Description

Specialties

While Calvert Woodley is mainly known for it’s great prices on fine wines and your favorite liquor, they also have an exceptional selection of fine, cut-to-order meats and cheeses (over 150!) from all over the world. In addition, there are dozens of fresh whole bean coffees and specialty food products you won’t find anywhere else.

If you love Scotch, there are over 40 different types in stock and they are always looking for new, small batch artisanal Whiskys you may have never heard of.

History

Established in 1982.

Calvert Woodley opened its doors in July 1982 after the merger of two competitors, Calvert Liquors (circa 1946) and Woodley Wine & Liquor (circa 1966), and is still owned and operated by one of the original owners.

We pride ourselves on personal, knowledgeable customer service, fantastic selection and hard to beat prices. When the opportunity arose for Aaron Bernstein of Calvert to join forces with Ed Sands of Woodley, the two jumped at the chance and moved to our current location in the Van Ness/UDC neighborhood at the corner of Connecticut Ave and Windom. We are proud to have 8 employees here for 30+ years, almost 50 employees in all.

Come visit us and check out our wonderful selection of wine, spirits, craft beers, cheeses, and so much more. Or check out calvertwoodley.com, it’s open 24÷7÷365!

Meet the Business Owner

Ed S.

Business Owner

Ed Sands was born and raised in Brooklyn watching the Jackie Robinson-led Dodgers. He moved to DC after college to work for the SEC, where he would meet his future (and current) wife, who’s father was in the grocery business in DC. Another nearby market became available — this one had a liquor license — so they moved in, ditched the groceries, and got in the wine and liquor business. 50 years later, he’s still going strong.

Son Michael has been involved since 1998 to help run the store.
