History
Established in 1989.
DC IMPACT Self Defense began in 1989 with a 25-hour Women’ s Basics course designed to meet the need for short-term but highly effective self-defense training. Previously, women could only acquire this level of skill through years of martial arts. Even then, they could be left unprepared for the language and circumstances of real attacks. Further, they did not learn the day-to-day strategies to confidently handle abusers, unwanted attention, and the sometimes subtle indignities that females could be subjected to. Even focused self-defense courses could leave them wondering if they could handle a «real» attack. Scenario-based adrenaline training answered this need. The scenarios were unpredictable, just as is any attack. Verbal skills were honed, and we found that most graduates of the program were able to avoid violence through greater awareness, projection of confidence, and verbal strategies. Later, we added men’s and teen programs, and workshops for groups.
