These people are thieves! I paid with a debit card and left a fair tip. I checked my account later that night only to find that they’d taken it upon themselves to add to my bill and charged me 20% tip which is more than I authorized. Like I said, I’d used a debit card and I needed that extra money. Now can’t afford something else that I really need. This business is not trustworthy and I will never eat here again. If you must go here, don’t pay with a card, they will over charge you! Update: This error was later corrected by the restaurant.

Stopped in for a beer and a bite recently and was extremely disappointed. I had visited this place several times in the past, but what I experienced this time made me re-think if I will ever return. It’s a dive type bar, low lights, very diverse crowd and so-so food. The problem this visit was service, or lack of service. After asking if we should just seat ourselves, we took a table across from the bar. After 20 minutes, we left. No one came over to the table. They had one server on and two bartenders. The young lady was trying her best, but she seriously had more than 15 tables. The bartenders, or BARGODS, as I soon came to find out, did nothing to assist her. Very poor customer service. A definite no return.

The Rooster was a regular spot when I lived in DC. I still make ceremonial visits when in town. Traditional bar with good tunes and the perfect place to catch up with friends or relax. Get served fast and unlikely to get someone else’s drink spilled on you.

Just a few drinks on our last night in DC. Great service, and a good selection of drinks. As an Englishman, I can say that this bar was not English at all, and that’s not a bad thing in this context. We didn’t eat so can’t comment. Would definitely come back.

Despite having worked within 2 blocks of this place for 6 years, I have never actually been to it in its proper context as a pub. However, it is a fantastic place to have a simple, reasonable sit-down lunch during the workday. It’s an «establishment» type institution that is popular with the older businessman crowd who you can envision possibly having gone there back when a drink or two with lunch was standard and wood paneling was a lot more common. They cook a very good, very large burger with lots of toppings and fries or onion rings for $ 11, and the service is great. What more can you ask for?

Great bartenders. Really cool hole-in-the-wall vibe. Good beer selection, nice prices. Lively. One of my favorite hangouts.

½ price Weds wings night. good draft selections ranging from $ 5 – 8. I thought the place would be packed with wings AND trivia night together. but it was pretty empty at 8:45. We found our seats at the bar and ordered our wings and beers very quickly. The bartender was awesome and fast. and even asked us if we wanted to watch something particular on the TV in front of us. he actually got us the Mets game! We ordered 2 traditional and 1 lime. the wings are MASSIVE! The orders were 8 wings each. We would’ve been full with 2 orders. too bad we thought they’d be dinky ones. Both were super meaty and had good flavor. Traditional was spicier than expected. All the wings came with plenty of blue cheese to tame your taste-buds. The wings were battered and fried so they weren’t dry and were quite juicy! Def a go to spot for weds wings night.

dive bar? yeah sure ok it doesnt have the glitz and glamour of some ‘select’ lounges and bars downtown but whatevs our food was pretty mediocre, i got the ribs with fries and a whisky sour(weak but ok), others got the rooster burger and quesadilla. service– eh, left something to be desired all this cost over $ 60 bucks, not worth it

A small English/Welsh/Irish pub with an excellent happy hour special, reasonably priced food, and top-notch customer service. DC people love to throw around the term«dive bar,» usually in the pejorative, to describe small independent bars whose menus don’t include foie gras and/or lack a $ 12 cocktail that takes twenty minutes to make. Those of us that actually grew up outside of the beltway know what a dive bar really is, and Black Rooster is far too nice and welcoming to be considered a dive. Instead, it is exactly what the name implies — it’s a British/Irish/Welsh pub, with a wide selection of excellent drinks and excellent(mostly Americanized) pub food. I came here with some friends to celebrate a Birthday happy hour. Walking in you feel the authenticity and blue collar attitude of a small pub — dart boards on the wall, a bunch of regulars, and a beautiful Welsh bar(festively decorated for Mardi Gras). We sat down at our reserved table near the front. Our waitress was very accommodating and quick with the orders. I was delighted to see Half & Half on the menu($ 5-$ 6), so I exclusively ordered that for the night. They pour a very nice Guinness here — fresh with a good head. We were also able to sample some of the appetizers, including the nachos and cheese fries, which were very tasty and essential bar food. The Happy Hour is excellent — $ 4.50 Rails, $ 1.50 off drafts/wine, and $ 3 PBRs. There was a time when bars represented the American experience — a melting pot for accountants and lawyers to co-mingle with plumbers and day laborers since everyone, no matter the profession, loves to drink. You get that feeling here, and I’m thrilled that some bars like this still exist in DC. So if you just want some excellent pours and great pub food, you’ll find your needs met at Black Rooster Pub.

