Cafe Mozart

I have travelled throughout Austria and Germany for over a month combined. Café Mozart ranks as high as the best restaurants I visited during my travels. The prices are slightly high but comparable to similar places abroad and in DC. The food is authentic and phenomenal as is the good beer selection. The atmosphere is elegant and intimate, lovely. The icing on the cake is that Café Mozart has a great German supermarket in front stocked with all the best German/​Austrian candies, food, and cooking needs.

Café Mozart is a German restaurant that my friends and I have been wanting to try while we were out here in DC.
The restaurant is in the back of the affiliated Konditorei and deli. If you go, you must go through all the tempting pastries and food displays to get there! There are a lot of delicious things on the menu. Schnitzel, Goulash, Stroganoff, potato soup, and Wurst among them.
I selected the Schlacht Platte, which was a sampler that came with Pork Loin and a choice of Wurst (Bratwurst in my case) with German Potato Salad and Sauerkraut. For dessert, we ordered the Viennese Apple Strudel, which was the perfect end to our German meal.
I definitely loved the authenticity of this place. Our waitress spoke with a German accent and asked several times how were enjoying the food. Kudos to her and for keeping our iced teas refilled!

Sorry normally don’t write bad reviews… I’m German, live in the US now but still close ties to the country. Ordered the Jägerschnitzel and it was a real disappointment. I bet this place was good at some point but is now filled with people that aren’t quite sure what German food is supposed to taste like– including the kitchen. Just an FYI

We had the family style meal, which is a deal at $ 35/​person for three entrees, three sides, and three desserts. The desserts were especially delicious. The ambiance including a piano player was excellent.
My only complaint is that the place was incredibly understaffed for a Saturday night with only two waitresses covering the entire restaurant and the bar. As a result, service was slow: I was left without anything to drink for long stretches during the meal and it took a long time to resolve the check.

My husband is German and even he agrees that this place is worth checking out! Good food, generous portions and sides. My husband was excited when he saw their wall of German candy when you first walk in.

A lovey restaurant with lots of surprises.
Upon entering, it a little shop with European grocery with a deli and bakery. As to walk farther into the store, it becomes a café /​bar. In the back, is the restaurant. Live music playing. On the Saturday we were there gentleman was playing the piano.
We made a reservation since we didn’t know how busy they would be. The staff was super pleasant and pretty prompt. Linda was our server. Super nice and always making sure we were doing ok.
We ordered the Sauerbraten. The beef was lean and pretty tender. Ordered the red cabbage with it. Super tasty. The spatzel was a bit disappointing. Pretty bland.
Also ordered the SCHLACHT PLATTE with a choice of a sausage (I ordered the smoked Bratwurst),
a slice Kassler rippchen (smoked pork loin), German potato salad, sauerkraut and red cabbage, and slice of Viennese Apple Strudel. So yummy but do much food.
Plus they also provide a bread basket with 4 types bread.
The menu is pretty extensive. No shortage of options.
Can’t wait to go back.

This place is deceiving from the outside. It looks like a regular café/​deli but when you go in, the place is huge! It’s got three section, the front that you see the dessert/​deli, the middle section which is like a bar (very casual) and then the back which is the dining section (restaurant style).
We ordered the sausage sampler and the curry knackwurst. They were both good but nothing mindblowing. We’ll be back to try some of their other dishes.

There is a German market in the front and restaurant in back. The poppy seed cake is very bitter, yuck. I purchased Mahjes herring because it’s our favorite, unfortunately I paid $ 7.50 for a small jar. I have found it in a grocery store near the zoo for $ 3.75 and have stocked up. So I won’t be back to C. M.

