History

Established in 1986.

Previously the Maui Prince Court, the Molokini Bar & Grille has been providing Maui with fresh island dining for over 25 years, with premier views of nearby Molokini Islet, neighbouring islands and South Maui’s spectacular sunsets.

Manager

Michael Morris previous experience includes managerial roles in some of Maui’s premier restaurants. Now a Food & Beverage Manager of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort, Michael has been managing the Molokini Bar & Grille for over 3 years and has worked with the resort’s culinary and food & beverage team to revamp the entire restaurant experience.

We went for the Friday Seafood buffet. We were spoiled by the view from our room at this resort, so the sunsets weren’t as impressive for us, which seems like a major draw for some. Cocktails here were great. The buffet just really didn’t have anything I loved or that made me want to go back for more. The crab legs were really salty, so I didn’t eat much of the food I was most looking forward to eating. Price was $ 55 pp, but if you have breakfast downstairs they give you a 15% discount for the restaurant. Overall-wouldn’t go back for the buffet, but might try the regular menu if we were staying at the resort again.

The dining experience at Molokini Bar and Grill was pretty good. My husband and I were guests at the Makena resort and ate at the restaurant several times during our stay. I will say that the service was excellent. Very friendly staff, and the views are beautiful. We enjoyed the live acoustic music as well. The food was satisfactory to good, but we felt that for the quality, it was a bit too expensive. The times that we had room service the food wasn’t as flavorful or good as when we dined at the restaurant.

If you love seafood buffets, the Friday night seafood buffet is fantastic. I started off with a variety of fresh poke, sushi, crab and seared ahi tuna. My favorite was the Ahi Poke and the Shrimp Poke. I then moved onto the steamed Mahi Mahi, dumplings and prime rib. I managed to save room for the dessert bar, I loved the chocolate macadamia nut tart and the chocolate dipped strawberries.

This review is for their Lobster Fest they have every Tuesday and Thursday. The service was friendly but the food was just OK as well as the drinks. We got the 3 course lobster dinner which was a Caesar salad, a lobster tail and filet and a crème brulee sampler. I also ordered the lobster bisque which was yummy but nothing out of this world. The filets were the best part of the meal even though we ordered them medium rare and they came out slightly over cooked. The lobster was a total disappointment. I’ve had better at red lobster which is sad to say. If you call it lobster fest the lobster should be the item that is the stand out of the meal. I don’t think I will be going out of my way to eat dinner here again. I might go for happy hour. The menu looks pretty good for that and I won’t be paying an arm and a leg. Hopefully we will have better luck next time.

We also came here for happy hour, nothing fancy but nice option with relaxing music.
Dinner was amazing here we had the romantic package 3 course meal. Best filet we’ve ever had!

We were given resort credit and decided to blow it here.
The food here isn’t too bad. The view is nice. If you come here for dinner you can get a view of the sunset. Even have it right in your face where you need sunglasses to eat your dinner.
For appetizer, we ordered the prusciutto wrapped scallops. They were ok. The scallop wasn’t seared enough and it was soggy like a sponge when we got it. It looked sad and all brown. It sat on top of a polenta and a broth with small morel mushrooms. The broth was better than the dish. It had earthy, umami, and salty notes.
We both ordered fish. I had the encrusted mahi mahi. It was not bad. It was a little over. It could have been seasoned. It was well presented and looked beautiful on top of quinoa. The quinoa was darker; possibly because it was cooked in a broth or wine. The fish was firm as mahi mahi should be. The crust wasn’t much of a crust.
Our waitress was ok. She had a slight Russian accent and was somewhat helpful. She lacked knowledge about food. She had a hard time explaining cous cous to us.
I’m happier about this meal because i didn’t pay for it. We had $ 150 of resort credit and blew about 120 of it here. Not the best meal on the island for the price.

