Wines by glass very limited. Woman who waited on us was somewhat rude and abrupt, but did try to overcompensate with obsequious pleasantries as it was closer to paying the bill. Salads good, tomato soup and grilled cheese fresh but bland. Shrimp and polenta good but scant for the price. Good for a glass of wine and a snack.

Petra keeps getting better! Selection of wines keep evolving. It’s alway great to discover new wines. Don’t skip desert cheesecake; it is amazing.

Petra is a great spot for a group gathering or just stopping in for a delicious glass of wine for Happy Hour with a cheese plate. We were treated to a crisp and refreshing white sangria with fresh cut peaches and strawberries tonight. We also had light bites that paired well with the sangria. Can’t wait to go back!!!

Drove from Truckee to Petra last night for dinner as they had their hours showing open on Unilocal… but they weren’t open Monday night as listed. That get’s a low vote for wasting our time.

Petra is a charming little place at North Star that is named after the equally charming niece of the owner. Located just outside of «The Village» behind Starbucks, this wine-​and-​dine restaurant has totally won my heart.

–Tomato Soupa and Grilled Cheese ($ 13.00)
Ahhh, the most satisfying meal on a chilly day, especially because it’s like you’re getting two meals in one. I loved that the tomato soup had a plethora of fresh herbs and seasoning in it, which gave it a wonderful flavor. The Grilled Cheese sandwich was made with Sourdough bread and Fontina cheese, a much more appealing choice compared to White and American.
–Smoked Salmon Spread ($ 13.00)
Hmm, I have mixed feelings abut this. I did enjoy it, but I was hoping to have perhaps more of a fresh smoked salmon texture? The smoked salmon spread was supposedly mixed with capers and cream cheese, but I felt the texture of canned tuna rather than salmon. I know it must be salmon, but I would have preferred perhaps small diced pieces of smoked salmon so I could enjoy it to its fullest with the toasted ciabatta.

I LOVE that they had a tasting flight of any three wines. You may mix between reds and whites, but I stuck with all reds:
–Pinot Noir Bethal Heights 2012 — Eola-​Amity Hills, OR — $ 22/​glass
–Malbec Felino 2013 — Mendoza, Argentina — $ 11/​glass
–Cabernet Sauvignon Round Pond 2012 — Napa Valley, CA — $ 19/​glass
I love that you can sample even the most expensive wines for one flat price of $ 14.00. What deal. Surprisingly, my favorite of the three was the Malbec. It had such a great oak-​ey flavor that I could just see complimenting a steak too perfectly. In fact, I loved it so much that I bought a bottle for $ 30.00, a real steal considering it’s quality.

Ahhh the glorious happy hour. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to partake in this, as I was the designated driver and needed to be responsible in getting us home in one piece (and I just don’t trust anyone else with my car). Their happy hour special is from 4:00 — 5:00 PM and includes two glasses of wine and a cheese plate for $ 21.00. A perfect way to end a hard day on the slopes if you ask me!
The staff were all so friendly, attentive, and particularly personable. I wish I could be up here at North Star more often just to come back to Petra.

With the friendliest, most knowledgeable staff, there is no other wine bar in Tahoe that comes close.

Great food, good wine. Expensive but the quality is there. Wine selection is also good, but they do not have many well-​known ones.

Petra is lovely! Service, food and atmosphere is incredible. Sarah is the best!
A must try is their tomato soup and grilled cheese. I wish downtown’s Truckee’s wine bar would serve food just as yummy.

Just fantastic! We were looking for a low key, kid friendly spot and this place hit the mark perfectly. Delicious yet unpretentious, simple, yet extremely satisfying. The fig and goat cheese sandwich was my favorite, but the grilled cheese and tomato soup rocked. Everything about this place! Our server, I believe her name was Leaf? Awesome, sweet friendly, attentive. Great Pinot. Cheers!

