The Barber’s Pole

I’m very particular regarding who cuts my hair. I’m new to Vancouver and wanted to find a barber. I visited this barbershop and David trimmed me up. I’m very impressed with David’s skills and place of business. David seems to be a fantastic barber and human being.

Got my first beard trim and haircut from Nathan today, super professional, listened to what I wanted and did just that. I’ll definitely be going back, not a lot of people on Vancouver that can groom beards but this guy can.

Awesome place to get a shave and trim. Old time barbershop feel. Well worth the time. I highly recommend for the price get the best haircut around.

Came here based on Unilocal reviews. Close to home. Gary was great. Fixed a bad haircut from somewhere else that a month did not improve. Reasonable price. Good service. I’ll be changing to these guys.

Excellent haircut! I have finally found a place to get a haircut on regular basis. He took his time and tge haircut definitely shows it. Best place to get a men’s haircut.

Writing this review post my second haircut with beard trim and straight bladed razor shave at this location. Figure I can give them a fair review at this point.
Like a relaxed barber who doesn’t talk a ton? Gary’s a calm and easy going dude who does good work.
Want an outgoing dude to talk to a bunch? Dave seems to be the talkative type and definitely knows what he’s up to.
Gary was the barber for both of my Haircuts. He seems quite knowledgable, and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments afterwards every time so his work surely shines. I’ve been to a few meh barbers around the country, and then some nicer ones… and this is amongst the nicer ones for service. They do good work for sure and are recommended for a reason. I’ve also visited a few other barbers around the Washington area, and few know what they’re doing as well as this shop.

My husband keeps searching for the perfect barber. I hopped on Unilocal first thing this morning and saw Barber’s Pole had 5 stars. Read the reviews and hit the place at 9am.
Gary and David were fabulous and the haircut was nothing less. Wife approved! I found my husband the perfect place!

The BEST place for a mens haircut. Came here for the very first time on friday ⁹⁄₁₈ about half an hour before they closed. My fiancé needed to be cleaned up before our wedding and with the reviews i figured it was better than supercuts. Right off the bat we were greeted and my fiancé got right in. Long story short, dave and gary are honestly the coolest dudes ever. They’re very personable and make you feel like youve been life long friends even though you just met them. Gary was the one who did my fiances hair but they both do stellar jobs!!! Extremely inexpensive for the work they do. They also take their time which is an A+. They kept us about 30 min past their close time just because gary was making sure everything was perfect; they dont rush you out the door! I HIGHLY recommend these guys if you want the best haircut/​face shave of your life!!!

Heard about The Barber’s Pole on Unilocal.Had my hair cut in Seattle, changed Hair Salons several times in the Seattle area because of the way the waves in my hair grow. Been told many times that my hair is hard to cut. After recently moving to Vancouver, I was ready to have my haircut, so I went to The Barber’s Pole, based on recommendations on Unilocal.Found the place clean, professional, and inviting. Gary did an excellent job cutting my hair — as you see in the picture I have attached. Gary was also very attentive, noticing that my eyebrows needed trimming, he went ahead and did a very skillful trim. Then he finished my haircut with a razor shave of my neck and a hot towel at no extra charge. I m sold! The Barber’s Pole is the place to go to have my hair cut in Vancouver from now on! Sam

Great place. Gary embodies the art and history behind being a true barber. His attention to detail ensures a perfect cut every time that lasts, and his ability to sculpt and shape a beard is the best I’ve experienced.
The owner, Dave is pleasant and, from what I’ve witness while sitting in Gary’s chair, extremely skilled as well.
Prices are very reasonable. Compared to other places I have been in Vancouver with a red white and blue striped pole, there is nobody else who comes close the the quality you get when you sit in Gary’s chair.

Nice clean place. Very friendly folks. Gary cut my hair and did a great job. They also do straight razor shaves.

Gary reached out to me on Unilocal and offered a refund or a free service, which was definitely not necessary and greatly appreciated. I’ve amended my original 2-​star review to three, just for the quality of customer service alone.
Maybe my head reacted poorly to the shaving cream or something?
Original review as follows:
This is a tough review to write. Guys were great, friendly, and welcoming — came in for a head shave/​beard shave combo via straight razor. I should note that Gary was assigned to me, not the owner Dave, who was quickly tied up with another customer. Don’t know if Gary’s still learning the straight razor or not, but I don’t think that really justifies the beating my head took under his blade.
I’ve done straight razor shaves before, and due to the occasional blemish or tough spot already present on my head (or my skin’s sensitivity), I might end up with some redness or even a nick or two, but they’ll go away within a day. I also shave my own head semi-​weekly with a Merkur double-​edged safety razor, and I rarely, if ever, nick myself. So it was alarming how much my head was on fire by the end of this shave… Should’ve known it was getting bad when Gary kept trying to do things to calm the rage my hair follicles were in, via cold compress, hot compress, cold water rinse, eucalyptus oil, plus an aftershave something or other that burned like the surface of the motherfrakkin’ sun. Shave also went far longer than quoted — originally told 30 – 45 minutes, it took over an hour just for the head alone, and I ended up having to leave before we could get to the face. To Gary’s credit, despite going over my bearded area already with an electric razor, he only charged me for the head shave, hence why this isn’t a one-​star review.
Only after leaving did I realize how nicked-​up I was, with razor burn and blood marks across the sides and back of my head, plus razor burn on both the back and front of neck (some of which was also caused by the electric razor… I never get burn from an electric razor, so I’m still trying to figure that one out). To make matters worse, this was just before a ten-​year high school reunion, so I was forced to buy a hat from Freddy’s and cover up my dome. Only now, Wednesday, five days after the fact, is my head almost back to normal.
Again, I’m bummed to have to write this, as Gary and Dave were fantastic people, great to talk to, and Dave did a great haircut on the older gentleman next to me; I also know straight-​razor shaving is bloody (heh) difficult, but whatever happened to my head was not pleasant. Go for the friendly service and reasonable prices, but if I were you, I’d ask for Dave if you need a straight-​razor… Or maybe just stick to haircuts when you visit.

Great little barber shop. Took kids in for cuts and the both walked out looking good. Both barbers did their part to make kids feel comfortable, although it didn’t have a «kids cut» feel to the place. Great find.

I recently followed Gary to his friend David’s shop. Together they make a very talented pair. The shop is well lit and clean. They do everything you would expect a traditional barber to do. I get a 1−¼ fade and beard trim. The entire experience is premium and the results are always consistent. Plenty of people comment on how even my fade is and how well my beard is shaped. These guys don’t charge a premium either. Strongly recommended!

Dave does an outstanding job and actually listens and knows what he’s doing. I’m so happy to finally find someone who can cut my hair and it’s a lot cheaper then the salons charge. I’m gonna need to get in for a shave next. Thanks Dave… I’ll definitely be back.

David is an excellent barber, and knows exactly what he is doing. This barbershop is exactly what I was looking for in the area. The prices are moderate but are worth it.

The Barber Pole is great! Just what I was looking for! David, the owner, knows what he is doing. I got a great cut with a straight razor neck trim and hot towel. At $ 17 for a haircut, it was a fair price (I have paid $ 15 easy at those «super» places).
I highly recommend this traditional barber shop — I know it will be my regular place from now on!

What a relief to finally have a real barber cut my hair like a man’s haircut! I thought the traditional barbershop was dead and gone. I’ve had too many really bad haircuts from beauty salons which also do men’s haircuts. Give David a try, not only a superb barber but also a great conversationalist. Next month I’m going for the haircut and shave package.
