Kino School is a progressive, student-​centered, experiential, K-​12 school. We encourage creative, inquisitive, thoughtful and independent thinkers; informed and involved citizens who respect others, work effectively, and treat others with compassion and commitment. Our students are lifelong learners who believe in themselves and make a difference in the world.

History

Established in 1975.

History of the School

Kino School opened at its present location on North First Avenue in 1976. It was originally founded and located at Ft. Lowell and First as Sacred Heart School.

The original founders believed in the intrinsic worth and dignity of children. They also believed that students had the right to be part of the design of their own education, created through a partnership with teachers and parents.

Within a few years, the school had outgrown the original facilities and a larger establishment was required. Parents and teachers then formed the Kino Learning Center, Inc. as a 501©3 non-​profit at its current 10-​acre location.

During the past four decades, Kino School has evolved into what it is today. Regardless of the changing educational winds that have blown across Arizona — from Back to Basics to Common Care to Authentic Assessment to AIMS testing — Kino School has remained steadfast in its commitment to small classes, individualized educational programming and
