History

Established in 2013.

Owned and operated by a prior shop mechanic and mountain bike racer, Handy Bikes DC opened its doors in January 2013 in the Capitol Hill /​Ballpark area of Southeast DC. My goal is to provide professional, prompt and reliable bicycle repair and tuneup service with quick turnaround times and reasonable prices. Vision for 2014 includes putting a mobile repair unit on the streets of DC!

Greetings! I am an active duty Navy Corpsman and Chief Petty Officer and have enjoyed bicycling as a racer and shop mechanic for years.

I have always had a fascination with small business; Handy Bikes DC is my second small business startup. While stationed at Camp Lejeune I had a handyman business, which lent itself to the Handy Bikes name. I hold a Washington DC Business License (# 400 313 901 922) and am entering my third year of business with Handy Bikes DC, and am thankful to have found a niche that needed to be filled — reasonably priced bicycle care. I have the luxury of working on bicycles as a side business, so my overhead costs are low and I can just have fun with it!

The majority of my customers are bike commuters, but I have worked on everything from $ 8k Pinarello road racing machines, full suspension off road monsters, and old rusty beaters with milk crates strapped to the back. I love them all, and I look forward to working on your bike soon.

Just had my beloved beater in for a long-​overdue overhaul and Pete did a SPECTACULAR job. She rides like a dream now, at a far cheaper price than I’d been previously quoted for that kind of work.
But above and beyond the great mechanical work, Pete was also fantastic at explaining what was necessary and why, what my options were, what I can do myself, what I can do later instead of now — and at communicating while he had my bike, checking in with updates, etc.
Totally great experience. Turns out the city’s best bike shop … Is a bike *truck.*

I brought my beloved (and busted) beater bike to Pete & his team this week for the basic tune up & cleaning package, plus some other repairs. Dupont area bike shops estimated the work & parts would cost over $ 250 but Handy Bikes fixed it up for a fraction of the cost. The bike feels 1,000 times better & Pete let me know what to come back for but didn’t go crazy replacing everything. I’m also a big fan of their scheduling system. I’ve waited over an hour in other bike shops, but they’re quick & attentive. Even if you’re not in the Navy Yard area, Handy Bikes is worth the trip. They usually pop up a couple blocks from the metro & soon the «bike truck» will be ready to hit the road & pop up in more neighborhoods.

The only thing I can add to what every other reviewer has said is that I especially appreciate Handy Bikes fixed gear knowledge and pricing rate for fixie/​single speed tune ups. Half the price and twice the service. I had just purchased a used bike and wanted a tune up. Afterward, Pete explained to me what they did, and told me what to keep my eye on without up-​selling me in any way. He definitely has my business for future work. I’ve at least stopped by every other bike shop in DC, and Handy Bikes service is the best.

Bought a third-​hand bike a year ago and brought it in for a long-​overdue tuneup to go with a recent flat. For the cost of a simple tuneup anywhere else, Pete replaced a broken spoke and an inner tube, replaced the chain and all the brakepads, and gave the bike a damn fine tuning. It now rides like electric sex. Professional, honest, quick, and precise shop run out of a van.

I’ve had the good fortune of living in the same building as Pete. I’ve had a couple of tune ups with him, and gotten some bike advice from him. I think his advice and work on my bike have been great, and kept it in great shape. And the turnaround is usually within a couple of days, so no complaints there!

Everyone likes to say «they have a guy.» Whether it’s an accountant, financial advisor, car mechanic, etc — it’s nice to say that and mean it. Pete is «my guy.» I live two blocks from him, I ride my bike EVERY DAY and while I mostly maintain it on my own, every couple of months I drop it off with Pete to get a thorough tune-​up. I have NEVER gotten my bike back and been displeased with it. It is always smooth and silent riding after I pick it up. You can make appts online and he is very very prompt. His dog is bad azz too. Highly recommend for all your bike servicing needs!

I recently had my nearly 20 year old commuter bike serviced by Pete at Handy Bikes. After getting a flat, I took the opportunity to have this local shop take a crack at some of the other problems I’ve been having with my brakes and gears. Not only did he have a simple online reservation system, but he was able to meet with me quickly, assess my bike, and complete the tune up and repairs in just a couple days. Best of all, the price was far less than what I expected and the service was great. After getting the bike back after only a couple days, I had a minor residual issue with the gears that was mostly related to the age of my bike. Pete immediately took a look at it, corrected the problem at no additional charge and got it back to me that same day. I’m amazed that my old bike feels like its new again. Great service, extremely friendly and very knowledgeable… I will definitely be going back to Handy Bikes for future service on any of my bikes.

I took my bike into a shop near my work because it was making really annoying clicking noises when I pedaled. I was told that the bottom bracket needed to be completely taken apart and cleaned — with some parts possibly replaced. Since they had such a long wait list for repairs, I took my bike into Handy Bikes instead. Not only was Pete sensitive to the fact that I used my bike to commute to work and therefore needed it back ASAP — but he double checked some more simple fixes before getting into the bottom bracket issue. Turns out, just a few bolts needed to be tightened and the clicking disappeared! Pete wouldn’t even accept payment since it was a quick fix. I will definitely be taking my bike into Handy Bikes next time I need a repair or tune up. It’s nice to find such a competent and trustworthy place near my house! (Also Pete was super friendly and didn’t make me feel dumb for not knowing a lot about bikes which sometimes I can’t say about other bike shops).

This guy is awesome! Had taken my road bike to Spokes twice — due the the gears not shifting properly and they thought they had fixed the problem both times w/​the derailer. Turns out it was missing a crank spider bolt. Part was $ 2.00 and the service rocked. Will recommend to all my friends. So happy to find a quality guy at great prices and outstanding service. Pete is extremely accessible and professional. My 80’s road bike turned out to have some bottom bracket issues that required me to bring it back a couple times. He went the extra mile to make sure he solved it and honored his guarantee. Very reasonable pricing, especially for any replacement parts that you might need. Highly recommended for any level maintenance and repairs; more affordable, faster, and personal than any bike shop that I’ve experienced.

I found Handy Bikes when doing a Google Map search of bike repair shops near my office in L’enfant Plaza after I discovered a flat tire after my morning commute. I love to support small and local businesses, so this seemed like a great choice. I called Pete Wednesday night, he returned my call the very next morning, and we scheduled the repair for that afternoon. His place is conveniently located near the Navy Yard Metro. It was a simple fix of a flat rear tire, and it took him only 10 minutes and only cost $ 10, which beats any other place in town. He even has a Square, so you can pay with credit card. Definitely going back for more work! Great business, very professional, and you should use him for all your bike needs.

I learned of Handy Bikes from a buddy of mine and came here for a full tune-​up on my brand new fixie. My buddy came with 2 fully geared road bikes for full tune-​ups as well.
It was very easy to get to Pete’s and he was very flexible and accommodating to our schedule. We originally came to Pete because his prices are wayyyyyy better than your regular bike shop.
I was pleasantly surprised with his level of courtesy and professionalism! He told both of us that we didn’t need full tune-​ups (we came for full tune-​ups and he could definitely charged us for full tune-​ups). I ended up getting a new crankset installed and my rear tire trued.
When the bikes were finished a day or two later (he was flexible with the dates), I came to pick up the bike with no problem. He was prompt and I didn’t have to wait for him.
I’ll be coming back here for all the work I’ll need on my bike and have already recommended him to 2 of my buddies.
