I used to love going to the Sherman Room, their garlic bread was to die for. I worked for a short time as a hostess there and years later came back to visit and waitresses that had been there when I was a hostess were still there. So sorry to see it close.

Great service, Really great steaks for $ 20.00, get the soup not the iceberg only salad. Not for people on a diet. Feels like 1971 inside.

We are BEYOND sad to learn of the Sherman Room’s closing. We’ve come here many, many times over the years and have brought friends and family here. Everyone loved it. Sherman Room was old school. Naugahyde booths, wood paneled walls, waitresses who’ve been there for ages, good steaks at a good price. Places like this are getting fewer and further between, my friends. And it sucks. Character is not appreciated anymore. I do hope the bartender there finds another bar to work in where there’s not a lot of swearing. I was scolded by him a number of times for my salty language. I’ll miss that guy. But my feelings about the Sherman Room closing can be summed up with just one word, said over and over: FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK.(Sorry, bartender dude).

December 2013 So sad to see that our beloved Sherman Room has closed. To the owners, wait staff, bartenders, chefs, bus staff and cleaning crew, thank you for making me a happy lady for so many years. I want to hug each and every one of you. You had a great place, and I’m sorry for this cruddy economy and all-you-can-eat dump food that you were forced to compete with. You were my first date with my husband 29 years ago, and we celebrated our 25th anniversary with you earlier in the year. Thanks for the memories. You will be missed. xoxo Shari

The owner is retiring and yet ANOTHER L.A. landmark will be gone if someone doesn’t step up and buy the place. Please spread the word, we can’t let yet another piece of L.A.‘s history to fall through the cracks. Do we REALLY need another Walgreen’s/Starbucks/Pei Wei in L. A???

Review just for bar! I have some strict criteria when it comes to the kind of bar I like to go to for a casual drink… and the Sherman Room sure met my particular criteria! 1) Old School Appearance that makes you believe you have stepped into another era… CHECK! 2) Average age of the patrons is older than age 60… CHECK! 3) Bartender is an old man in a jacket and tie… CHECK! 4) Drinks are cheap… CHECK!!! More on the drink prices… I got an Old Fashioned and my husband got a Tom Collins… for 2 drinks, the bar tab was $ 10.75! We laughed out loud! Clearly, you can barely go anyplace in LA these days and find 1 drink for under $ 12, let alone get 2 drinks for under $ 11! So, if you want to go and grab a cocktail and you’re on a budget, the Sherman Room is a fine option! I took a star away because we were greeted with a very weird vibe when we tried to sit at the bar… basically, like we were strangers walking into a small town bar, where we weren’t welcome. An elderly lady at the bar chastised my husband when he tried to move a bar stool, so he and I could sit together. Instantly, a staff member intervened and basically kicked us out of the bar and made us sit in a booth instead, I guess so we wouldn’t upset the regulars with our presence?!

not impressed… I love this place, but… had a crappy waitress this time. She never ever came around… we had to hunt her down for every little thing. And, this is the second time my steak has been super hard to cut, and raw in the inside. I’m sick of it. I wont come back if this is how they’re gonna run things. The owner– we saw him sitting down having dinner! On the clock, mind you. OMG.

I live right down the road from this place, and I was really hopeful it would be good, but it simply was awful. I ordered the ground steak and it was bland, then covered in some terribly tasting sauce. Garlic bread was pathetic. Fries were ok. Fries were the only hero here. I will give this place one more shot on a Friday, when they have their Fish & Chips special, but if that is not good, I will not return. So we’ll see…

I came here for a family dinner. This place is the epitome of old school family dining! The place looks like it hash’t changed in 50 years(probably hasn’t). It’s cozy and the lights are dim and they have a separate bar on the other side of the restaurant. The server was nice but my only complaint(concern) is that when she brought the garlic bread out for my friends’ mother, it fell upside down onto the table. She picked it up with her fingers and then placed in back on her plate! Now, one could debate this(I would have offered her a new piece of bread) but if her reasoning was that they keep their tables immaculately clean then I dunno… still very unexpected from a waitress to put it back on someone’s plate. Everyone was a bit surprised. To say something good about this place, the food wasn’t bad, the drinks are strong! I might go back… if only to sit at the bar next time.

My wife and I went to the Sherman Room a few months ago with some friends and wow… what an experience. On the outside the place looks like a dive bar but once you go inside you are transported back to the 60s. This felt like the type of restaurant that my grandparents would have gone to back in the day. If your not into a quirky old place I wouldn’t check it out. If you want to have a decent meal at a fun old style restaurant check it out!

This place is definitely past it’s prime. The décor is hopelessly stuck in the 60’s…it doesn’t look like they’ve changed a thing since they opened. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing… can sometimes be charming. But this place just seems dirty and dingy. I went the other night with a party of maybe 10… hardly unmanageable. They had two servers helping our party and they just seemed overwhelmed. Service was slow and not very friendly. Food was not good… salad was just iceburg… not even a tomato or a sliver of cabbage. The clam chowder was a strange color that just tasted funky. None of the steaks were cooked to order… the tarter sauce tasted like mayo… bread was burned… I could go on and on but I think you get the idea. They don’t even sell a name brand soda, but some knock off generic version that tastes awful. Save your money!

