History
Established in 1934.
In 1915, after a fire destroyed the Chinese section of nearby Walnut Grove, a committee of merchants lead by Lee Bing reached an agreement to establish a new town calling it Lockport, later known as Locke. The town was completed in 1920 becoming the only town in America built and operated solely by Chinese.
In 1934, Al Adami traveled up river from Ryde to establish Al’s Place and become the first non-Chinese business owner in town. The bar and steak house quickly became known as «Al the Wop’s.» Al’s unique business tactics included dressing down patrons by cutting off neckties, stirring drinks for the ladies with his fingers, and throwing money up to the ceiling. Al continued running the business until his death in 1961.
Today Locke stands as it did in 1920. Al the Wop’s continues on as a full bar and steak house. Al’s spirit lives through stories and photographs shared within the bar and around town. Come by and try your chances at getting a dollar up on the ceiling!
