Review of the bike shop only.
Brought in my hybrid after a chain slippage to get the gears checked out. They said I’d need to replace my entire drive train — crankshaft, freewheel, chain, everything, and that my brake pads were shot. Quote was over $ 200 for parts and labor with a 10-​day wait.
Took the bike to another D.C.-area bike shop and they identified the crankshaft as the sole, non-​urgent, issue, while my chain, freewheel and pads checked out fine. Save your money and get your bike serviced where the mechanics aren’t so happy on upselling.

Super helpful employees, every time I have gone I have had a great customer experience. Last time I took my bike in to get the bike seat tightened/​check the gears, manager fixed it for free. Definitely recommend.

Came in looking for liquid chalk, which I had bought at this location before. The associate said she had never heard of liquid chalk and called her manager, who confirmed they didn’t carry it. Meanwhile, I Googled the brand (Mammut, without an umlaut over the U; remember this) and showed it to her, and she again said she had never heard of it. She then brushed me off when I asked about the rest of her chalked by waving and saying «it’s over there.» No further interaction, no offer to help find something else, no offer to order it online, just brusque rudeness. As I walked out the door, I heard the associate correcting my pronunciation of Mammut, as if there was an umlaut over the U. Just nasty customer service, and judging by other reviews, it’s not the first time for this place. Go elsewhere.

Go elsewhere if you are looking for a good bike shop experience. Only person that is knowledgeable about bikes is the head mechanic. Prices are high and they loose parts… what else can I say. Not an avid consumer of this shop, so it could have just been a bad day for their bike team… let’s hope so… but I’m out.

While this place has plenty of good sports and camping equipment the customer service in the Bicycle department is absolutely the worst I have ever experienced. I am an avid bicyclist and have been looking to purchase a new Hybrid replacement for my current bicycle. i am looking at a bicycle around $ 1000.00 range. I have come here on numerous occasions only to be ignored by the sales people working here. I have looked over the bicycles and wanted to purchase but never did, solely based upon the sales people that won’t even acknowledge me.
It is ridiculous that you can come to this shop looking to by a bicycle at $ 1000.00 and not get any kind of help. No wonder they are in trouble.
Look elsewhere as there are plenty of bicycle shops actually wanting to sell bicycles.

As some one who spent many days and most of my dollars in the store when they first opened back in the 80s and bought nearly all by initial gear (boats, tents, boots, bags, packs)…
I cannot be more shocked and saddened by how far the store has fallen since returning to the area a few months ago…
Returns are all but impossible
Boating and biking sections are «recreational» at best
The staff is self absorbed and limited in their real knowledge of the gear and its use
Last year’s designs are priced higher «on sale» than the current designs can be purchased online (this was the last straw)
I loved the store and had many many happy memories and purchases there. But there is no reason to shop there anymore.
Like the old Appalachian Outfitters in Vienna years ago, its time for HTO to go away.

I have shopped here for years. While their goods are plentiful with a wide array of variety, their ability to relate to the customer is sometimes lacking. Three specific examples:
1) Customers can earn dollars back. Instead of having them in the computer they give them to you on your receipt making it easy to lose them. One might shop here once a year, so it’s pretty annoying. REI just keeps it in their system; as do most stores with a similar program.
2) Today, I wasn’t allowed to drop my bike off for tune up because their bike guy wasn’t there. Can you come by this afternoon? No. We don’t make trips to the bike store hoping someone will let us in… We schedule our days to make it all work. Do you go to the supermarket hoping they will sell you milk. Can you come back this afternoon? Wtf
3) I ordered a new bike wheel to replace the old one (this is where I bought the bike). They chose one with a different fastening mechanism, so I need to buy a tool to take it off. Naturally, that’s not a big deal … But now I also can’t use my locking mechanism, which fits on to the wheel axel, so this change will cost me an additional $ 60. They could have asked me about it.
Overall, I’m pleased with the products and prices. My bike comes with $ 5 tune-​ups, which is a great deal.

I love this bike shop! employees are so helpful and really make me feel comfortable as a cyclist. I love that they keep an air pump outside for all bicyclists to use; Hudson Trails go to great lengths to avoid the DC cycling shop pretention. I always leave this shop feeling like a member of a bicyclist family.

