Johns Hopkins University Advanced Academic Programs

What a disappointment this program has turned out to be! I loved the few in-​person classes I took here but they have reduced the number you can take in person so much that almost every core class is only available online. And the online classes are pathetic! The teachers pretty much phone them in. I expected so much more from Hopkins — especially at the outrageous prices they charge per class! I would not recommend this program unless they give it a major overhaul. Which doesn’t seem to be in happening any time soon.

Completed my Masters of Science in Applied Economics here in 2012. Overall, I thought the program was more rigorous and my classmates and instructors much more talented and bright than I initially expected. One big advantage here over typical grad school is that the students and professors are all full-​time employees elsewhere in the DC area. This means they are actively using their skill set in the workplace. I found the manner of instruction to therefore be more applicable (thus «applied» economics) to my work. Coursework could be very difficult, and out of 10 classes in the program, only one, Computable General Equilibrium Modeling, was a dud mainly because of the instructor. All other nine of my professors were extremely engaging and interactive. Class sizes were very small, usually 20 people maximum. Highly recommended for this specific degree.

I gleaned an immense amount of knowledge in the program; however, the advisors are lacking in communication skills. Further, if you are a distance student you are severely limited when it comes to meeting or taking the courses that «meet residential requirements.» The Bahama field course was a nightmare also, so I certainly wouldn’t recommend taking that either. I got e-​coli and welted with hundreds of bug bites, the conditions were horrible.

I am a student in the Global Security Studies graduate progam and love it! The professors are very active in security field careers and the courses are designed to be practical for real world use. The program is flexible and instructors are understanding; most student are full-​time employees. This December I will be graduating the program in less than two years while working full time in the government! Johns Hopkins is the most prestigous institution in the area and I came to realize this more and more based on remarks throughout my interview process. I believe that it was in part thanks to JHU that I was able to land my dream job! Without much background in the security field, I quickly gained intellectual, well-​rounded knowledge in this arena.

I’m almost done with the program and I have been overall very satisfied with what I got out of it. It combines academic knowledge with professional practice and it is so flexible that could suit any busy professional’s schedule. I highly recommend it!

I’m one-​year into my master’s program in communication at Johns Hopkins. The professors are excellent. The classes are challenging. And as a busy working communication professional, I appreciate the flexibility of the online environment. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for a high quality master’s edcuation.
