Pretty good food, quick service for eating during happy hour. Would come back if in the area for good sushi. Definitely well priced for the amount of food served in the combo platter.

I really like this spot. I have been frequenting Sumo for years now. The sushi chefs have come and gone over the years. Maybe even new owner since I don’t recognize anyone from the past. The food is good the service is good. The wait can be terrible at times but that’s my only real gripe… Oh and I love reverse happy hour!

Sumo is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant not only for its amazing fresh fish but also the great happy hour deals. This restaurant would be nothing without its unique and friendly staff!

Everything is delicious here and especially for the price you pay.
I could walk out here full with spending $ 10 and that’s coming from someone with a big appetite
Also, servers are always so friendly and accommodating, even when it’s busy.

The best sushi in town!!! Mari is the best waitress and Iwan is an awesome sushi chef!!! Eduardo and Edith make the best tag team! They are the reasons I will keep coming back again and again! They make this eating experience one I will look forward to doing again!!!

This place is absolutely amazing Iwan the sushi chef and Mari the server are the best they didn’t let my drink go low, got my salad out in a jiffy and had the most positive attitude that made this place above five stars above… Iwan the sushi chef made my sushi and a dozen rolls to go for other people and didn’t sacrifice quality will def come back

I just went today for Dinner. Great food I really LOVE the rolls, great prices, and great service!!! I had a great experience at this restaurant especially from a young lady she had EXCELLENT customer service. I had to get her name so when next time I come she is my hostess her name is Linda make sure to ask for her she’s awesome and will take her time to serve you the best. Really recommend this restaurant!!!

This has been my to go place for sushi for years! Food is always great, fresh and tasty. I love their happy hour options. Staff is always polite and welcoming. I have tried other sushi restaurants and I keep coming back to this one! You can’t beat their prices, service and quality.

Great food we came for happy hour hat the HOT roll which was great. The laker roll was good but very spicy. Our server Carolina was awesome and very attentive!

First thing I asked for… a Fork, yes I’m one of those people, can’t work a chop stick to save my life, and if I tried it would probably end up flying across the room and into someones hair.
The Sushi is fresh and as always I ordered more than I could eat, we ended up ordering the Snow Roll which consisted of Avocado, Cream Cheese, Red Onion, & Tilapia (soo good!) then on to the Rose roll which had Spicy tuna, Shrimp tempura, Cucumber, & Avocado; and the Philadelphia Roll, we then ordered Udon with Shrimp & Vegetable tempura.
Everything was delicious, the only bummer was they use imitation crab on most of the rolls, but otherwise the food was spot on.
Our server was a dead ringer for one of my Unilocal buddies, I was about to ask him what he was doing in Ventura, until I saw his name tag.
Service was good, they were quick to serve, and also quick to clean our table, but never rushed us to leave.
Not a bad way to spend a Sunday Afternoon, good food, nice enviroment, and a full belly.

Had a craving for sushi tonight and sherry going to Genmai and having my ears accosted by super loud music, my boyfriend and I decided to come here. We were really surprised that they had amazing prices. I was expecting to pay around $ 5 for salmon sushi but because we dined in, it was only 2.61! Soooo, we loaded up. Yummy seared garlic albacore delicious thick cut salmon pieces. Tasty shrimp and the scallop was the best we’ve had.
We ordered 3 salmon sushi, 1 order of gyoza, 1 raspberry champagne sake something, 1 scallop, 2 shrimp sushi, 1 spicy tuna sushi, 1 seared albacore and water all for $ 28. Insane!
Love this place. Will definitely be returning.

We came to Sumo earlier this week for late night happy hour from 9p to close! They have pretty good food and drink specials ranging from $ 3 to $ 9.50. It was packed when we walked in at 9:30p, we actually had to wait about 10 minutes to get seated. Our server was very nice and accommodating. It seemed like the had a lot of good appetizer specials for HH but, we were here for the sushi! We ordered 6 rolls, which was a crap ton of food for three people and totaled to $ 35, score! Even one specialty roll was quite hardy. The plain sushi, is about $ 1.50−3, not bad at all. But, I like my sushi a little dressed. The specialty rolls I liked were about $ 7, which is amazingly priced.
We ordered the spicy tuna roll, the albacore roll, the red dragon roll, the rainbow roll, the sumo roll, and the alaskan roll. I loved the baked salmon in the alaskan roll. I wished they had a brown rice option and other low carb sushi rolls. We will be back here for sure, cheers!

