History
Established in 2000.
The doors of the first VTA dojang opened on Thanksgiving weekend 2000. It was not called Vancouver Taekwondo Academy then and the facility was more akin to a closet than a proper training hall. It was, however, a foot in the door for a side project that would, in time, become a full-time occupation. After fifteen years of providing martial arts instruction through local dojangs, the Vancouver Public School Intramural program, the Western Washington University Womens’ Center, and even the local 24 Hour Fitness, Chief Instructor William Scott Browning discovered that enough demand had grown for his personal touch on the Korean discipline of taekwondo that it merited an independent operation. The school started small to allow the emphasis to remain on quality rather than quantity of students and instruction. In due time, the program has grown to include many highly regarded black belts and a few national champions in the sport of Olympic taekwondo.
