McCrea Heating and Air Conditioning Services

I inherited McCrea when I purchased my house. When in the first couple of months we realized the HVAC ducts were not balanced and possibly leaking. We have at least 3 different crews come through suggest different things, including blaming the builder, insulator, and me — the owner for the HVAC issues. Needless to say, McCrea says there is nothing wrong and everything is to code — or the bare minimum.
They are not welcome in my home.

I would give NEGATIVE STARS… We have been customers for 18 years. I have paid for a service contract for 18 years. You have received the last $ from my family EVER. We have been without AC since last Wednesday. I service tech did not show up until 1pm on Saturday and told us that he did not have the part on the truck. The part was a universal belly packet ($ 15 online). He told he normally carried the part but would have to order it first thing Monday. We call McCrea Monday afternoon and were told that the part had not been order (wasn’t in the system). We were assured that the part would be ordered. Called back on Tuesday and Rachel our service manager told us the part had been ordered and that the service tech would be at our home as soon as the part came off the truck. She told me that she had confirmed that the part was on the truck and was in route. I took work off on Wednesday, July 15 because I did not know when the service tech would arrive. I spoke to Rachel at 10:45am and was assured that the part was on the way but that UPS had not arrived. I called again at 2:45pm and was told that the part was NOT on the truck and that it would now be delivered on Thursday. LIES, LIES, LIES…

OHHHHHH let me tell you! Outright crooks! They installed the unit in my home, which was less than 3 years old (probably the lowest bidder for the builder) when I had them come out for a routine inspection of the gas heater. The technician sprayed some kind of liquid on the three gas flames on the bottom of the heating unit when the heat came on. The flames started to move a little when the spray bottle was sprayed on them (duh) so the technician told me the «unit has a crack» and it was a serious issue and shut my unit down. This was one day before we were supposed to get a snowstorm. He told me that the whole unit was «unsafe» and had to be replaced, and it would be $ 10,000-$ 12,000. I got a second opinion the same day and was told by that company that nothing was wrong with my system, that they had never heard of someone diagnosing a crack without extensive checking with a mirror and/​or removing the unit, that the spray bottle was a rediculous and potentially dangerous gimmick, and that nothing was wrong with the unit.

ok so i usually don’t write reviews… but when i saw how many negative reviews the company had. i had to write one… It all began when i asked south riding community on fb to help me find a company that would have a serivce contract for both my homes. one of my neighbors told me about mccrea… so i called to set up 2 appointments for both of my town houses… mike came out to both of them took the time to check on everything and made sure that the systems were working correctly… explained to me whats the best method to protect my furnace and which filters i need to be using… not only that but he also explained the difference between the 3 service contracts they have… it is crucial for me to have someone who listen to the costumer needs before jumping into conclusion and mike did that on my second home when i told him that i felt the furnace wasnt working that well… stephen also came out with mike to the second house… he was so attentive to mikes explanation on what things to focus on when there is a problem with the system… overall im happy that i signed 2 service contracts with them hoping that i wont need any serivce except for maintaince… fingers crossed… will keep u updated when i schedule a spring maintance

Well in spite of all the negative reviews here on Unilocal I decided to go ahead and give them a try. I have 3 zones in my home and went with a Climatemaster geothermal system, needless to say very expensive and its taken some time to get up and running. So far the service has been excellent, ill update everyone if that changes, but the technicians have all been knowledgeable and courteous. The sales process was easy and straightforward, the only lag was because of weather and getting the drilling equipment into the yard which was another company.
I read some of the other reviews, some were complaints that the company had a service call charge to come out and look at a system, I’m not sure why that is shocking or why they are calling for a company to come out if they all ready know how to fix something. Anyway, my experience has been really good, just goes to show that Unilocal isn’t always the most reliable place for reviews.

I had a one year contract for 2 zones plus water heater and gas log fireplace coverage. I asked that someone call me and explain the difference in price from the previous year for the same coverage (+$ 145~35% increase). I only received one visit during the year and that was a check in the middle of the summer (tried to get it at beginning of A/​C season but they were too booked to accommodate). They never checked heating, water heater or fireplace. The burden is on the homeowner to arrange and schedule visits. The price of the contract is not worth one visit and the potential risk of failure is not that great for the price and services received. In addition I have still not received a response to talk to someone to explain to me why I should continue the contract. It’s been over a week and I am still waiting for a response.

McCrea installed and sold the carrier HVAC system we got when we bought our house. System was only 7 yes old when it started having issues. They tried to «fix» our coil with a 250 $ leak seal that failed… then wanted to charge us 2000 for the coil repair. McCrea is a large HVAC company that feeds on qty of work, not the quality. Seek a smaller well reviewed outfit on Unilocal and save some $$$.

Our house came with a HVAC system from this company and our furnace died, giving it an overall lifespan of 4 – 5 years, which is half that of the warranty of most companies. This company only offers a 2 year warranty on the parts they sell though.
When I called, my heat was out. I asked them to fix the furnace — which it requires $ 109 for anyone to come out to diagnose. I already told them the part, but I assumed they would be able to fix it quickly since they installed it. The guy came out and spent 5 minutes on it before he determined that the part that I had mentioned was broken. I mentioned that I was worried that my pipes would freeze if we don’t get that fixed. He then said they would order the part. It took nearly a week of running a bunch of space heaters before I called them and demanded to know why they hadn’t called me back and they told me that the part was ordered but just hadn’t come in yet. They should be able to fix it sometime next week. That’s 2 weeks for a SIMPLE PART replacement.
My fix was to overnight the part directly from the manufacturer and install it myself. Downside, I wasted $ 109 on a diagnosis, but saved $ 600 on an overpriced part from this company (and having to listen all about the service contract that they really want you to sign).

