History
Established in 1939.
Old Tucson came to life in 1939 when Columbia Pictures began building a replica of the 1860’s Tucson on Pima County land just west of the Tucson Mountains for its epic film Arizona starring Jean Arthur and newcomer William Holden. In their desire to recall the Tucson of the 1860’s, the set builders enlisted the knowledge and skill of the builders of the original city – the Tohono O’odham (formerly referred to as Papago).
Some of Hollywood’s most famous film stars have walked these dusty streets: John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Clint Eastwood, Michael Landon, Glen Ford, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone and Will Smith.
In 2011, the historic film location widened its focus to include programs that celebrate and recognize local history, heritage, and culture along with the building of a Native Village and Heritage Square creating twelve movie-quality sets.