Best brunch buffet on Maui! All the food was of great quality– everything was ono! And there was all kines of food: the usual breakfast fare as well as prime rib, poke and sushi station with crab legs as well as all kine ono desserts! The service was good– the waiter was always there ready to refill our coffee/​water and buss our dirty plates. Tourists and kamaāina alike will enjoy this brunch destination. There is also a beautiful ocean view from the restaurant where you can see Molokini and Kahoolawe on a clear day.

We were starving and decided to try it out. My husband had the sashimi and it was nothing spectacular. I had the seafood bouillabaisse and it was not flavorful. Our friend ordered the pasta dish and it was also not flavorful. Our other friend ordered the Mahi Mahi and it was meh.
Thus far, this was the worst meal we all had while in Hawaii.
So disappointed.

Definitely enjoyed the luxe-​feeling bar and view of, yep, Molokini. Happy Hour went until 6:30, so we had a couple drinks and made the last one stretch for the 7pm sunset. These were not watered down resort drinks but well-​made cocktails, including the mai tai, piña colada, and 57 Chevy. We came post-​beach and felt pretty underdressed in our tank tops (the only tanks there, though they said ‘it’s Maui, we’re cool’), so I’d maybe suggest stepping up your resort wear before you swing by.

Stayed at Makena for a week and had dinner here a few times and ordered room service as well. Also did the sushi night thing.
Overall the place is good. If your tired after an active day, this place is great. However, if meals are part of your vacation experience, don’t make a habit of this place. Caesar salad was quite good, steak was lacking flavor and is not local. To that point I was also informed that most of their fish was not local. This was disappointing. Cheeseburger was good, as were the fish tacos. Sushi was the best part — food was absolutely knock out. Drinks and deserts were also the best part of the experience.

Um, I expect better from this place.
Drinks: 3– The ‘piña-​rosemary’ drink I had was pretty good… the mai tai, not so much.
Lobster bisque: 4.2 — this could be closer to 5, because it was seriously outstanding, but, I’ve had Emeril’s… and after eaten Emeril’s lobster bisque I actually did lick tbe bowl, no matter how tactless that may sound… it was that serious. This stuff is pretty dang serious too. could use a little more lobster, and tenper a little lighter.
Shrimp Tempura: 2.5 — seriously. Ib4e had better at Genki Sushi for half the price.
Garlic mash: 2– kinda wondering if they’re from box potatoes… not good at all… don’t even taste the garlic either.
Service: 4.5 — very friendly & warm staff
Music: 4 — the first guy, really not that great, the second guy– fantastic.
I will try the «by the pool» calzones/​bbq area tomorrow, perhaps, to lower my expextations.

We showed up 64 minutes before closing, and almost weren’t approached with time enough to placement order before last call. We finally placed our orders for drinks, and after an interminable wait, my $ 13 Blue Hawaiian and my better half’s $ 13 Mai Tai arrived. We expected that for the cost of a respectable dinner in our native Portland, Oregon, we’d be served at least a few pieces of fruit along with our rum and mixer concoctions. Pineapple chunk and maraschino cherry. The drinks were tasty, but the service, ambience and prices were lousy. One star, Molokini.

Father’s Day brunch 2013 was awesome! The restaurant wasn’t overly-​crowded which was a huge plus.
FOOD:
Omelette station — Yay! This was sorely missed at Mother’s Day Brunch while eating at Gannon’s Wailea.
Snow crab legs — Delish! Served cold but with room temperature sweet & salty butter that oddly never caked up. That was weird!
Lobster chowder — As yummy as it sounds. Awesome flavor, thick & creamy.
Portuguese sausage & bacon — Not cooked to my liking. Both were lightly fried with no hint of a flavorful crust.
Unfortunately no hash browns. There was a whole spread of meats and sushi but I didn’t go that route.
SERVICE:
Very friendly, professional and the champagne kept flowing!
OVERALL:
Nice and relaxing time, great food and not crawling with tourists.