Bought a brand new home in Haymarket va April 2010, and McCrea was the contractor who did the AC unit installations for the Builder, three years in (July 2013) living in the home and AC lines behind the wall sprung a leak. I called them (since they did the installation and their contacts were glued to my unit) to come out and check the problem out, the man who came in (July 2013) instead said the damper was shut and it was to be open. I also lived a good part of my life in the tropics and tolerate heat well, therefore do not run my AC much during the summer either. Which makes me believe that the leak had to happen over time and the water proofing in the dry wall allowed the water to collect over time, when finally drywall was open you could see where the water had taken its toll on the timber behind drywall. To access the damper one has to open up an access area for that, and I never did touch that. I steer clear of machines. I saw the technician pry the silver/​grey tape to access the area and explain he was opening the damper which was shut. Because I was not satisfied to just fix the dry wall before I figure out source of the actual leak behind the dry wall I asked a contractor to break the dry wall to ensure what the problem was and where exactly the leak was from, he identified it as an AC pipe that was not properly insulated. They took no responsibility for it at all, yet they are the ones who did the installation and came for the visit where they said the damper was the issue, charged me and left me to fend for myself. These people have some very questionable business practices. I ended up having the AC pipe fixed and drywall repaired by different contractor. Today, my heat is running but the house is not very warm and area around the AC is hot, come to find that, the place the mccrea man had opened up to access the damper was open. When he opened it, he did not remove the old tape and then placed, new tape on top of old tape and with the heat it could not stay closed. The lady whom I spoke with today is very rude and tells me that it is past 30 days after the work was complete. However the job was done in a shoddy manner not once twice. First when the unit was installed and then when he came in to «fix» the damper. I highly doubt this was the problem but rather just a way to get me to pay him to come out to do nothing and waste my time. This is because I became aware of the leak when the smoke detector exploded and then it went off. The fire department men who responded to the call actually said they suspected it was an AC line leak, which was why I called McCrea to come fix the issue. But McCrea came out and jut fixed the damper and did not even bother to check behind the dry wall, I went ahead and called another contractor. who breached drywall and identified a gash on the AC line insulation and water marks leading to the smoke detector. Until the damage was properly fixed under the advice of the fire department, I did not run the AC unit to avoid further complications. I am very lucky. The water leak could have been disastrous considering that, the leak was in the ceiling to a fairly small room, and in close proximity to the ceiling light and fan connections. when the fire marshal opened up the smoke detector when they came out, there was water dripping from it! I am also lucky that there was no mold that developed otherwise this could have created additional health risks and financial expenses. I have chronic bone pains as rheumatism runs in my family. We bought a new home in Ashburn VA. McCrea is the HVAC contractor for the new home. There are two AC units in the house, one for main level and the other for upstairs.
Ever since we moved in, we have been experiencing problems with the AC unit for upstairs. If the outside temperature is near 90 degrees, the unit would be running non-​stop but the room temperature can NOT get lower than 79 degree even we set it at 76 degrees.
after a few returns by their technicians, they have no solutions to the problem. One of the service manager told us «don’t lower the temperature below 79 degree». In another instance when I called McCrea. Its service desk told me” if the temperature is lower than 79 degree in the evening, then IT IS OK”.
We are still trying to work with the company. things are not looking good at all. We believe either the unit is not function properly or it is under designed to carry the load.
It has been over two months now and we still found ourselves working with them at square one. very frustrating process.

First time I used them four years ago, I took off work and sat in a 95 degree house waiting my morning four-​hour window. One of the men who worked in the office finally showed up at 7:00 p.m. and jerry-​rigged the a/​c because he wasn’t a repair technician. I called last night for emergency service and was called right away by their technician, Bernie, who said he would be out this morning between 7:30 — 7:45, so I called in late for work. When I finally got a hold of Bernie around 8:00 a.m. he acted like he didn’t know what I was talking about and said he was in Southern Maryland. Told me to call the office for an appointment. I called the office and complained but was told someone from the emergency office would call me back. The woman who called me was argumentative and unapologetic and told me their boss said not to take «COD» customers, just ones with maintenance agreements. I guess they’re not interested in new customers who need new units. I will never call this place again. They installed the piece of junk there now.

If I could give it zero stars, I would. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. We spent thousands of dollars on a new AC unit from these guys and have already had them come out about 5 times to fix something! They don’t know what they are doing AND they are crooks. We called one night to have an emergency guy come out because our baby was sleeping upstairs and the unit stopped working yet again. The temp was rising to almost 80 degrees and the guy told me that «it must be caused by some electrical box outside from Dominion Power and that sometimes these units just go out for anywhere from 30 mins to 3 hours if too many people are turning on their AC units at once.» I asked if he was kidding and asked if it was common for their units to shut off for hours at a time. He said «no, not common, but it happens.» I’m sure this is his standard excuse for not wanting to make the trip out, which may be a factor of the company having crappy systems and not hiring enough people to do these emergency calls. If you google this company you will see it has a number of negative reviews. something I noticed too late. I would have used another company, any other company. They also overfilled our system with freon and had to come twice to take some out. We also have water damage to our bedroom ceiling, caused by their unit. I called them as soon as I noticed the damage, which occurred right after the installation, and the guy took pics and said it wasn’t from their system and implied we had a leak in our roof. Right after that my husband went into the attic and found what they should have discovered, some coil or tubing that wasn’t properly tightened and was causing the leak. They came back and fixed that but still haven’t called us back about fixing the water damage.
