It’s the peak of Tucson’s summer and suddenly my car is hesitant to start. After having lunch at the excellent Chinese restaurant across the street, I headed into my neighborhood O’Reilly knowing they’d be able to test my car battery. The store was well-​staffed and I didn’t have to wait at all for an employee to grab a battery tester.
When the employee pulled the cap off the battery connection, we saw it was badly corroded. I also noticed the battery bulging a little on the side. «I guess we don’t need to test it,» I said. We went back inside, and he explained my options for a new battery. He also explained the rewards card and signed me up.
After I paid for the battery, the employee offered to install it for me. He cleaned off the corrosion and, with some effort and help from another employee, installed a difficult new battery which required an adapter to fit correctly — it’s smaller than the old battery. When I started the car, the engine was shaking around strangely. «See this piece here? When you get home, open it up and clean the sensor underneath, that’s all,» the employee told me.