Wow this spot has it all, great energy with the staff, I really loved the décor, music that you can hear but not talk over & best of all their wine selection was an awesome touch after hiking and biking all day. I replenished my energy with the Organic heirloom tomato salad. The tomatoes where amazing I could feel my tummy say yes please! Accompanied with goat cheese and pistachio vin I felt bad for the people that watched me eat it was gone so quick. Thanks for a great lunch/​dinner will be back soon!

Perhaps a good wine/​date location, definitely not a full dinner spot — which is what we were hoping for after a full day on the slopes.
So the basic idea of Petra is that it’s a wine bar with a very few tapas portion sized dishes.
The main difference from a regular tapas place is the selection — where at a tapas place you can try so many interesting creations, here — you can choose from a handful of bite sized dishes.
The only item with meat/​fish on the menu they had when we were there was an appetizer with a few slices of salami.
On the menu at the actual restaurant, there was no rib, no sea bass, no meatballs. I don’t know where they went — but the weren’t present for dinner, a little deceiving that those items were listed on the website’s menu…
Here’s a breakdown of what we tried:
«Warm Sonoma Chevre» — nice small chevre w/​garlic served with some bread. Not a bad choice.
Salami and Cheeses — basically — go to your local store and take salami out of a ziplock — thats about what you get
Spanakopita — a filo dough –type dish filled w/​a melted feta and vegetables — was OK, filo wasn’t super flakey, flavor was decent.
Housemade hummus — some decent hummus and pita — average grocery store quality again tho.
«Grilled Cheese and Soupa» (tomato soup w/​cheese and bread) — the soup was pretty bland for 3 people, and OK for the 4^th. So you have a 25% chance of a tasty soup apparently. Roll the dice at your own risk here.
«Creamy Feta Pasta» (Feta Penne) — the feta in this was pretty nice, but in the end — all the dish was was. melted feta, penne, and a few pieces of asparagus. If it weren’t for that little bit of feta flavor, I would have likened this to a microwave «alfredo» pasta.
«Roasted Winter Squash and Quinoa Pilaf» (butternut squash w/​pilaf) — the butternut squash was a nice option — not at too many places. This is the main ingredient of this dish where the taste comes from, and it tasted pretty decent.
Overall, the selection was poor and the dishes that were good were not standouts — the flavor (and portion size) did not make up for the price (even for ski resort pricing).

Petra has a rustic look which is pretty standard for wine bars and speakeasy types these days. Still, I love the giant hanging branch and the cozy looking couches (though I avoided them as to not have an impromptu, public cat nap).
The waitress/​bartender here was extremely friendly and fun to talk to. The food was quite delicious – definitely try the warm chevre and sweet potato fries. Lamb meatballs were just okay but I hate lamb anyway.
Petra has the most legit wine selection that I’ve seen so far. Plenty of CA wines as well as a handful of foreign. They have covet-​able stuff like Kosta Browne. And if you walk out with a bottle, it’s 30% off!
BTW one of my friends gave up snowboarding after less than an hour for the vino. The power of Petra. And wine. And alcoholics.

The other charcuterie stuff was not as impressive (wild boar sausage, salami, and smoked salmon).
Petra is under the same ownership as the «Uncorked» wine bars, but the Uncorked in downtown Truckee seems to be a bit less expensive.
They tend to close early in case of low foot traffic, so call before you drive up.

I remember this used to be Napa Valley something something? I do remember seeing when this opened but had not thought about stepping in for a while now. Recently we were having a slow day to hit the slopes so we decided to eat first before a half day. Got a number of things:
–Cheese plate
–Charcuterie plate
–Beef bourgingon
–Lamb cumin meatballs
–Gouda rice cakes
Things had decent flavor though some things seemed under seasoned. I think the rice cakes were my winner and strangely enough since we hadn’t ridden yet, we didnt try any wine. Maybe next time. Our server was pretty awesome and since there were only a few other people, we had personalized service. Well maybe wine next time. 3.75 stars