I’m not a huge sushi eater but I do like this place. The best time to come is during their happy hour which is from 3pm-​6pm (Mon-​Friday only) or their reverse happy hour from 9pm-​11pm (last call at 10:30pm). That’s when you can get the most bang for your buck. For starters they aren’t unreasonably priced, but who doesn’t like to save a little money. My usual is the scallop roll or the alaskan roll minus the smelt eggs (not a fan!) Oddly enough for a sushi restaurant they also have french fries. They are pretty good and a nice appetizer to start with if that won’t throw your tastebuds off too much.
When I come it’s usually with friends, about 3 to 5 of us. So the down side is that we aren’t the only people (in a big group) in the mood for sushi. Some nights we have to wait about 30−45mins. to be seated. Once your’e in it’s fine but the wait is a turn off. I believe if they had a bigger place this would cut the wait time down to half.
Other than the wait, it’s not a bad place to get some good sushi with some good friends.

I don’t love to write bad reviews, so I will keep this short.
Although I’ve lived nearby for five years, I never made it to Sumo as I was skeptical about the quality based on the pictures, prices and reviews.
Anyway, a friend invited me to go here so I went being a good sport and I just ordered a large Sapporo, an order of hamachi nigiri and a spicy tuna roll.
The beer was warm and so was the fish. Also, the quality of the fish was very low.
The service was nice and the happy hour prices would be a great deal if the food wasn’t bad.
1 star as in spite of good service and a convenient location, Sumo’s food quality comes up extremely short.

My favourite sushi place here in Ventura. The food is really fresh. I love the phili roll, the baked salmon roll is my absolute favourite and the spicy tuna roll is just equally delicious. The selection they have is just mind blowing. My husband usually takes the sashimi and diggs it. Spicy tuna salad is «da bomb» too if you want a lighter version of the spicy tuna roll. The place is almost always packed but it’s usually a short wait of 10 – 15 minutes given you’re not too big if a party. Servers are quick and ready to take your orders as soon as you are ready. Once ordered, the rolls come out pretty quickly and the baked rolls are still steaming. OMG. So yummi.
I love the fact that they are having happy hours after 9pm — really gives you the bang for your buck. Unfortunately Happy Hour is only valid for dine-​in. That’s the only thing they could improve on. ;)

Chirashi bowl: really nice presentation. Sashimi is okay.
Lunch special — pork katsu and tempura. Katsu was thin and dry. Tempura had good flavor but under cooked. Sides that came with the lunch specials were good.
Lunch special — chicken teriyaki and tempura. Decent meal, good enough to satisfy one’s craving.
Spider roll: good
Rainbow roll: good
Salmon skin roll: okay
Broiled yellow tail collar: this is what I will always always always order when I go here again. Great big chunk of broiled yellow tail with the collar bone on it and oh man oh man that was good.
They have really good service here. And their restrooms are clean.

This happy hour deal is becoming more and more well known! When we arrived at 4:30 on a weekday we were promptly given our menus and drink orders were taken. We looked around and several other tables were occupied with people happily enjoying colorful sushi assortments. The happy hour menu was very appealing and the prices were quite reasonable. It was hard to believe this was for real.
We chose a range of items from the happy hour menu which included sushi, rolls, sashimi and edamame. The udon soup and kids chicken bento box were our selections from the regular menu.
I have to say we were pleasantly surprised! Everything was great with only two exceptions. The broth of the udon soup was just ok, while it contained a large amount of onions the flavor was missing. I’ve never seen so many onions in udon soup. The other exception was the tempura as it was a tad greasy.
I’d come back and I’d also recommend this place as a go to for people with kids or folks wanting a sushi meal. It’s not fancy by any stretch however, with excellent service and helpful staff it’s easy to see why this restaurant is so popular.

The food is pretty awesome! The service was spectacular and our server was very efficient in delivering our drinks, appetizers, meals and dessert without missing a beat.
I loved the Rainbow Roll… The fish was very delicious and fresh and it was presented visually enticing as well. We will definitely go again.
