Frozen Yogurt Indulgence

The Frozen Yogurt Indulgence at L’Enfant Plaza is closed. The lettering in the signage has already been taken down and they have started to remove the frozen yogurt machines.

Service speed has improved. This place sells yogurt by the pound. Flavors taste delicious: chocolate, blueberry, etc.

Only wish I worked or lived near L’Enfant Plaza! I’d be here every day for the smoothies and frozen yogurt.

They don’t have an endless bank of yogurt options like some froyo places (I think they have 6 or 8) — but I love that they have both sweet and tart options. I’m usually a vanilla person anyways so the lack of flavors isn’t a big deal for me. I can still get my pulls of vanilla and New York cheesecake.
What makes this place exceptional however is the available toppings. First — you get to scoop them yourself. Very important to me as I like to do this myself. Second — THERE’S ZILLIONS OF THEM. Well not literally but they are plentiful and a great variety of cereals, candy, fruits, sauces, etc…
My last visit included:

Drizzle of caramel sauce
Since sometimes you need your yogurt in a little bit more commuting friendly form — they also have smoothies. You can create your own mix of ingredients or choose from a menu.

I’m not from DC. I don’t have a clue about DC’s froyo scene. My word is only as good as the one experience I had on a blisteringly hot day in April.
Our thirst was beyond imagining. Our strength had left us hours ago. Tired, desolate, it was like we were wandering a barren desert of food in that part of DC. Then an oasis appeared — the food court. «At least they’ll have water,» I thought. Then I saw it: Frozen Yogurt Indulgence. You had me at Frozen, but I’ll also take the Indulgence. How could I not try?
Hazelnut piqued my interest, as it should anyone. And wow! By the grace of the hazelnut gods, that’s some good froyo!
Revitalized and zipping with energy, we made it to our next destination. But we couldn’t have done it without FYI.
I also can’t shake the idea they’ve instilled in me about the breakfast oatmeal bar. Great idea. I wish I had a chance to test it out.

As a Pinkberry fan, I was hesitant to try this place at first. A few weeks after it opened, a coworker dragged me there. I was very pleasantly surprised by the taste of the froyo. I’m a bit of a froyo purist so i rarely stray from the tangy original flavor, which is great. Their toppings include a ton of fresh fruit, mochi, and lychee jelly! I really couldn’t ask for me. I now frequent this place about once a week and it’s always a welcome treat. I also use their discount card for government workers. If this place started selling boba, it would pretty much be my favorite place in DC.

pricey but great fresh toppings and amazing hazelnut yogurt. They also have oatmeal for breakfast and crepes?

I’m a 20 something college student and I had a self admitted obsession with fro yo sneak up on me this past summer. So much so that I actually interviewed to work at this place. (I’m glad I didn’t get it.) With that said I DO work in frozen yogurt and I was curious as to how the tastes/​textures might differ from where I work so I decided to stop by here and check it out.
I was thoroughly disappointed. It may just be that I’m especially versed in the art of froyo after working at a shop, but this place was just awful. The lighting is very dark and uninviting and for the location and people popping in for their afternoon pick me ups, this seems a bit… odd. Not only that, I walked in and was completely ignored by the staff (I’m required to greet every customer with a smile. Always.)
But I would be willing to let that go. They have I think…4 or 5 machines and I got a taste of all the flavors except 4 (so that’s about half) and I was not impressed. The texture was just terrible, like icy, grainy, milk water, and the taste did not make up for it. It didn’t really TASTE like anything. Just… the flavor was more on the intensity of an aftertaste… like you don’t know what it tastes like until you swallow it. Gross.
Not only that, I came in about half an hour before close and the toppings bar was just atrocious (a big no no where I work.) Most of them had already been put away and the ones that were left just looked dismal and unattended to. They were basically empty. It was a very disappointing experience overall. Will not be back.

