Description

Specialties

Garden Art 201 is a weekend mosaic and sculpture class held at the art studio of Dean Hanmer on Vashon Island, Washington.

Each participant creates their own sculpture using cement mortars and a variety of other materials, which is then decorated with mosaic. This is one of the few places where the creation of 100% outdoor durable art is taught, hence the name Garden Art 201.

Creating your own sculpture may sound hard, but its not. Students of all ages and skill levels love the class and the experience, not to mention taking home their own Garden Art Masterpiece.

Vashon Island is just a short ferry ride from Seattle and Tacoma and participants come from the entire Puget Sound area. Because the class meets from 12 – 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, commuting is easy or stay on Vashon Island for a complete weekend holiday.

Private art classes are offered during the week and the Garden Art Gallery features art for sale by Dean Hanmer. Join Dean for a wonderful weekend of art!

History

Established in 2011.

After many years of exhibiting and selling sculpture at art events around the country and teaching mosaic at local community colleges and art centers, Dean Hanmer opened his own expansive art studio to the public.

Here people come from far and wide to spend a weekend learning how to create sculpture and mosaic or stroll the sculpture garden, which Dean is creating a broad expanse overlooking Puget Sound.

Part sculpture garden, part art studio, surrounded by birds, forests, and water, Dean has created an art retreat and a unique garden art experience.

A guesthouse cottage opened on the grounds in 2012 where guests can stay, rest and rejuvenate. Some stay for a one week sculpture and mosaic intensive, some for the weekend, and some come to work on their own projects, writing, meditation, or finding solitude and beauty on a quiet rural island.
