History
Established in 2009.
The 1993 closing of a United States Army post used for decades to eavesdrop on military and diplomatic communications has become the unlikely catalyst for a burst of new development, just west of Washington, DC.
In 1943, according to an Army history of the post, a soldier working in the barn copied decoded radio messages from the Japanese ambassador to Berlin to his superiors in Tokyo that gave a detailed description of the German Atlantic Wall defenses at Normandy and Calais. Because the Japanese diplomatic code had been broken, the intercept provided Allied planners with details needed to overcome German defenses.
Today, Vint Hill is one of a Washington DC region’s premier mixed use office parks. Vint Hill Craft Winery will frame the cultural center of the evolving Vint Hill community.
Meet the Manager
Ashton L.
Manager
Ashton Lough began as a home winemaker and beer brewer while training at the University of Georgia in biochemistry and molecular biology. While doing research at the University of Georgia he began investigating the potential for becoming a commercial winemaker. He discovered that this was his passion and calling. Pearmund Cellars hired Ashton as their winemaker in July of 2012 and he soon became the winemaker at Vint Hill Craft Winery and the Winery at Bull Run.
The 2012 vintage was his first commercial vintage and was soon greeted with several awards and acknowledgements and a number of medals. He also teaches home winemaking classes and commercial winemaking classes at Vint Hill Craft Winery. These classes are offered from late January through early May.
