REAL HAWAIIAN SHAVE ICE, original flavors directly from Kapaa, Hawaii… our home town.

All original sauces and marinades, home made laulau’s and kalua pig, everyday fresh. Home of the Kalua Tropikal taco’s and Kalua Tropikal nacho’s.

History

Established in 2007.

Our family moved from Kauai, Hawaii about 20 years ago when our 3 daughters were 15, 8 and 7. Today they have their own families and have made a commitment to sacrafice all to have our own family restaurant. Here we are 2 ½ years later, our daughters along with their significant others and their children, cousins and a little help from our friends operate and manage Keanus Island Kine Food and Catering. We had a dream and pursued the dream knowing that the Lord was with us in this decision. We give praise and glory to Him and pray for all who come in through our doors… spreading the gift of Aloha!

It is with sad regret that on January 9, 2012, Keanu’s closed it’s doors due to the slow down in the economy. We so appreciate our loyal customers and the many who supported us through the last 5 years. We send our fond Aloha to all of you and may God bless you and your ohana! Reminds me of when I lived in Hawaii. The food is so good and the owners are really friendly! You can’t go wrong here: kalua tacos, chicken teriyaki, lumpia, etc. Yum and I love their Mac salad.

The first time I ate here was an awesome experience. As soon as I walked in I felt at home with the the Hawaiian flag hanging in the window, the mural of the Hawaiian islands on the wall, the fun island décor & the aloha sprite from the workers.
I ordered the da garlic shrimp it was a lil burned but teased good, & the ahi poki omg it was so good «broke da mouth» :) my hubby had the mochiko chicken «Ono» my kids had of course the spam musubi.
I haven’t been home in almost 4 yrs now n I do really miss the food n the aloha that is put in to the making of the food.
I was so happy to find this place that had offered that, but sadly all good must come to an end. They closed down the business n went back to the islands. I can’t tell u enough how broken hearted I felt: (
It is so hard to find GOOD authentic Hawaiian food. I really hope they come back n open up business again, coz we r starving lol

This may be one of the better Hawaiian foods around the area but it is not worth 4 stars! My group ordered all the types of plates suggested on Unilocal: mochico chicken, pulled pork, and tacos. I don’t really understand why so many people like the mochico chicken, it was dry, rock hard (not crispy) and there wasn’t enough sauce. I tried the pulled pork that my friend ordered, my first bite, I thought «this is what canned cat food taste.» The pulled pork was too salty and there was a weird mushy texture I wasn’t too fond of… The salsa + salmon with the pulled pork was weird, I don’t know if the salmon went bad or it just shouldn’t be made into salsa. All-​in-​all, I don’t think I would come back, very surprised so many people love this place.
Oh and this place should be $$ because a majority of the combo plates are expensive for Hawaiian food.

I LOVE Keanu’s! (…and have yet to find a suitable replacement in the PNW!) The only drawbacks I can think of are that Keanu’s is closed on Sundays which is tough for those not living in Vacaville to get their Hawaiian fix, sometimes the wait can be a little while (but it has always been worth it!), and there isn’t a lot of seating in the shop.
So why the LOVE for Keanu’s? The food is wonderful! Shaved ice, all the specials, spam musubi and LUMPIA!!! My husband is a sucker for all that savory stuff and just adores Keanu’s selections and often would take a roll of musubi for the drive home and just nom nom nom on it while driving. The macaroni salad here is SO GOOD — it’s not that horrible mayo-​goop you get at other Hawaiian places at all. Here it’s much lighter, has a touch of spice and tuna too. I may need to work on recreating this at home if I can’t find a suitable Keanu’s replacement in our new stomping ground… seriously good Hawaiian food!
Man, I could really go for a plate of anything from here right now and some lumpia too… mmmmm… ;)

I’ve tried Keanu’s twice and probably will not return. NEVER have I had to wait so long to be acknowledged by a cashier/​server in a quick service restaurant. I stood at the counter for the longest time before the woman on the other side decided to take my order. And I was the ONLY customer there.
The professionalism is really lacking here. Once my order was in she spent her time visiting with relatives and friends. At least they had a TV because I waited forever for my food too.
I’ve seen other reviews that mention they run out of food a lot here. I think this is inexcusable since they buy almost all of it at Sam’s Club — which is a mile away (4mins drive time)!

I’ve been here many times and always enjoy the food. I usually get the Mochiko Chicken because I know I like it, but get to try other things off the menu from my husband’s plate. Unfortunately every time my husband has been here, he has never been happy with his experience… whether it be the food, the service (slow) or the fact that they usually run out of something that we want to order. Tonight I think was the last straw for him. They ran out of Loco Moco, LauLau and SPAM! What did save them tonight was their Ahi Poke which was really good (as usual).
I will definitely be back, because I prefer Keanu’s over the other island spots in the area. They are more authentic with very tasty food and they are very nice folks. Sadly I don’t think my husband will be back. I would give them four stars if their service was a bit faster and if they wouldn’t always run out of items.

