Humphreys Bakery

Really disappointed in their famous belly bomb donut. I tried it about 10 years ago when they were in their old location and it was so amazing! Just tried one again and there was not as much chocolate on top and hardly any cream inside. Huge disappointment. Plus the first three times I went during my four day visit they were out of them which was also annoying. Had to get there at 7 am to get them today and after all that it wasn’t even good.

Fast and great service at Humphreys. Jumped in just after 6:00am after Ferry was cancelled with two sleepy and hungry kids and stumbled on this small gem. Breakfast sandwiches, donuts, coffee… all delicious and served with a smile.

My favorite here is the Gobbler sandwich. It is an amazing creation of turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing. It’s best on Humphrey’s oatmeal bread. Try a chocolate éclair or a chocolate cookie for dessert.

these people need to go to a city and see the portion sizes of normal sandwiches. the cuban sandwich was a joke. its everything sandwiches are not about. i will never pay 10 dollars for a sandwich here again. the most unhooked up sandwich ever.

GET THE GOBBLER! oven roasted turkey (not deli meat — way better), cranberry sauce, STUFFING… absolutely delicious.
i’m pretty sure any sandwich concoction they’ve come up with would be great. my family also tried the italian and californian turkey. so fresh and so delicious.

I recently grabbed some choc chip cookies here thinking if you don’t get these right everything else must be bad. These are the worst cookies I have ever had! I actually called them back to see if I had mistakenly grabbed some vegan cookies by mistake — but no. How can a bakery that has been around so long screw up the easiest cookies to make?

Terrific to-​go sandwich shop (no seating there). While in Martha’s Vineyard for the weekend we got sandwiches here to take for the beach it was convenient because despite being in traffic-​congested downtown they had a little parking lot so parking was not a problem. They make all their own bread and the $ 9 tomato mozzarella pesto sandwich was delicious and a generous portion! Definitely a great sandwich shop!

Our friends who visit MV frequently recommended Humphreys for good sandwiches and they were right. We stopped here for a late lunch (2pm) just before heading to catch our ferry back to the mainland. We had the Cubano, an Italian hero, melted ham and cheese on sour dough and the Californian, the latter which contained real turkey breast, avocado, chipotle mayo, lettuce and tomato. You can choose any of their delicious homemade breads. For the Californian, we had it on oatmeal bread — thick, chewy and slightly sweet soft bread. We all loved our sandwiches. Not a lot of seating — two tables seating a total of about ten. One suggestion — please post prices on your menu board and for your baked goods. Only a couple of items on the menu board had prices. Cost for the Californian sandwich, the melted ham & cheese sandwich ($ 6.95) and 2 bottles of lemonade was $ 21.50. We were too full to try any of the baked goods so we’ll be back, next year!

I LOVE HUMPHREY’S! Blueberry pie to die for and the most melt in your mouth, fantastically delicious doughnuts!!! It’s the most wonderful bakery and everything is so fresh and so darn good!

Very good sandwiches that are served on very thick fresh bread. The donuts are made by Dippin Donuts (I believe) and are okay, but not up to the level of what’s available at Back Door Donuts in Oak Bluffs. Their other baked goods (cookies, muffins and the like) are quite good.
They have a couple of tables, but it’s pretty much a to-​go place.

Humphrey’s is a lunchtime staple when I’m visiting MV. Pack up the cooler with the huge sandwiches that easily feed two people and come delish cupcakes and you’re on your way to a lovely beach lunch. I particularly recommend the Californian sandwich, but I’ve never had anything from Humphrey’s that I wouldn’t gladly eat again. Just remember to bring cash — standard island mantra, credit cards are not accepted.

I miss the old Humphrey’s in West Tisbury, but this strip-​mall location (and a photo of the old place, complete with a sign trumpeting S.S. Pierce products) carries with it the Vineyard as it was in the happy decades before celebs, Pilates, Hummers, and cleanse diets. If you want people-​watching with real islanders, stop here and stay awhile.
The coffee is fantastic, and, just like Dunkie’s on the mainland, they apply the cream and sugar behind the counter and with a heavy hand. The Gobbler, their signature sandwich, is just like the day after Thanksgiving, only better. The Cubano is pretty good; the pesto and and mozzarella less successful. Skip the salads. The old-​fashioned is my favorite donut, but should only be consumed early; otherwise, it’s a lead-​bomb.
Portions are generous (a half-​sandwich usually suffices for lunch) and prices amazingly reasonable. No wonder islanders love it here.

