It’s been nearly 10 years since Hurricane Katrina tore through Louisiana and Mississippi. Even when it seems like time sits still… it sort of flies by. I still can’t talk about Katrina without crying and maybe that’s just me. I am admittedly a sappy fool, though. I wanted to visit this gallery specifically for the artist’s series of portraits of people in the aftermath of Katrina. They are haunting, sobering and tear inducing. I waited till the end to look this set and good thing I did. She’s brilliantly talented and I love her depictions of the south so much. But I left in tears. If you can feel a person’s emotions in a photo or painting… that’s powerful stuff ladies and gentlemen. Very powerful.

I wanted to have a reminder of my time in Vicksburg. After passing by the gallery, I knew instantly that this was it. I had a very positive buying experience. Lauchlin showed me all of my framing options to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately I was unable to meet the artist herself, as she was away on business. But at least I have something to remind me of my stay in beautiful Vicksburg! Highly recommend!

Strolling downtown after coffee I decided to take up on the offer of a tour by a friend of a friend that is the art director here. From the outside it looks very unassuming, inside is another matter all together. Pretty much all the work there is of the celebrated artist H C Porter, she owns the gallery and the only other work displayed is from Southern artists. Her exhibition on show at the moment focuses on images of people from hurricane Katrina, which is so engaging. The common theme are bright primary colours. In the middle of the gallery there is an installation piece that she has done of an actual slab of cement that got battered by Katrina. She also lives and works in the gallery which I got to see, New York apartments have got nothing on this space — seriously! She did the album cover of Church which had the following contributors Patti LaBelle, Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan, En Vogue, Dr. Maya Angelou who now are collectors of her work.