The store’s personnel are knowledgeable and helpful, and the selection is good. Although you won’t find any bargains, you will find whatever you need for an outdoor adventure. Only reason why I am not ecstatic is you have to bring in a bike for an inspection and then make an appointment to have it fixed, so you basically need to bring in your bike twice to have it repaired.

I just ran over to HTO to grab some items for my husband before he takes a trip out west. The first employee who helped me was awesome. She didn’t know every detail about every item and said it was because of her age (she was middle aged and older than her fellow employees). However, I am giving this store two stars because I was so freaked out by those younger more «knowledgeable» folks working with her. Two other employees pretty much surrounded me while she and I were having a conversation and just started giving me way too much information about items that I hadn’t even asked for. When the woman who had originally been helping me went to get an item I requested, one of the other employees just stood about 5 inches away from me and watched me while I looked at water bottles. She left when the phone rang. The original employee gave me the item I requested and when I went to pay for my items, the young woman who had been all over me just a few minutes earlier completely ignored me for at least 4 minutes while she talked on the phone! It sounded she was talking to a manager at the store who I am sure would have understood that she needed to check out the only customer standing at the register! If anyone is going to this store– find the tiny lady with at least two decades over everyone else in the store. She is really helpful, friendly, and efficient. I think the younger ones have spent too much time in front of computers! (Disclaimer: I am 33 – ).

If you are need of a bike go see Dennis! He asks you a lot of questions, has you sit on the bike and takes into account your inseam and body type. I really enjoyed talking to him, he was very knowledgeable. Would come back only to see Dennis! HTO needs to keep him, he is great! Can’t wait for spring to come so I can test out my new bike!

Hi to all. I made a recent bike purchase at H.T.O. So far I have been very happy with the store, staff and in particular John the, bike shop manager. I have been very impressed with his knowledge of equipment and accessories. One question I asked him was why is my computer screen turning black in the sunlight, after a moment,
(like six seconds), he asked me if I was wearing polarized sun glasses when I was riding. The answer was yes and told me that was the problem. The first person in years to have the answer.

Bike repair only:
They were excellent. Brought my nephew’s bike in most dubiously. This is a squished in little store next to the conglomerate that houses Best Buy and the Container Store. (God I love the shopping options in Tenleytown!!!)
The bike department is located on the top level. ONCE I HAD FOUND IT (having dragged the bike into the downstairs by mistake) they replaced the missing part on his bike, did not charge me for labor, let me talk their ears off and had me out the door before my half hour on my meter had even come close to running out.
I honestly thought I was going to have to drop the bike off, pick it up in two days on the way to vacation. I imagined a hassle and experienced pleasantness. Nice!

I commute on my Bike. It’s my career. The staff at the bike shop, led by Dennis, are professional and efficient. Today the bike staff went out of their way to help fix a flat tire. Went to HTO this afternoon to consult how to fix the tires of my bike. The staff were very friendly and helpful — they not only gave me suggestions, but actual fixed it! They also helped with breaks and pedals!

Most people in DC end up at HTO because its the most convenient camping/​sporting goods store to pubic transportation. For those without a car, that gives it pretty much a monopoly on carless District dwellers.
I wish I could review the bike shop and the camping store separately because they feel like two completely different stores. Upstairs is a relatively inept bike shop which staff sales clerks who know little to nothing about bikes. If you don’t know what retensioning and truing a wheel is, and that factory made wheels are not as strong as handbuilt wheels, you might need to rethink your staff a bit.
That said, a quick jaunt downstairs to the camping/​climbing/​outdoors section is completely different. There, I’ve always had excellent service, while the selection isn’t like walking into an REI, its always sufficient and the sales clerks really know their stuff. Sure, the prices are always MSRP, but if you have a membership, you do get rebates for your next shopping trip. The employees always ask me what trip I’m preparing for and if I feel like I want to do research on a product, they have been quick to offer up a pen and paper for me to write down the models I’d like to research. They don’t care if you take stuff out of the packaging to investigate a bit more. They even let me use the employee bathroom once while I was waiting for them to restart their computer system when it crashed.

Yes, HTO is expensive. But if you don’t want to travel too far out of DC, this is the best option.
I think it’s important to do your own research when you get here. It’s easy to be persuaded by all the goodies and high-​tech gear here. The people who work here, at least for me, have been just the right amount of present and helpful.
I wish it wasn’t so cramped, though. I guess there is a reason to go far out from the city sometimes.
Nonetheless, you’ll definitely find what you need here.