It’s nice to have a few places like this still lurking around in central downtown DC. This pub definitely has a personality and an interesting vibe to it. You can tell it’s a watering hole for folks of a wide variety of backgrouds. Well after happy hour had ended, you still run across everyone from business men in suits to college kids dancing by the door. It’s nice that both crowds can be served by the space, which has a long and narrow construction allowing party animals to have fun in the front and conversationalists to gather in the back. We decided to come the night before Valentine’s Day because we figured it would be one of the few places that didn’t care. Luckily, we were right. Everything was already decked out in Mardi Gras theme, and that was perfect. Games were playing on the TVs, fun music was playing at the entrance, and lively chats were going on all around us. Our waitress was very friendly and let us know right away that we were coming in fairly close to when the kitchen was closing. This was really helpful because we knew in advance and made our decisions quickly. My fiancé and I decided to go a bit light on the food tonight since that wedding is coming up, but we still indulged in a few greasy delights. They had a late night special of mini quesadillas, so we ordered a vegetarian one. He wanted some kind of protein just for something different, so we ordered the appetizer sampler with the(vegetarian) nachos, onion rings, and calamari. The onion rings were alright, good ratio of batter to onion but they were so hot that I completely burned my tongue. The nachos were better but needed a greater variety of toppings. A good half of the nachos were just warm chips with maybe a shred of cheese on them. The quesadilla was the best part, with yummy flavors but lots and lots of grease. Perhaps the best part of our meal was the bar itself. They make a pretty mean whiskey sour even when I just got a rail version. The draft list is mediocre but they did at least have one cider on tap and some local beers. I could definitely see going back their for drinks but probably not for food. All in all, a very cute watering hole for the downtown workers of all varieties, but not much in the way of great pub food.

TOTALDIVEBAR that we rented out for an event. kind of a bummer because they didn’t even play music and the alcohol was pretty cheap quality there are TV’s to watch the game if you’re a fan, that’s one plus they were LATE on serving our catered food & the bar bites were nothing special from mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers, egg rolls, to meatballs maybe i needed to come on a regular day instead of for our event?

The Black Rooster Pub is a dark horse in regards to delicious pub grub in the District. No one knows it yet, but this place has the best fried chicken and fish and chips in town. The. Best. Add good but simple drinks and an incredibly warm and welcoming dive bar atmosphere(accented by intricate stained glass and carved wood) and you have a recipe for the best pub in D.C. And I mean that. I love this place. I’d like to move in. They might have room in the back for a cot…

The bar is clean, optimally located for the power office crowd, and generally not too packed. I ponied up to the outdoor patio and enjoyed a milk stout while working on a paper. Bartender was very friendly, and helped guide me to a good beer without being pretentious. Prices are typical DC — $ 7 for a pint of local brew. I was glazed by the hour is already spent in the mad world of my paper, so I didn’t look too long for the happy hour specials. The addition of wifi would be a great selling point for folks like me in this evening’s situation. But typically wifi at a bar isn’t a selling point, so I totally understand why it isn’t made readily available.

3.5 Stars Ah, another pub. It kinda lacks an identity(other than a general pub) and there are thousands like it. Even still for an expensive D.C. it does have a pretty nice happy hour — for food and drink. Fortunately we went during this glorious of times which made the experience a bit better. So this place gets the extra half star for value. I ordered the veggie burger(yes, i was made fun of by several of my friends) but it wasn’t your usual patty made from beans, rice, tofu or lawn mower clippings as you would expect. Its a marinated portobello mushroom and you can add various toppings to it. It was pretty good(and in my defense i got this because i didn’t want to feel full due to the copious amounts of beer which was going to follow) and came with some sweat potato fries which were also pretty good. The beer selection is decent, but a bit below average for a pub. I think most of our group was happy with this spot because of the price and we had a good seating arrangement for the amount of people we had. But, I have to say, I don’t think id seek out this place again unless i was looking to save a buck.

To me this is 5 star as pubs go. The Chesapeake chicken is amazing, also had crab cake sandwich which is very good too. The service is good and atmosphere is pubish! I think considering the area and quality it is priced fairly too!

Service was a little slow when my boyfriend and his two brothers and I came here for dinner last Tuesday night. Food was good, and we arrived in time to take advantage of happy hour specials which included $ 5 burgers. The burgers came with fries which was a nice surprise. We were all bummed the nachos we ordered came out with our dinner. We ate most of our burgers and fries and the nachos went home. Good patio seating although that night, and maybe other nights, seating seems to be taken up people who spend a long time sitting.

We stopped in for an early dinner(5pm) on Friday. The place was sort of crowded; the service inexcusably bad. I had to track down our waitress just to get menus and then again when we needed drink refills and then again when we wanted to pay our check. Okay, twice when we wanted to pay our check. Plus, she was sporting a pretty wicked cold sore on her lip. Gross. The prices are reasonable for DC and the food was OK. Truth be told, my salmon BLT was better than OK and is probably the only reason this place is getting any stars. My sister and husband both got the fish and chips. They both though it tasted good, but the fish was overly breaded and extremely oily by my standard. Plus, it was fried until it was nearly burnt. Ick. My dad got the burger and asked for it medium-rare. It came out well done. We didn’t bother sending anything back, because we didn’t feel like waiting 45 minutes for the waitress to come back over and grace us with her presence. Overall, this pub is passable. If my food wasn’t as good as it was, they definitely wouldn’t be getting 2 stars. I can’t say it enough: the service was horrendous. I won’t bother coming back.