As Todd J. had said, the inside does feel a bit like an old gentleman’s club. This restaurant is your grandmother and grandfather’s steak house. Long before the days of Ruth’s Chris and Arnie’s…sat the Sherman Room. The menu is fairly limited, with steak being the main attraction. There are only four cuts to choose from: petit sirloin, full sirloin, new york and filet. Each steak is served with garlic bread, your choice of french fries or baked potato and either soup or salad. I began with a blue cheese salad and my friend, the soup de jour — split pea. Their«house made» blue cheese is odd. I like blue cheese dressing because it doesn’t have the tanginess of ranch dressing typically, yet this blue cheese was extremely tangy. It turns out that the dressing is actually mixed with Thousand Island, which makes more sense now. Not the biggest fan. The salad itself was just a bowl of iceberg lettuce. No cabbage. No carrots. No croutons. Not even a little piece of red onion. Just a plain bowl of iceberg. The split pea soup was okay, but lacked seasoning. My friend had to add Tabasco to liven it up. I ordered the filet, cooked medium rare, with a baked potato. The steak was cooked to my liking, but lacked flavor. I attribute this partly to it being a filet. None of the cuts offered contain that much fat, which is where the flavor is born. The baked potato was served with butter, sour cream and chives and was your standard potato. They also give you two generous slabs of garlic bread, which is pretty tasty. Service was good, though slow at times. However, we were a party of about 18, so some lag can be expected. A major service downside though is that they don’t take reservations. Normally, this would be problematic for a group of our size. However, in this case, the restaurant was empty and remained empty for the entire evening. The prices are also ridiculously cheap for a steak house, which is nice. I couldn’t see paying that much more for what we got. Would I come here again outside of an event I was invited to? No, probably not. There are just too many better places out there. 2-stars: «Meh. I’ve experienced better.»

This place has seen better days. The inside is oddly charming with a musty gentleman’s club vibe. It takes you back to the steak houses of the 60’s and it looks like not much has changed since then. The food. I have yet to have a steak that wasn’t overcooked, tough and gritty. Bad luck I suppose since the steaks came highly recommend by friends. You can have any kind of salad dressing you want as long as it’s the house thousand/blue cheese. Servers have been friendly and accommodating as if to say«we understand the quality has declined a bit…»

Been going to the Sherman Room for 20 years. The last few times were below par. Our last visit, last Friday, will be the last. My husband and I each ordered fillets. I asked the waitress specifically how to order the steak so it has very little pink. She said to order it medium well. We did, and the steaks came out charred on the outside and COLD and red in the middle. Not just the middle but almost throughout. We sent it back and mine was okay but my husband had to resend it. The waitress didn’t even have the courtesy to apologize but acted aloof that she had to send it back. The butter is not real butter but this oily yellow substance. Also, the salad is simply iceberg lettuce with a few cabbage sprinkles and tomato. That wasn’t an issue because the place used to offer great steaks at a reasonable price. The place used to be packed. We went around 7:00pm and there were people at three other tables and a few people at the bar. They hiked their prices up and the service and food has deteriorated. The service used to be great with the likes of Sally(really miss her). It’s really a shame to see such a popular restaurant/landmark like the Sherman Room go downhill. Oh yeah, the last time the lobster wasn’t cooked all the way through. Sad to say, I can’t get myself to eat there again. Well, maybe to get take out garlic bread.

I went to the Sherman Room on the recommendation of my co-worker. It reminded me a lot of the Safari Room in Granada Hills. Same kind of decore, same musty smell. We had a good experience with only a couple of issues: 1) The house dressing — not a fan of blue cheese mixed w/thousand island 2) The steaks — although the steaks were quite big and had a good flavor, but they were a little tough. Would I go back? Yes because the people were nice and the food was good, I just only wish they would make sure the steaks were not tough.

I came here at a suggestion from a coworker. Décor is old with vinyl booths and bar seats. Staff seem to have been here from the beginning, and very friendly. They are known for their steaks, so I ordered a steak sandwich. The thick, juicy, tender meat came with a salad(in this case lettuce drenched in dressing) garlic bread and thick steak fries. If you like simple meals, with simple folk, come here.

I visited this quaint place the other night at the advice of a friend. When I walked in I saw a gentleman with a steak on his plate and immediately told the waitress that I wanted what the gentleman had on his plate. It was a what appeared to be a one and a half inch thick filet mignon. It was incredibility delicious! Great prices! And the food and service was excellent! Don’t be fooled by the décor and the area. One of the best steak houses I have ever visited.

I really enjoyed our visit to the Sherman room. I ordered a gigantic New York Steak, vegetable soup, and split a side of mushrooms in a delicious wine, garlic and butter sauce. I will say that everything needed salt… lots of salt. I don’t mind adding my own seasoning. The service was good. Our lady had a big party and a bunch of other tables to serve and didn’t seem to have a problem keeping up. Drinks were poured nicely as well. I like a little extra bourbon with my rocks. I think the bill was very reasonable for a hole in the wall steakhouse. This establishment is old looking because it is. Don’t let that scare you away because you will be missing out on a great steak!
