Recom Computers

Our desktop crashed last week, and we were in a dilemma on what our options were. I Unilocaled all the nearby computer fixers and came upon Recom. I was initially hesitant about going to someone’s house, but was reassured with all the Unilocal reviews. Paul’s workshop was very impressive. He clearly and candidly explained all of my options. I had no reservations leaving my computer with him.
Paul was able to diagnose and repair our computer. The parts and repair cost were very reasonable and I picked up the computer the next day. The computer runs faster than before and we are thoroughly satisfied with Paul’s business.

I used Paul about 4 years ago to help us with a Mac laptop that had juice spilled all over it. He was able to recover all of our data for us, was quick and professional so when my work laptop crashed on me today, I knew who to call. Although I admit, I thought I’d call Dell since the laptop is under warranty, but after an hour on the phone with customer service, I knew I needed Paul’s help. I called him at 4:00 pm with a computer that wouldn’t start up because of a corrupted operating system, he told me to bring it over. He walked me through everything that he would do, got me an estimate, and said he’d have it by noon tomorrow. Instead, I got a call from Paul that my computer was ready for pick up at 7:30 pm tonight! Same day service — fantastic! He came through for me again and in a big way — so I’ll be back at work tomorrow without skipping a beat! He knows what he’s doing, is fast, professional, and fairly priced! I would highly recommend him!

I was waiting in line at Best Buy to talk to the Geek Squad about my frozen laptop. Lucky for me I had my iPhone and Unilocal app handy. While in line I checked out Paul’s reviews and I called him. He said come on over. I left the line and in 5 minutes I had a real computer expert looking at my machine. I drove home and while I pulled into the driveway Paul called me and told me my computer was fixed. I was stunned. I thought i needed a new hard drive.
When I picked up my computer he wouldn’t take any money, telling me it only took him a couple of minutes.
Bottom line: if you want a line, go to geek squad. If you want results from a highly knowledgeable, honest computer expert, give Paul a try.

I’ve taken my laptop to him twice. The first time my laptop just wouldn’t download anything, and I didn’t know what was wrong, but he fixed it. The second time my screen was broken, and he fixed it when the people at best buy told me to buy a new computer. I will always call Paul first. He knows what he’s doing, he’s professional, and he’s fair. And he doesn’t make you feel like an idiot.

Paul helped me out when I needed a replacement piece for my laptop power cable. He was also conveniently located to my home, which was even nicer. Good buying experience, and I recommend his services.

Paul knows what he is doing, and seems to have been doing it for many years. He even reduced the bootup time for my new hard drive by a significant amount. I would highly recommend him.

Paul of Recom Computers has always done a fantastic job in supporting our computer needs. He is very knowledgeable, quick and reasonably priced. Today he saved a bad external hard drive that we had years of family photos stored on it. We had been told it was a lost cause to even try removing the information. I highly recommend him!

First, I have to be honest, even with the thought of upsetting Paul. I, like a couple of those with negative reviews, found him a bit pugnacious. That’s the perfect word. Somewhat condescending as far as I was concerned. I did not represent a high-​paying client, that’s for sure since I contacted him several months ago and then a few weeks ago to purchase a used laptop. What he sold me, after I questioned their reputation, was an Acer that I am very happy with. My first DOS desktop, (my first computer was a KayPro, remember those :-)) one I was happy with back in the day, was a new Acer until it needed repairs & I discovered certain aspects of it, at least then, were proprietary. When I questioned him as to the laptop, admittedly no big money-​maker for him, Paul seemed to think their «rep» wasn’t worth long discussion & at fist this bothered me, he seemed to sidd-​step the question, however I did some more research & bought the laptop. Took it home & used it, plugging in the charger. Several days later the battery was down to 10% & the charger wouldn’t function unless I held it in just the right position. I phoned Paul, who I did find a bit abrasive in his strong assumption I had done something wrong, perhaps plugging the charger into the computer port in a way that damaged it. Because the charger tip moved around a bit I incorrectly assumed the port, a costly & time consuming repair, would have to be replaced. I really needed to use the computer. At first Paul said I’d have to wait a while, that it was fine when we tried it in his shop, etc. However he said if I made it fast I could drop it off. I admit I was very upset & began siding with the 2 reviewers who said he had no social skills & disdained those without his «savvy.» Ran the laptop over to him as quickly as I could, leaving for how long & at what expense I didn’t know. Not 10 minutes later he phoned, telling me it wasn’t the computer port but rather the charger’s female connection. To come right back. He gave me a new charger gratis at considerable expense to himself & I was on my way, my Acer functioning beautifully since he gave me the charger. I admit he surprised the hell out of me! Was a Good Guy after all. Perhaps one has to «learn» how to deal with him? I recommend Paul. He knows his stuff, but if you’re contradictory be prepared for an argument or, in my case at first, some attitude! But after all this, an Honest 5 Stars in my book. I’d definitely go back to him for either a purchase or repairs.

