Flour Child Bakery

Friendly greetings when you walk in and awesome bakery. Got the lemon bar, which was sweet and tart with a good balance along with the cookie crust at the bottom. Also, got the chocolate covered strawberries which tasted fresh, crisp and the chocolate just added a good enough sweetness to the dessert. Lastly, got the home made Carmel sauce which is very smooth and not overwhelming sweet, but great to add to ice cream, pies or just eating it off a spoon.

I bought three mini pies yesterday. The pecan was wonderful, the apple and the pumpkin were just ok. The crust was light and flaky. I would try it again.

I like the bakery items. I’d classify them as overpriced but our girls love the cookies and cake pops and we were regular customers. Until today. My story:
For Halloween 2013 and 2014, my wife bought mummy cake pops from their shelf for my daughter to take to school for her birthday. They were such a hit that five days ago my wife attempted to order 60 more mummy cake pops for the same daughter’s birthday party. The owner somewhat rudely told my wife that her bakery had never made mummy cake pops. Thankfully one of the employees pulled up the recipe from last year, though the owner still maintained that mummy cake pops had never been made at Flour Child. Argumentative, but the point was to get cake pops and my wife paid her in advance for the treats as well as $ 10ish of additional goodies for a total of about $ 115.
Today I picked up the cake pops and asked if the bill had been paid (busy birthday; forgot to ask my wife if I owed the bakery). The FC employee told me that my wife had paid for them. I took the cake pops and bought another $ 14 of treats (I can’t get out of a bakery without buying myself something, and then I can’t leave my daughters out…). As I was loading my sugary swag in my car, the FC employee came outside and said there was a $ 12 outstanding balance on the cake pops. OK, I told her, and went back inside where I handed her my debit card. She handed it back, told me to disregard because my wife had in fact paid the whole amount due. I thanked her and went home.
As I’m corralling girls and dogs prior to the birthday party, I missed a phone call from FC Bakery and called them back. The owner had called to tell me that we in fact owed her $ 12 and that her staff had called 4 – 5 days ago and talked to my wife. Frustrated that she was now trying to convince me that I should pay her additionally for a product that we (my wife and I) had priced with them THREE TIMES, I drew the line by telling her that under no circumstances was I going to pay her another dime. I checked my call history back through the time of the original order and this bakery did not call my house or my wife’s cell.
On the phone, the owner was clearly more concerned in proving to me that she was correct that «two simple mistakes» by her staff meant that I should pay her further. They will not see another cent from my family. We would have paid her the $ 12 on three separate occasions in this transaction, but when she calls to convince me that her mistakes are my problem (with a difficult to understand story about calling us) I draw a hard line. I spent $ 130 in her bakery on this transaction and hundreds over the years. FC lost a repeat customer over $ 12. I see other Unilocalers have used the word «rude» here as well.
There is another bakery in the adjacent office park called Gateaux. Their treats are better, more interesting than Flour Child’s cupcakes and cookies and the cakes are pretty amazing.
TL;DR – Flour Child misquoted the price of cake pops three times (10% low), then called the customer at home inaccurately claiming to have made arrangements for a higher price. Rude and focused on winning the argument over treating the customer fairly. Recommend Gateaux.

My second visit to this lovely bakery. We were greeted with a hearty hello, and a beautiful huge smile. We bought an assortment of cake pops, cup cakes and small pies. All were fresh and delicious. I truly appreciate the atmosphere of this bakery. Thank you for a lovely experience. I do not live close by, wish I did, but that makes coming here such a lovey treat.

My coworker has been jonesing for some rocky road cupcakes and when she saw it was one of today’s flavors she left work to scoop us up some. She was kind enough to bring me a death by chocolate and strawberry lemonade. She bought all 9 of the rocky roads for herself and one for my boss who also has the almond cake. The DBC was super rich. I found the cake to be a teensy bit dry for my liking but the flavor was good and the frosting for ganache made up for it. I sampled half the DBC and brought the other half home to my husband. While it didn’t travel well (I drive my Jeep like I stole her) but he still found it delectable. The aroma alone on my strawberry lemonade was enough to draw me in. It was super yummy. I tasted both the lemonade in the cake and the strawberry in the frosting. I didn’t taste the rocky road (not a preferred flavor for me) but our boss let me sample her almond cake frosting and that was omg yummy! I’ll have to make a trip over there myself next time I’m out that way.

