Bikestation Washington, D.C., which can house over 100 bicycles in 1,600 sq. ft. of free-​standing ultra-​modern glass and steel design, is part of a growing network of Bikestations and related transit centers springing up in cities across the U.S. that are planned, implemented and often operated by Mobis Transportation/​Bikestation. As a completely secure facility available by membership, Bikestation Washington, D.C. represents this new approach to alternative transportation. The facility will be staffed by Bike and Roll Washington DC 66 hours per week and available to members 247. In addition to secure bike parking, the facility also provides a changing room and lockers. Bike and Roll Washington DC offers bike rental, bike repair and retail sales. The Bikestation location at Union Station allows commuters to take public transportation to the station, pick up their bicycles and go to work, shopping or entertainment.

History

Established in 2009.

Mission: Bikestation seeks to improve the quality of life in urban communities through the development and operation of bike-​transit centers and related infrastructure.

Vision: We envision communities where bicycling is an integral part of the transportation system resulting in cleaner air, safer streets and healthier living.

Values: We value innovative, creative, and efficient solutions to addressing the transportation inequities in our communities.

Modeled after European and Japanese examples, Bikestation Long Beach was the first facility of its kind to open in the U.S. in March of 1996. Bikestation Palo Alto and Bikestation Berkeley opened in 1999; Bikestation Seattle opened in May 2003. Bikestation Santa Barbara opened in 2007 and Bikestation DC opened in 2009. Bikestation Claremont and Bikestation Covina opened in February 2010, and Bikestation Hillsboro (OR) will soon open in September 2010.

Manager

Andréa White-​Kjoss is president and chief executive officer of Mobis Transportation/​Bikestation, whose vision is the transformation of the American transportation system to include technology-​networked and interoperable choices such as transit, bicycles, car-​sharing and small electric vehicles in order to reduce congestion and emissions, and improve health and quality of life.

Andréa and the Mobis/​Bikestation team have consulted with public and private entities on multimodal planning and operations throughout North America and in China and Mexico. Andrea speaks regularly at conferences about multimodal design to planning and execution. Recently, Andréa spoke at a press conference on Capitol Hill in Washington DC regarding the role of the private sector in implementing a new transportation future, alongside various legislators and officials or their staff, including Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, Senator Chris Dodd, and Congressmen Earl Blumenauer and James Oberstar.
