I recently visited Civilian Art Projects for the first time for the opening of the exhibition, «Media.Mix: 21st Century Collage.» I was initially impressed by the quality of the art and exhibit’s use of the gallery space(formerly the Numark Gallery), but what I found really remarkable was how the Project carries out its mission of promoting emerging artists, many of them local, to a young art-buying market. The Media. Mix exhibit contained an innovative collection of different types of collage — from intricate matchbox dioramas to a clever wooden sculptural installation and a music video piece. The exhibit not only fulfilled its promise of showcasing collage in the 21st century, but also the gallery’s ideal of making high-quality art available to young collectors. Most of the pieces were priced under $ 500. I also liked that the gallery caters to those who want to purchase art or gifts in an even lower price bracket. It has a shop of smaller items by many of its artists, including t-shirts, jewelry and small prints. I highly recommend Civilian Art Projects, especially to those who are equally enthused about supporting emerging local artists.