Went yesterday picked up 6 cupcakes, 2 red velvet cake pops, 1 mini salted carmel mini apple pie, and the best mini cherry pie I’ve ever had. I’m officially addicted to that cherry pie. Those red velvet cake pops were very moist inside. Not dry like most place. The lady was very nice. I can’t wait to go back for another cherry pie!

I will say this: they have a ton of great flavors and it is obviously an establishment with talented bakers. The number on this review is not based on their ability to bake or create beautiful cakes and such. This number is based off of the curt and borderline rude service we received during our cake testing.
My fiancé and I are getting married in Virginia Beach next year. We spent an entire day reaching out to vendors and such since it is over a three hour drive to get there for us.
Our appointment was originally 430 but we called and asked if it would be an issue to come in earlier. They allowed us to come in at 4.
When we went in, everything was clean and bright with their table setup for a taste testing — six cupcakes in the three flavors we chose as well as fillings and frostings.
I brought my mother, my coordinator, and my fiancé with me to the appointment. When the woman, who I presume is the owner, came out, she told us to see what we liked and she would be back out later. This was after she introduced herself to me, and congratulated me, but blatantly ignored my fiancé, my mother, and my coordinator. My fiancé immediately felt awkward and unwelcome.
Unfortunately thay introduction left such a sour taste in our mouths that we did a the taste test and immediately decided this was not where we were going to purchase our wedding cake. We waited for her to return and it took approximately 45 minutes fornher to come back out. She still only addressed me and became friendly with my mother before we departed. It was very disconcerting.
My fiancé and I are huge proponents of great customer service — it goes a long way with us since we have been on both sides. And unfortunately this did not work out for us.

This place is awesome. I have only had their cupcakes and cake pops. The cake pops are absolutely delicious and my favorite cake pop is amazing! I’m not going to tell you which one is my favorite because they are all good so give them a try. I wish the red velvet cake pops had white shells instead of the milk chocolate. I usually avoid them because I don’t want the milk chocolate on those. Try them out!

So yummy! Traditional American bakery. The owner was sweet and engaging. Everything looks super tasty. We tried a frosted cookie, ($ 1.59) which was still moist and good on day 2. And I also ordered a chocolate chip cookie bar swirled with cheese cake ($ 3.39). That was delicious! I wanted a strawberry rhubarb pie but her pies were over priced at $ 20 each, which I thought was expensive, even her apple pie was that much so for me to spend that money on a pie I need to be drunk, and it was ten am:) otherwise we will go back again for cupcakes and I will update then. She also makes wedding cakes.

I bought a variety of treats from this place recently to try to attempt to avoid driving 45 minutes to my favorite bakery by finding a place closer.
First, I cannot stress this enough — they are overpriced at $ 3.70 for a cupcake.
The cake pops were very very raw in the middle. It was literally refrigerated raw batter in the middle of them, and lucky me, I bought a bunch at $ 1.70 each I had to throw out.
I did enjoy the mini Key Lime Pies ($ 3.60 each) and the Wedding Cookies ($ 4.50 a bag of about 10 small cookies) but not sure if they alone are tasty enough to bring me back.
They have two cases to choose from, but the choices were limited. It was easy to get to and I didn’t have to wait at all to buy and go.

This is my number one choice for cakes, cookies, and pies. Service is always great and they have a wide selection everyday of the week. I always know I’m going to get something I like here.

A good friend of mine and I had been looking for place in the area that had key lime pie. Not only did they have minis but you can get a whole pie as well! Their key lime pie hit the spot! Tart like expected yet creamy like a cheesecake. I also bought their red velvet whoopie pies but wasn’t fond of the icing center. I think it’s because I was expecting cream cheese icing which is what is paired traditionally with red velvet. Just too sweet for my liking. Took home some carrot cake as well and that was goooood. The icing wasn’t overly sweet and the cake was moist.
My friend bought the key lime pie mini, chocolate chip cookie dough bar & doggie treats. He was a fan of it all and so was his dog.
This place is definitely a gem in the area. I’ll be back for sure. Soooooooo much selection how could you not?!