When all of the other «new» restaurants recently opened up at L’enfant Plaza, I was there. This place. Not so much. I just couldn’t bring myself to go. I mean, I pass by every day. They even have big flat screen TVs playing Bruce Lee movies all day. Strange I thought. But then again, Bruce Lee was big on healthy living, so I reconciled that logic in my mind.
What it comes down to is that I’m not really a frozen yogurt kind of guy. But I was still curious. So one day I decided to go there. It’s self serve, so you get to «pour» your own yogurt. The catch? It’s pay by the pound. So if you get carried away and pump too much, you rack up a hefty bill (for frozen yogurt). I learned the hard way as I tried to make the perfect Dairy Queen swirl in my big cup. They have and interesting array of toppings. Everything from flax to Kiwi to mini M&Ms to oreo cookies. I have to say that the yogurt did not blow my mind. I had the mixed vanilla chocolate. It was not even creamy, but more granular icey like. It was ok. It was better with the unhealthy toppings that I adorned it with.
The burning question in my mind: Why is it so dark in there? It’s an ice cream– I mean frozen yogurt place. It should be filled with light. Plenty of light. Every time I pass by I can’t help but think they are about to close or someone forgot to pay the electricity. Which is kind of negated by the fact that I see Bruce Lee playing on the TVs. But in any case. The lack of light is just really strange to me. Almost depressing. I want to put a disco ball up there or something.

Sure, the place could be a little brighter… but I’m more about what these guys are offering, which is a pretty healthy alternative to what’s currently available here in L’Enfant Plaza. Until now, the underground has been quite dreary. I’ve worked in the area as early as 1998, and not much has changed for the better until the past year.
Anyway, FYI has Omega-​3 in the yogurt, from flaxseed. Plus, they offer ground flaxseed as one of the toppings. Yes, there are some not so healthy toppings… but you choose what you put on your frozen yogurt. Plus they also have plain, Greek, and Greek yogurt with honey… In the mornings there is also oatmeal.
There’s a new special now… Until 11:00a you can load up whatever you want and they will only charge you $ 4.99 MAX. And I think they still might be doing they’re «happy hour» special from 3:00p-4:00p.
Also they are now starting to try out some veggie smoothies, offering two kinds. I’ve spoken with Ash, who I believe is the owner, and he’s very open to getting feedback. For that, and the fact that they are trying to offer something healthy AND yummy… they get 5 starts from me!

Ok — I love fro-​yo and maybe in a couple more trips to this place I can re-​review it, but as of right now, I am not impressed. I would give this place a 2.5 if I could. And here is why:
PROS:
1) Great location for me: I work in L’Enfant Plaza area and this place is right in the promenade, so kuddos — love that I can fill my fro yo cravings while at work
2) Great topping selections. Mochi is there which I know is something some people really really like, but they also have full chocolate covered pretzels and all sorts of other goodies
3) It’s a pay by weight system, which to me is the best
CONS:
1) Design could use some help — I think it needs more lighting, the place still looks kind of closed and creepy and cold!
2) Not enough publicity about it ahead of time. Potbellys and Rotis gave out tons of flyers and stuff the first week they opened!
3) The flavors were honestly not that flavorful. I got the Mango/​Peach and Original swirl. I added Mango and chocolate on top… I mainly tasted the original flavor and the chocolate pieces I added…
I’ll give it a second shot but the FroZENyo by my house is still beating it out!

Awesome. I love fro-​yo. I’ve been waiting for this place to open since the sign came up like… MONTHS ago.
FYI is the typical «pay-​by-​weight» fro-​yo place. For the prime location of the shop, I was sorely disappointed by the amount of choices — about 8 different-​pretty standard– flavors (that might or might not change on a different basis) or you can swirl pairs of them for 4 different swirl choices. But I guess for the SIZE of the shop (pretty small), it has just the right amount of frozen yogurt that can FIT into the location.
Pretty standard, yummy froyo — a pretty good amount of toppings to choose from, and friendly staff so far :) They are still working on learning the products though… maybe I’ll go back when the staff is better trained.
In addition to the pay-​by-​weight, there are also smoothies (create-​your-​own or choose from a menu, with choices of extra ‘shots’ of vitamins, etc), customizable parfaits and oatmeal…
I had the banana and chocolate smoothie… maybe the employees are still new, but it didnt have enough of anything. Kinda bland, actually… didnt really taste the banana OR the chocolate… it was really milky and not that creamy, either.
Finally… you can get a 10% discount if you work for the government and get their rewards card :) Pretty good deal imo.

When you get past the fact that the place looks like the interior of a refrigerator (dark, chrome and cold) and realize that you can pick from a number of flavors of Fro-​Yo and tons of toppings, you’ll probably want to stop by L’Enfant Plaza’s newest food place.
FYI, it’s inside the plaza, so if you’re walking by on D St., you won’t see it. You have to go inside L’Enfant Plaza and wind your way around to the new section (near Roti, Au Bön Pain, Potbelly).