The Gobbler is the greatest invention in the history of mankind and no one does it better than Humphrey’s.

Best place for sandwiches on the island, hands down. Plus, I always try to get there in time for the delicious donuts, but I never seem to make it. For a very over-​priced island, this place is incredibly reasonable and incredibly delicious.

Alas, I can’t eat most of the treats served here any more but believe me I have dropped a major part of my weekly paycheck at Humphrey’s over the years. I never regretted a single ½ inch thick slab of turkey in their Thanksgiving sandwich (on oatmeal bread) or the most amazing Cuban north of Cuba. And then the donuts… The Belly Bombs were my favorites. Oh, and the cookies. Too delicious. You can smell those cookies as you drive up.
When my diet changed (no more meat and cheese and hardly any sugar) and I was forced to give up Humphrey’s, I went into mourning for a while. My car kept automatically turning into the parking lot, so I had to wrestle with the steering wheel.
They do have a veggie sandwich, but I don’t think I’d be able to resist a Cuban if I walked in, so I just stay away. I’d try say the words, «Tree Hugger,» but it would come out «Cuban,» I just know it.
A trip to the island has to include a visit to Humphrey’s. Bring an appetite. You will not see sandwiches of this size that are so delicious in very many places.

The jelly donuts at Humphrey’s are one of the things I look forward to the most when I go to MV!!! I have to admit that I’ve never tried any of the sandwiches, but it’s become a tradition to go pick up a box of blueberry or raspberry jelly donuts and a few cartons of milk a few mornings a week.
Try these and you won’t be disappointed!

Humphrey’s makes some good beach eats. Its where we usually stop right before hitting the sand, and rocks (ouch) and water.
I usually go for the Mozzarella and Pesto with Chicken. You don’t have to go far to please me with those ingredients. My girlfriend loves the Gobbler. She saves most of her daily calorie intake for it. We’ve also tried the Italian and have been pretty pleased across the board.
Aretha (who I feel like I am review stalking) is right, it doesn’t quite have the ambiance down pat but, sometimes I see things from my belly. My belly likes Humphrey’s.

I had the opportunity to try this Humphrey’s location recently. I am only familiar with the original Humphreys in west tisbury (what was it actually called — island food shop? something like that)…
I don’t think the two compare too well. There was something about that old building, and being able to peek at the kitchen out back… the creeky, warped wooden floors. It was sort of an up-​island oasis.
I’m sorry to report that this new, more sleek Humphreys lacks the character of the original.
The baked goods look and smell the same as they used to — but the sandwiches. Hm… Something’s a bit off with the oatmeal bread. I had a gobbler sandwich — it was simply a big mess. And there was no love in the stuffing! Throw some onions, some herbs in that!
It’s basically a big bread bomb.
New Humphreys — fix your gobbler! Thinner slices of oatmeal bread. Add some local island art like the old WT place used to.
I’ll be back again though, to try the cuban. Hopefully that one has stayed true to form.

This is the place for sandwiches to take to the beach. They were located in North Tisbury for a long time but opened a year round location in Vineyard Haven in August 2005. This is a family owned and operated bakery which opened its doors back in 1952.
The new location has a similar feel with the green paint job on the counter and walls. The menu is basically the same too and that’s really what matters.
The CUBAN SANDWICH is something I crave when I’m away from the Vineyard. I always ask for extra pickles though. Occasionally I’ll deviate my order and get the MOZZARELLA AND BASIL SANDWICH which is just as good but my personal 2^nd favorite to the cuban.
If you stop by there in the morning, get one of their BELLY BOMBS or if that’s too much try a chocolate cake donut or a glazed raised donut. Their pies are very tasty too… but just a note, the filled croissants are not made in house… they’re tasty but they’re Sysco. :)
You’re bound to run into all sorts of locals and hear all sorts of gossip. I went to the new location in the Fall of 2005 and heard all about the new contructions going up on the island.
If you haven’t heard about Humphreys by word of mouth, it’s easy to miss. It’s not near any of the ferries, so get on the island and ask about it… It’s now on a main road so getting there shouldn’t be hard.