Well, I can say this, I didn’t experience any rudeness whatsoever from the nice lady that served me. She was very pleasant to speak to and very knowledgeable about the product.
All I wanted was some chocolate cookies. I ordered what was 2 cookies in a clear plastic bag at an expensive $ 2.99 PER BAG!!! I can best describe the size by stacking two Chips Ahoy cookies on top of each other to get the height right, but about the same circumference. These have got to be the best cookies ever!
5 DAYS LATER (in my Spongebob announcer voice), I have 1−½ of the cookies left! That cookie was pretty bad. I am one that will choke down food because I don’t like to spend my hard earned money on food just to waste it. So I’m going to finish those cookies. I’m just waiting until I want a midnight snack. If I take a small piece off and eat it, it will detour me from eating anything else that late at night.
I gave it 3 stars only because of the customer service and because there is some other pastries I would like to try. I want to like them, so I will give it another shot. But it won’t be for those cookies! Believe THAT!

I got a cupcake and it wasn’t fully baked. I also got some dog treats for my little fur baby’s and it gave them diarrhea

I like this local petite sweet shop. Lots of mom’s and daughter’s love.
Small sweets around $ 1.7 and modicum size $ 3.7. You can order your own special cakes too!
It’s really tough to choose one here…

I ordered my daughter’s first birthday cake from flour child and they exceeded expectations. The cake tasted just as good as it looked. Thank you so much!

Went in again today for the coconut macarons! Very good me and my kids get them as a little treat now and then. :)
Service was great.

We’ve gotten cupcakes here a few times, and all were pretty decent. The flavors could be more bold, and the frosting a little less sugary, but my kids enjoy them.
They have a huge variety of goods from cakes, cake pops, cookies, pies, and cupcakes.

I am a huge bakery addict. I have tried 4 different ones around Hampton Roads already. I keep coming back to this one. I do wish they had a larger selection, but I have truly enjoyed almost everything I have tried there. My kids LOVE their cake pops (which they do have a nice variety of), I love their scones and chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake bar, my dog LOVES their homemade dog biscuits, and my husband loves their mini key lime pies and cheesecakes. We have tried many of their cupcakes and they are always yummy. The service is average and the place is small. But, the food just keeps bringing me back!

Today October 2^nd is Flour Child Bakery’s 3^rd birthday at their new location in Virginia Beach. Over the last few years our family has enjoyed this small bakery time and time again. Location has been very good for them in the Thoroughgood/​Church Point neighborhoods of Bayside. Parking can at times may be an issue, but today was not. We have been very happy with the quality produced from Flour Child and if a downside exist it is the fact you pay a pretty penny for that goodness.
The exterior area of the building is well kept up and clean without debris on the sidewalk. The area includes other stores and on the same side is an alteration shop and the new restaurant Salt.
A few customers were in line when I walked in. They offer two cases full of goods. A few tables for those that want to eat inside is an option, but for the most part this is a carry-​out place. On this day the cases were full of many of the items I like, but ultimately I had my heart set on one of their specialties, Fresh Apple Cake. You purchase this by the slice and if you ever want a whole cake an advanced order MUST be made. Keep in mind this is a small batch bakery and everything is fresh and made to order. If you want to call the day of to get a cake you will probably be disappointed.
The service at the counter was cordial, nothing over the top. If there is one complaint I have is that the women working the cash register never seem to be excited about serving customers in the store. They always seem anxious to get back in the kitchen to make all those wonderful products. I asked for a Fresh Apple Cake warmed up with whip topping for here. A few minutes later that is exactly what I received and it smelled awesome. But it’s the taste of this scrumptious cake that has me coming back. The eating area and store was clean as I have come to expect.
This small bakery is much more than just an apple cake. They offer cookies, puddings, gluten free products, cake pops and this year sandwiches. A big part of their business is wedding cakes and special event cakes such as birthdays. You will also find them at various Farmer Markets around town, most notably in East Beach, Norfolk.
After reading a few of the very poor reviews I would discount both of them. This is a solid local bakery that puts a lot of effort into providing a quality product to their customers every day. The passion shows in the product and I think if you taste their offering you too will find this a great place to come for your baked goods. Just make sure you call ahead people.