So you’re nostalgic for Deutschland, eh? Wanderlust knocking at your door, but you can’t make it to Deutschland? Well, Café Mozart is the next best thing to your Germany wants and needs!
From the moment you walk into Café Mozart you will think you were transported over to Germany. There is a little bakery/​deli that you walk through on your back back to the «fine dining» restaurant. Once, you get to the restaurant you will feel as if you are in a true German beer hall or even a Wisconsin Supper Club.
Now, happy hour is offered from 4−7pm, which rules! Everyone needs a place around Metro Center where they can sneak off, too a little early. Happy hour changes every day, but Liter mugs of draft German beers are always $ 11! They also offer happy hour on pints and half liters, too.
If you are looking for some authentic schnitzel or sausage, you need to make your way to Café Mozart. A Sausage Platter offers 5 different kinds of sausages: bratwurst, wieusswurts, knackwurst, smoked bratwurst and polish kielbasa. These sausages are served with German potato salad, sauerkraut and red cabbage! What a steal! If it matters to you, the potato salad is served cold and both sauerkraut and the red cabbage are served warm.
In true German fashion, there is an accordion player who is walking around the restaurant playing/​singing German tunes and riling up the customers. Though most people think this place is on the strange side, it really helps out your wanderlust when you are dying to hop on a plane and jet to Germany.

This place will have a special place in my belly for some time to come.
German food in DC wasn’t what I envisioned on my food journey on this trip. But now, if I ever make it back to DC, this will be on the rotation.
Liters of beer? Check.
Homemade sauerkraut with little delicious bits of meat treasures? Check.
Homemade applesauce? Check and check.
The potato goulash is… remarkably good. Savory, mildly smoky, a yummy veggies.
The veggie plate is also delish. The potato dumpling is something that I will crave for some time after flying home and not being within walking distance to have.
It is a little weird walking into the deli/​store first but once you are in the back part of the restaurant, you won’t even notice.
There was even a piano player while we were there.

Boy, do they serve a lot of food here! We went here for dinner late on evening and was able to walk right in past their European grocery store and deli, and the Café’s bar. We got seated and immediately able to enjoy the elderly Austrian woman in lederhosen playing the polka on her accordian. We had potato pancakes for an appetizer and could have split the dinner for two people afterwards. The sausage dish was pretty good and the German potato salad with bacon and red cabbage was good. I’m not a sauerkraut fan unless it’s with sausage at the ball park.
The Austrian potato salad without bacon was good as well, The schnitzel was good.
Service was fine. Had to buy some candies in the grocery store on the way out.
I’d eat here again.

My favorite bar in DC, great food, drinks and the staff are amazing, definitely recommend this place.

Went here last Friday night because of a coupon I had. To get to the restaraunt you have to go through a German deli.
The restaurant has a nice if odd décor. Piano was being played which makes sense given the name.
Service was a bit of an issue. Our waiter was just not friendly. He made everyone feel rushed and didn’t really offer suggestions or help when asked. He also cleared plates much too fast and without asking. He didn’t ask how our beers or food was either. Maybe he was overworked but service was huge disappointment.
Beer was great as expected. I ordered sausage platter which was good. All different kinds. German potato salad was excellent. Red cabbage not so much. Gf was happy with her chicken schnitzel. The portions are large but prices are a little high.
Too full to try desert, although menu looked good. I’m not sure I’d go back.

Fantastic, authentic, German cuisine. I had the Rinder Rouladen (beef roulade), my wife had the venison goulash. Both were accompanied by Spätzle.

Hadn’t been here for probably a good 15 years, so was super excited to go back! This evening I had Amadeus Shrimp, which was tasty, a little spicy, and extremely filling! Service was lightening fast, and I was most pleasantly surprised to be serenaded by a wonderful accordion player. My dad played the accordion so I have a big soft spot for the instrument — don’t judge me! Just go there and enjoy the wonderful food and friendly staff! If you’re lucky, the accordion player will be there. :)

