Carl’s Barbershop

I was in town from Richmond Virginia and needed a wet shave. «B» was my barber and he left my face feeling rejuvenating! I highly recommend this shop for a shave or facial, it was worth every penny!

These guys know how to cut hair. Yes it looks a hole in the wall but the talent is there. Highly recommend giving them try. $ 16 for a regular men’s haircut. You can’t beat that price.

I took my 2 year old to get a haircut, and Mr. Carl was phenomenal. He was patient, gentle, caring and professionalism personified. I am elated to have found a new family barber. I would highly recommend this place.

Don’t go in if you’re white. Shop is dirty. They don’t like you and don’t know how to cut your hair even if they did.

Nice guys, but they were more interested in watching basketball games than pleasing their customers. They do ok work, but don’t understand or care about subtleties. Part of my face was shaved, and parts of my neck weren’t. This wasn’t a one time occurrence.

I’m just going to get to point. I am a white male, who for most of my life has gotten my haircut at a dominican barber shop in Danbury, CT. Temple fade, low 3 on the sides and trim the top. After living in Boston a few years and now recently in DC, I can’t say I have found a barber shop that even comes close to the quality back in CT.
I would appreciate it if some of these (DC) barbers would just let me know that they do not feel comfortable cutting a white guys hair and save me the time, money and terrible hair cut that results.
I asked for a temple fade, low 3 and to trim the top. I got a 3 on the sides, all the way up the back of my head to the top of my head, thinning scissors to «blend» the sides in with the top and a chop job on top. After examining my hair at home in the mirror, you can grossly see how uneven my hair is now, some parts not even cut, other spots where you can see skin.
I don’t mean to bash this shop, I am sure they are talented in cutting other hair styles. as per other reviewers. I am just frustrated with the last 5 barber shops that I have been to throughout DC and the (lack of) scissor skills they have.

Carl’s is a great old-​school barbershop in a new-​school neighborhood. There is nothing stiff or awkward about it. It’s a fun place to hang out and talk DC sports. You won’t find $ 40 cuts here; it’s one of the least expensive barbers in the neighborhood.
I always get my hair cut by Serge, and he does a perfect skin fade each time. I don’t have to even tell him what I want. Find the barber and the cut you like and they will do it right each time, and you’ll walk out feeling like the king of the neighborhood.

I’m an out of towner looking for a place to get a nice fade. The cut I got was perfect. The staff was friendly. The shop was clean with a great vibe. I highly recommend this place.

I’ve lived here 8 years and it took me 6 to find a spot that’s just the right mix of excellence of skill, service, and atmosphere. I found it at Carl’s! Bee (by the window) is excellent every time. Even after moving farther away from the neighborhood I still make the trek to Carl’s because I only trust one shop with my cut.

Bee does well on haircuts. I have a pic posted here where my cut was perfect! Today, I asked for a 1 on top and skin on the sides… at the barber shop it looked great, when I got home, it looked like a got a 1 all over my head… which I didn’t want.
I’m not worried because I usually get good cuts there, and I will continue going there… I just wanted to be honest.
…as far as the atmosphere, the barbers, including Bee, have a great friendly attitude and make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.

My new office is right down the street from this Shop. Barber – Serges has cut me twice and did an exceptional job. Recommend this shop to all my DC homies. They cut hair of all races. Check em out.

Every black male that isn’t from DC knows how hard it is to find a good barber out here. I searched around and after reading all of these great reviews on Unilocal I knew this was the spot to go.
The barber I had was terrible. I needed a shape up, some tapering, and some beard and mustache trimming. He used the same clippers to do all of that. He listened well. I will give him that. But he just lacks in skills. I basically walked out without a line because the line he gave me was invisible. Nothing crisp about anything he did and my line isn’t consistent all the way around. I checked the other barbers out and they were sub par as well which is why I went to the guy I went to. All in all, they’re all pretty bad.
Won’t be back.

Gives great shape ups. I haven’t got a hair cut yet. We will see how that goes.

Very friendly atmosphere. As soon as I walked in I felt a great atmosphere of barbers who knew how to cut hair. I like the place. It reminds me of an old school barbershop. The staff was great and even my barber was awesome. It saddens me to give this quality place a 2 star review.
Maybe I came in on a slow day where barbers aren’t on their A game because I was not too satisfied with my cut. I’m actually wearing a hat to work to cover my hair cut. My barber disagreed with me when I asked him to fade me higher and now I look like Forrest Gump. The fade looked like it lacked its essential component: the fade.
Oh well, I’ll continue to look for a new barbershop in DC.
Additional tips:
— show him a picture of what you want
— make small talk
— buy a hat that is fashionable just in case.

I would recommend this barbershop. I moved to DC from NY & I’ve gotta say, it’s hard to find a black barbershop. I came across this on Unilocal &, even though it is a distance, it was the closest one to me. They did a nice job cutting my hair although the price is more than what I’m used to.

If you want a reasonably priced men’s cut done right, stop in and see Vince.

Carl’s is a classic barbershop. They are the second shop I’ve tried since moving to DC nearly two years ago. I usually cut my own hair when it’s real short, but occasionally I’ll hire a barber to do the work when I grow it out. I’m skeptical about barbers because my hair is of a multiethnic texture. I asked for a basic trim + tapering, which ran about $ 20 (a bit steep, but worth it, given the results). Attention to detail was fine. The barbers professional and are cool to talk to — you don’t feel like such a stranger on your first come around. I look forward to come back for another visit.

I’ve been coming to Carl’s ever since I moved to Dupont in 2011 and couldn’t be happier. The barbers are all very good, respectful, remember their regulars by name, and charge a fair price for great haircuts. Sure it’s not the most visually appealing place but it’s a barber shop, what do you expect? The Four Seasons? If you want ‘pretty’ I’d suggest going to one of the fancy salons nearby and pay $ 50 bucks for what should only cost you $ 20. Carl’s does it right, at a fair price, and will continue to get my patronage for as long as they stay open.

Now that’s how you cut.
Was in serious need of a shape-​up, and it was going to be a few weeks before I could make it back to my usual spot in Cambridge. I never thought that Unilocal would be the place to find a barber, but Carl’s was right on the money. The dude was quick, professional, and made the shape up sharp. Everything was lined up right — none of that «it’s lopsided because your head is shaped funny» foolishness. Price was a little on the high side, but nothing too strange ($ 18). Would’ve got the full five stars if he’d trimmed up the face, or put some sheen on it, but I wasn’t trying to be leisurely either. Good to know there’s a spot I can get a quick cut in DC.