Keanu’s is a nice little gem tucked away amongst the sea of mediocre chains that all clamor for your attention as you make your way to or from the bay. It’s been years since I had a real plate lunch so I was excited to hear by word of mouth that Keanu’s was legit.
Of course as fate would have it, I happened to pay visit JUST when they sold out everything. No Lau Lau, no poke, not even any Hawaiian Sun to wash it down.
I decided to settle for some Mochiko Chicken, and a Kalua pig. Both dishes were alright; however, I can definitely see why some people complain about the food being too salty. Luckily, the side of Lomi and steamed rice did wonders to balance out the saltiness of the pork.
The owners were very friendly and I loved the sense of Ohana permeating the establishment. Still though, I’d have to come back on a day when they actually have the full menu available before I can bump them up one star.

This is my go to place for as close as authentic Hawaiian food I can get to within my area. The folks here are awesome, personable and make you feel at home. The food is absolutely delicious and everytime I return it’s always so difficult to make a decision. So far I’ve had the mochico chicken plate (most plates come with two scoops of rice and mac salad), the crispy battered shrimp plate (not the name of it but the flavor I can remember to be quite delectable and light, not at all too greasy), along with a couple of Kaluha (sp?) tropical tacos, their shanghai lumpia (complimentary after 3-​check ins via Unilocal) and a number of other items that don’t come to mind at the moment.
I vow to myself to try out the locomoco plate but it’s so hard to stray away with what I’m already comfortable with but to say the least when they come out with plates that I have yet to try, they all look very good to the eye and with generous portions at that. Definitely have to try everything on the menu at this place! Yea, I’m such a pig. Check this place out. Happy eating and mahalo! :)

Those who like Keanu’s Island Kine Food don’t really know Hawaiian food. Or, it could have just have been my bad luck to catch them on an off day.
I ordered the KAHLUA PIG PLATE, a staple for Hawaiian cuisine, and, on my first bite, I could taste the saltiness of the ocean that surrounds Hawaii. It was not a bit salty, it was overbearingly salty. It was as if the North Shore had just grabbed a hold of me and drowned me in its salt filled coffin.
What’s up with the rice?
Hawaiian’s love rice!
A measly 2 mini scoops of rice cannot represent Hawaiian cuisine. (Please view my photo.) If there was more rice, I probably could have finished my meal, but there wasn’t, so I didn’t bother. I think I probably would have been sick if I finished my plate anyways. «Why finish your food if it was so salty,» you say? Well there are hungry people in the world who would die for any meal, even meals as horrid as mine. Waste not, want not.
The Shoyu Chicken and breakfast items at Keanus’ were just OK. Actually, I think they didn’t even make the Shoyu Chicken right. Usually Shoyu Chicken is made with thigh meat, not a drumstick as they introduced. Shoyu Chicken can be made with drumsticks inside Hawaiian homes, but not at restaurants. This place is no Side Street Inn, it’s not even an L&L. The staff and owner are friendly here, but avoid going here if you really know about Hawaiian food.
The prices here are steep too. Some items can cost close to $ 20. You’re better off saving your money, going to Hawaii, and eating at a real Hawaiian kitchen restaurant for much better prices and better food.

Awesome! Finally broke out and tried the tacos and they rocked! Delicious, smokey Kalua pig with mango salsa on soft tortillas… simple and delectable! Everyone was in an infectious good mood; even my daughter mentioned that everyone working at Keanu’s was nice! I thought that was cool and added to the happy dining experience.

Checked this place out today with the hubby and they do have some of the truly most authentic Hawaiian food we’ve tasted yet. Here’s what we had and the verdict:
Plate #1: BBQ ribs plate with rice, beans, mac salad and sweet roll–
LOVED the ribs, good flavor and tender. I did think the bakes beans were a bit too sweet and although their mac salad was OK, I still kinda prefer the more traditional kind without the peas and other seasonings. The sweet roll was good but not baked by them.
Plate #2: We had the trio combo with their Kahlua pulled pork, Waikiki meatballs and BBQ chicken–
Loved the meatballs, it kind of reminded me of sweet and sour pork as it had the pineapples and peppers/​onions only with meatballs. The Pulled pork was EXCELLENT (even though I’m normally not a fan of this type of dish) and lastly the BBQ chicken was just OK for me. Not that I don’t appreciate it being cooked right on the grill, but it was missing that teriyakii/​BBQ flavor that it has at those Hawaiian drive through.
And finally, we had their Freshly made Strawberry Lilikoi which I have to say is SO much better than the canned and finally had a small container of their «Poi» dessert to go (basically a taro pudding type of dessert that has a hint of plum flavor in it and is considered a healthy dessert) now when I had this dessert in Hawaii years ago, I can’t remember if it was a bit sweeter but although this one seemed to have no sugar added, it still had a nice flavor to it but would have appreciated a hint of sweetness to distinguish it as dessert.
Overall, the service is one of the friendliest you can encounter for the area, prices are reasonable and the food is overall a lot better quality and taste than that of those Hawaiian chains. Definitely stop here if you’re ever shopping at the outlet mall and be sure to sign their guest book and sign up for special promotions/​birthday/​anniversary club! :)

