Helllz Yeah! Load me up! True southern cooking. Now the dilemma of what to choose. Well, for me it’s a real no brainer they offered two of my southern favs. Fried okra and chicken livers. Yes, I openly admit, I greatly enjoy both of those items. The food was delivered to the table piping hot, chicken livers cooked to perfection — just the right amount of breading and extremely moist. Not overdone, which tends to happen so often. The fried okra … heavenly! The plates are piled high and it’s soo, soo, good, but don’t fill up. There’s pie to sample and lots of options. Wow, this is where it’s at. One point deducted for no fresh brewed sweet tea. It’s a southern staple!

We rolled in here for a late lunch last Friday after E. Snow put this joint on the map. This place is something you’d see on «Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives». Living in WF, I have driven past this place a hundred times but never thought to go inside. Due to the name I just thought this was a dessert place and never imagined they had lunch/dinner entrée items. When you enter the restaurant you are greeted by the counter which houses all pre-prepared food items such as veggie sides, ribs, and fried chicken. The counter also houses some assorted desserts and a pie case. We read over the menu and tried to familiarize ourselves with what was available and what our options were. I selected the ribs with macaroni salad, but was told that the macaroni salad was not available. Another member of our party ordered another side which was also not available, so it narrowed down our selections a little easier. You order your food and then find your seat while things are prepared. The platters were quickly served and all items were hot and fresh. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and had great flavor. The green beans I ended up with were deliciously overcooked, like good southern beans should be, and I savored every bite. After lunch we decided we had to have some pie and some of the most amazing banana pudding that was sitting in the cold case. While the pie was the namesake of the restaurant and the feature of many a news article that line the walls, the banana pudding was the star of our table. The pudding was by far the best thing we ordered and we all loved every last morsel! Creamy pudding, crunchy vanilla wafers, fresh bananas, and a meringue topping — need I say more? Hours are limited and some days they are closed, but you can get your food to go and they do offer some delivery. My only issue with this place was that the women’s restroom door does not fully close, so making a pit stop might be a little awkward since the restroom is right by the cash register.

I never will get over Johnson’s Farmers Market going away but I have finally found a suitable replacement. If you want some good home cooking this is the place to be! Admittedly it is not a buffet like Johnson’s was but the food is just as good in most respects. I will also admit I have driven past this place many times but never considered entering because it looked like a total hole in the wall dive(but as we know these are often the best places). After reading the reviews I put on my big boy pants and decided to give it a try. They were out of the Poor Boyz which made my decision easier. I settled on the Fried Chicken(dark meat) with a side of fried okra and turnip greens. The chicken was perfectly fried and very moist and the okra was divine. The only disappointment was the greens. They were pretty bland even after dumping a good amount of vinegar on them. Of course I couldn’t leave without trying dessert. Not being able to decide I got a slice of pecan pie and some banana pudding. Both were very good. The owners are very friendly and take time to speak with anybody who is interested in a chat. I will definitely be back and highly recommend this place to anybody. Don’t be put off by the appearance, it is a true gem. Just be prepare for some odd hours. There was a sign posted on the door that said new hours(not sure how recent) are 11am — 7pm Monday — Friday. Saturday and Sunday by appointment only.