My husband claimed that I’m hard to feed. I told him, «non-​sense, I love trying new food/​cuisines!» Then I remember the layover we had in Munich last summer — where I struggled to pick anything in the whole airport to eat. Pretzel and mustard? *frown*, sausage? *double frown*, meat and potato stew? *triple frown*.
But then the Asian in me just couldn’t turn down a good offer — I came across
certificate $ 25 off for $ 50 meal. So with the deal, I convinced my husband that I’m a palately– evolved woman; he skeptically joined me at Café Mozart for a lunch date.
We came towards the end of the lunch hours so we were the only ones dining. Our waitress gave us more than enough time to go through the menu (she disappeared quite a bit) — so although I did struggle to choose my entrée (my husband was right — I CAN be picky), I had top 3 chosen by the time she was ready to take our order.
Beef ruglah with potato salad and spetzel — My husband couldn’t stop raving about his dish — the portion was ginomous yet he polished his whole plate — endless smiles, endless thumbs up!
Rahm trout with German potato pancakes and spetzel — the mushroom cream sauce was beyond delicious (wished they drowned the whole fish with it), the breaded trout was perfectly crusted. The fish itself was moist and flakey — and the portion alone could probably last me 3 full meals! I wished I orderd 2 side portions of German potato pancake — nicely seasoned and pan-​fried. I wasn’t too crazy about spetzel (German styled pasta + cheese) — clumpy and flavorless.

Polish sausage — again, my husband ate it all up! He wished he had a stomach for a second.
Hazelnut torte — I had no prior experience in coming across German sweets so I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be this dry. It came across as stale. Being a dessert fanatic, I took one bite and spat it out. In addition, the buttercream had hardened to a point that It was difficult to fork. My husband appreciated that the cake itself wasn’t overly sweet. I, on the other hand, thought it tasted like a flavorless sponge. I should have stuck to their German chocolate cake.
Overall — $ 40 included tax and tip (thanks to the certificate) — my husband can’t wait to return; I don’t mind to try other items on the menu. Although our waitress did disappeared quite often, she was very attentive and sweet when she was present. 5 stars from my husband, 3.5 stars from me.

Ate here last night with my brother. Nothing fancy, but damn good.
Highlights includes the chicken noodle soup, tomato salad, potato pancake, sausage, and spaetzle with cheese and carmalized onions.
It was delish, and I would frequent this place if I lived in the area.

for pointing us here! Café Mozart is a hidden gem well worth your visit. Despite being a few blocks from the White House and National Mall, it is on an unassuming corner of 13^th and H street. When you first open the door, you might think you have mistakenly entered a bodega specializing in European food. The initial entrance is a store with candy and other products from Europe. The next layer is a deli with some tasty looking, and reasonably priced sandwiches. They also have some cakes (German Chocolate!) and other baked goods. Further back is a beautiful bar, which apparently has happy hour specials until 7pm and live accordian music accompanied by German songs during most evenings (Tues-​Thurs, I believe). Past the bar is the true gem, a nicely decorated restaurant with paintings, encased glasses, and other products from the old country.
During dinner, they had a pianist playing light music. The food was reasonably priced at about $ 20 an entrée, and coming from a German family, I can say that the food was remarkably authentic. We really enjoyed the currywurst and the potato soup, potato salad, and saurkraut were all very good. You also cannot go wrong with their liter of beer option (you get a beer and a workout lifting the glass). The servers were very friendly, attentive, and provided excellent recommendations and explanations of each dish. Finally, try to save room for dessert as they have an impressive array of strudels, cakes, brownies, and ice cream (highly recommend the German chocolate cake). We were very pleasantly surprised and impressed with Café Mozart and hope to be back soon with groups of friends for the happy hour, restaurant, and/​or the store and deli.

. We read the reviews and decided to give it a try. We were in Washington DC for three days celebrating our anniversary. We decided to go to this restaurant for one of our anniversary dinners. The atmosphere is quite unique and very cozy. We love the accordion player she was terrific. The service was very good. The food outstanding. My husband had the Viennese veal schnitzel and the potato pancake. Awesome!!! I had the goulash and speatzel and red cabbage. Delicious! For dessert we had the Apple strudel and German chocolate cake. OMG. We are going to have to go to the gym for a week to work off all this food. But it was worth it and we had a wonderful time and we will definitely be back. You must check this place out it is really authentic German food and excellent! I would give it 10 stars if I could!!!