Came here for the first time couple months ago while I was in the area. I ordered the garlic shrimp plate and my fiancé had the kalua pig. Both were absolutely delicious and authentic in my opinion. I especially love the shrimp plate. It reminded me of the one I had in Oahu. I do have to say that this is the best island food I’ve ever had outside of Hawaii! Not to mention that their service was excellent. It’s a small, to-​go kind of place with only a few tables, but they were so nice and they actually brought my food to me instead of calling me to pick it up when it was ready.
After eating at Keanu’s, I don’t even want to go back to any of the Hawaiian food chains. I’m not trying to say that they are bad, but Keanu’s is just a whole whole whole lot better! If only it’s not almost an hour away from me, I would eat there every week! Anyway, I’m definitely coming back for more!

This is a good place because of the food but a great place because of the atmosphere and faculty that work there. I live right across the street and have only eaten here within the past 2 weeks but wished I would’ve discovered this place sooner. The chicken Teriyaki is bomb and the servings are adequate. The shaved ice is spectacular! I love the coconut one. mm I’m thinking about it right now.
Right when you walk into the door they greet you with a «Mahalo» which I think in Hawaiian means «hello handsome» lol. Overall the food is Deeelish and the service is excellent. They keep the place tidy too, I like the chalkboard menus. makes me feel like I’m a kid again =).
**Update**
So I tried their Shabu chicken and fried spam saimem and I think I have a new favorite. The Spam Saimen is deli-​sh! I’ve tried another flavor of the Hawaiian ice other than coconut and I think I’ll be sticking with the coconut from now on. Oh and I can’t rave enough about the lumpia lol. The stuff is great.

I will drive 30 miles to come eat at Keanu’s. No other place can compare except IN Hawaii.
Today we had the Kalua pig plate with lomi lomi salmon and mac salad & the teriyaki chicken plate with beans and mac salad. Big enough portions to make a meal and a half.
Service is great and laid back. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. I love that I don’t have to tell them how to pronounce my name correctly and they say it right every time.

First off, this place has the most authentic Hawaiian/​Local food in the area. Owned and run by locals.
With that said, when we’re craving good local food, this is the only spot we go to. Forget about L&L and Ohana. I usually go with the kalua pig or lau lau. The kids love their mochiko chicken and shave ice. Oh and the spam musubi are huge.

Came here today for the 21 399 084 098 time for dinner. They usually close at 7pm on Saturdays, but they had such a large crowd that they decided to stay open a little later. It was just our luck because it was about 645pm when we started having cravings for Keanu’s!
This time we tried the Painolo Breakfast and the Fried Spam Saimin.
Painolo Breakfast — Bacon fried rice, egg, spam, and a side of mac
That rice was AMAZING!
Fried Saimin — It’s all the ingredients of the saimin without the soup. They basically fry it up like crunchy noodles. I liked it!

POST 100! What better place to celebrate a review than with Keanu’s! To put it in mellow, Eating at Keanu’s really reminds me of being in Hawaii. The taste, the smell, the warm greetings from the employee’s. It’s VERY family oriented and I just feel like I’m part of that big family that comes in ever so often.
The food has that home cooking feel I love so much. A few faves: EVERYTHING, lol. The Mochiko Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken, Ahi Poki and Kahlua pig are all favorites. You can never go wrong with their mouth watering Kahlua Pig Taco’s, grab 3 and get 1 free! All Day Breakfast is a treat as well, the Panaloa (sp?) fried rice with Spam is major. There’s a whole lotta love that goes into all of their food. As an added treat, try some of their assorted shaved ice!
Once you go Keanu’s, You’ll never eat L&L again! This place put’s them to shame!

After reading some reviews on Unilocal,my boyfriend and I decided to stop by Keanu’s for dinner on our way back from our ski trip in Tahoe. I must say, it was definitely worth it. As starters, it’s really close to the freeway (right off 80). =)
For appetizers, we ordered a masubi to share, and it was really delicious! Matter of fact, it was so good, we ended up ordering 3 more to-​go so we could share another one, and bring the other two to our family. For meals, I had the chicken tonkatsu and my boyfriend had the mochiko chicken (which came with rice and a side of mac salad. other than the peas inside the salad, I thought the mac salad was pretty good as well). Both dishes were very tasty, and the portions were fairly generous. If I had to choose one of the two to recommend, I would probably recommend the mochiko chicken.
The staff was also extremely friendly! It’s a family owned shop and they undoubtedly have the ‘aloha’ spirit in them!
We will definitely be back!
