History

Established in 2013.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu was founded by Eddie Bravo in 2003 after his upset victory over Royler Gracie in the ADCC Worlds.

10th Planet Walnut Creek was founded in 2013 by Alex Canders after training in the 10th Planet System under Denny Prokopos.

Alex is a life long martial artist whose primary goal is to share that love with others. He has black belts in several styles but most recently was promoted to the rank of brown belt in 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu.

Alex’s goal for 10th Planet Walnut Creek is to provide a gym where he would love to train, with technical teaching and a friendly environment.

Sensei Alex is great with kids and extremely passionate about the art. He blends fun with hard work and discipline in a way that’s quite unique. His patience with new kids is unbelievable.

I came in with ZERO martial arts experience, but a friend from a Gi academy in San Diego convinced me to do BJJ, and recommended the no-​gi 10th planet system. 10th planet has a 2 week cycle that teaches you the basic skeleton of modern brazilian jiu jitsu. The more you do it, the more you become comfortable with the moves, the more flexible you get, and the more you have fun.
Alex is a great trainer, and really spends a full hour going over the techniques for that lesson.
I’ve noticed tremendous improvement in myself, both physically and mentally, and I can’t wait to continue to improve so I can compete one day.
If you were hesitant like me when first starting, that’s more than ok, but you will learn to love bjj. It’s awesome.

I currently train here– I’ve trained at academies big and small on both coasts, and this place is one of the best and continually getting better. Alex is a fantastic instructor; especially being that he tests his technique frequently by competing. We have a good mix of skill levels and he’s able to teach beginners and advanced students with equal ease. This is a great place to train– highly recommended.

This is a new Jiu Jitsu academy opened by Alex Canders, one of Denny Prokopos’ top competitors. Alex is a life-​long martial artist who brought to the sport of BJJ all of the ingredients necessary to excel in the competition game: discipline, the ability to learn quickly and most importantly, humility.
Rarely have I seen someone excel so quickly. Canders is an amazingly hard worker in possession of a great work ethic. Not only has he performed great in tournaments but he’s also become an incredibly detailed instructor having really acquired the well-​rounded details needed to build an technical Jiu Jitsu game.
I highly recommend training under Alex if you’re looking to learn some of the most cutting-​edge no-​gi BJJ.