I’m glad to report, Paul is still capable of amazing me. My computer crashed after Microsoft had pushed through an update – I mean, won’t boot, looping through odd diagnostics that would then get stuck.
Typically, I lose my mind in these situations, but knowing I had Paul in Walnut Creek, I figured, «Damn, I’ve got to drive out to Walnut Creek in the heat.» But figuring how little of the computer worked, I was figuring it would cost me a bundle. Paul looks at the screen. «Hmm. That’s odd, blue screen. That’s typically a hardware problem.» He takes maybe 3 minutes to fish around inside, and he turns it on and the machine boots and is fine.
I clearly didn’t know where to start to fix this, and I bet I could have paid for a new motherboard and figured that was what was up. Paul hoovered out the inside, dusted everything, gave me a tutorial on how to back up the hard drive, a little random wisdom on buying computers, and I’m out the door in 30 minutes for $ 65.
Paul’s expertise is invaluable, but what may be even more valuable is knowing that he’s there. When my computer screws up, no matter how badly, I don’t have to panic (and I’m capable of panic with computers). It’s a very comforting feeling.

My 5+ year-​old desktop had a broken power-​on button and rather than having to order a new tower case, Paul found a great way to fix it that let me get back to using the computer right away. And since he fixed it so quickly, he used the remaining time (there is a one-​hour minimum charge) to «tune up» the computer to make it perform much faster!

Contacted Paul, after having been through serious issues with another computer repair company, in an effort to fix my desktop PC. He is honest, helpful, fair, quick service – provides a great experience in this complex world of computers. Sadly I have found other computer repair places to be the exact opposite. Paul was kind enough to help me and offered to provide any assistance needed in dealing with the ordeal I went through with another company.
I ended up buying a new desktop from Paul at half the price I was quoted elsewhere. Paul really has a kind heart and strong ethics, not to mention his expert knowledge of computers. Even though he is located a good distance from my home, I have found my go-​to place now. Lesson learned the time-​consuming, hard way (and you’ll read it on his website) do not spend money trying to fix a computer that’s more than 4 years old.

Paul is awesome. I called him on a Sunday at 2:00 expecting to get a voicemail. Paul answered took the call and told me he could see me immediately. I drove to Paul’s office where he worked his magic. He had my computer working within 30 minutes. Paul also gave me great advice and saved me money by explaining important needs for my computer. Paul’s website/​blog is filled with great advice. I would highly recommend Paul to everybody. I use my computer for work and it is critical to my business. Thanks Paul.

Talked to Paul and he was extremely ethical. Had a laptop that was broken and he was honest and flat out said it wasn’t worth spending the $ to fix it. that i’d be better off buying a new one. Appreciated his honesty. will return to him should a need arise.

The owner of Recom computers contacted me after reading my review in an attempt to clear things up. He agreed to refund my money. But before I had the chance to update my review, he made it clear that the condition of my refund was that I remove the «poor» review. Not only that, but he wanted me to sign a contract agreement, stating I would remove the review. Probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! Obviously I declined. My review is still up, and Recom Computers still has my money. Paul really lacks in the social skills required in dealing with people, does not have a general sense of customer service & poor overall communication skills. Would not recommend.

Apparently, I, and 10 other gamers who call him per week are complete idiots for building our own computers. Doesn’t matter how many successful builds I’ve had in the past, I’m an idiot for attempting to do something for myself. Well, according to Paul I am. Also I got scammed by every company I purchased from. MSI and Asus is «cheapo» and the real kicker, «there is no such thing as 120hz monitors.»
What a joke, for a professional, he sure conducts himself like a child. I’ve never been insulted more in one phone call in my entire life. How can he have 5 star reviews acting like this to people?
I have an issue with POSTing and he is going off about how bad my video card is? Really? And then my monitor?! Tell me, paul, how is that related when I already told you I took it out to check post status. Why do you have to insult me and my purchase decisions. Absolutely horrible customer service. You completely sidetracked from my issue, and just went off about whatever you wanted to complain about.
I asked if you could fix an issue, not complain about how stupid of a choice it was to buy so and so. In no situation should you ever just flat out call people names, that is basic elementary school manners.

I called Paul on a Sunday morning when our home computer died. Told me to come by at 11. Discussed options and decided to have him build me a new computer. By Monday afternoon it was completed and at a fair price. Thanks Paul!

My girlfriends three year old laptop needed to be repaired. We actively searched for a place to take it and ran into Paul’s business on Unilocal.He strongly suggested in his professional opinion to just backup the data. So we did.
Computers change every year he says and the money you invest into a broken laptop; is money for a new and faster one!
We were surprised by his response because he could’ve easily made money but instead he was honest and truthful.

An incredibly honest customer service experience. I’m certain that if I’d taken my computer to Fry’s or Best Buy, I’d have been charged a huge fee just to have the computer diagnosed and may have never seen it again for all I know.
Paul was extremely cordial, honest and forthcoming about all information. I feared a major problem with my laptop, and because I was lucky enough to go to someone who isn’t interested in taking advantage of people, I’m getting off easy with a simple part replacement.
I give my highest reccomendation — if you are having any computer issue, please go see Paul before you go anywhere else.

I have used Paul’s expert talents for all our family’s computing needs for over ten years. He has built new computers, upgraded computers, solved problems, helped with networks, allowed our son to build his own computer while he gently guided him in his shop and been a solid tech guru whenever we have a problem.
He can build powerful new systems and advise on economical or practical choices better than any of the major commercial lines. And he answers his phone or emails when you need him.
In case anyone wants to know, I found out from his blog, that Paul had about thirty very favorable reviews recently, and because he declined to pay a monthly advertising fee, they decided most of his reviews were bogus. Well, I can tell you that I personally knew some of the reviewers and they were not bogus at all, but just satisfied customers. As I am still, writing now on a great new Windows 7 machine that he built. I am a plumbing contractor, my name is Marc Brenner and Unilocal has some very suspect practices.
