Michael Thomas Custom Clothiers

Went to Michael Thomas Custom Clothiers to purchase a tuxedo for my wedding. First off, the customer service was fantastic. I was borderline psychotic about the particulars of a few attributes of the suit and Mike was accommodating the entire way. Second, the fit of the suit was near perfect the first time I tried it on. The on-​site master tailor was able to make 1 or 2 very minor alterations while I waited around, and after he was done the suit fit like a damn glove.
I also think that the quality of the construction of the suit is worth mentioning. I have done a couple «custom» suits in the past from «traveling» tailors that visit the area and meet with clients and take mass orders. The quality of the suit that I got from Michael Thomas is definitely superior. The suit just feels strong throughout.
All in all, I would highly recommend checking this place out. Deeply satisfied with my experience here.

I’d give them 6 stars if possible.
I needed a suit made on a short timeline and the staff not only met my needs but exceeded all expectations. Had a great suit in hand two weeks later! I did pay a premium for the rush, but they were able to make it happen when no one else in DC could. Final alterations took another day (done by their in house master tailor) but overall very happy with how things turned out. I actually ended up putting in an order for a custom shirt before I left the store.
Great staff, great quality, and totally reasonable prices. Only negative is their website which could definitely be better. Either way I’ll absolutely be back.

I had to get a suit for a friends wedding coming up. Since I dont have many suits, I decided I wanted something really nice, so I came here.
Michael took a ton of measurements and was extremely helpful. There are so many different options, I had no idea, ha. Michael was able to make some great suggestions, while also making sure I was getting what I wanted.
I picked up the suit the other day and I am very pleased with how it turned out. It fit perfectly and didn’t need any adjustments/​alterations. I will almost feel bad looking better than the groom on his wedding day, haha. I will highly recommend to friends and family.

Their expertise in custom clothing is unmatched in DC. I recently had a blazer altered from their master tailor Halim. He did an outstanding job listening to exactly what I wanted done and he delivered with perfection.

I just came upon this gem. It is one the classiest store that I have had the pleasure of shopping at. The sales staff is incredibly knowledgeable and professional. I moved to town for work and needed a new wardrobe for a position I took. The staff took the time to help me pick out amazing combinations of shirts, pants and ties. The tailoring is impeccable and I highly recommend them. I needed something right way for a meeting I had gotten at the last minute and they went out of their way to make sure it was ready in time. This is my go to store from now on.

In terms of customer service, it literally doesn’t get any better! I was referred to them by my business partner who’s worked with them for several years and I will never do business anywhere else ever again! From their flexibility and willingness to accommodate scheduling appointments virtually anytime of day/​night, in their showroom, at my office/​home, to their knowledge of fashion, quality of material, and what the vogue trends are, simply put, they deliver a service far superior to anything I’ve ever experienced! I’ve always been a fan of a family owned business and love the dynamic that they deliver! Furthermore, they have master taylor on staff! I can’t say enough about this company and the people who own it! You’d be doing yourself a disservice by not visiting them to allow them to demonstrate to you why they’ve been in business for 35+ years!

I have been extremely disappointed overall with my experience with this «tailor.»
I went in to ask if they could make a couple simple shirts. That’s when I found out that their tailors/​seamstresses are not in-​house, rather they are in New Jersey. So they sent them a picture of one of my shirts and they said they could do it. «Let’s just start with one,» they said. This shirt was your typical tailored-​fit ladies shirt with a zipper on the side so that it fits you well and you can zip it up after you put it on.
So on March 13, they measured me and Kristen helped me choose the fabric and the Harris accents. Then, I received an email from Kristen informing me that the fabric was out-​of-​stock and wouldn’t be in for a month. She said I could pick a different one, but I didn’t want to spend another hour in there so I just said I’d wait.
The shirt arrived on April 24 and you could have fit 3 of me inside it. Despite the fact that they measured me, it was ridiculously big — like a tent. They said they may have done that because they were too worried I wouldn’t be able to get it over my head because they didn’t know how to put the zipper on. Then, I noticed the Harris detail wasn’t done with the second fabric. I was told by Tom that I didn’t pay for that, when in fact I did. After I left, Kristen confirmed that I had paid for that. She said their local tailor would meet me in their store the next day and he would fix the shirt, then they’d send it back to the factory to get the Harris detail put on.
I met with the tailor who said it was so big that he would have to modify it inch by inch meaning several meetings with him as he changes one thing at a time. He measured me and assured me he’d fix it and it would look great. On May 8, I contacted Kristen to ask if the tailor had brought the shirt by. Instead of a response from her, I received a call from Tom telling me that the shirt was too difficult to fix and that I would not be happy with it. What? A month and a half later and several trips to the store and they decided for me that I would not be happy?! I was as patient as anyone could be and I really wanted that shirt. He said it would cost them too much in tailoring and just told me to come over so they could refund the cost I paid of $ 193 for the shirt.
There was no real explanation provided. It all seemed very shady. In the end, Kristen never even apologized — she had her father refund me and he was very short with me. I am extremely disappointed to have wasted so much time there. It is clear that they are not professionals and I would not recommend them to anyone. Instead, just find a shirt at the mall that fits. It’ll be far less hassle than dealing with this company.

When I met them I needed several outfits altered… they did a fabulous job. Then I learned their price points were very reasonable. I met with Kristen, who has spent a lot of time designing my outfits by scratch. I have been a client for several years and never hesitate to refer them. If you are looking for reassurance on Michael Thomas Clothiers, don’t hesitate.

I turned to Michael Thomas clothiers to make a suit for me to wear on my first day at a new job. I chose them over their competition because they were the only place that agreed to have a suit ready within four weeks, in time for my first day. This was my first-​ever experience purchasing anything other than an off-​the-​rack suit. Overall, I had a positive experience and would return again.
The Good:
1. Tom Comeau and his son did a thorough job fitting me for the suit (which of course, is their job). Since I was new to the whole process, I wasn’t exactly lightning quick in my decision-​making. They took time to explain the types of fabrics and colors that I could choose, and (again, as one would expect) made all the necessary measurements. I spent well over an hour at the initial measuring session, and never felt rushed.
2. During the whole process, I had a direct line to Tom on his cell phone, and was able to ask all the questions I needed. They are indeed a family operation and customers get all the benefits that this entails.
3. I paid $ 795 for the suit — from my research, I understand that this price is pretty competitive with other clothiers in the area. There were less expensive options at Michael Thomas, but I decided to go at this price range.
4. As promised, the suit came in just in time for me to wear at my first day on the job — in four weeks. I was pleased with it. It is stylish, modern, and fits me perfectly. Tom and his son came to the shop on a day on which it was otherwise closed to make sure the suit fit properly and to answer any questions I had.
Some things to be aware of:
I get the impression that (not surprisingly, considering this is Washington) the business caters to a professional crowd. Therefore, the default fashion suggestions you get here may lean towards the conservative. I am younger and wanted a more modern, slim-​fitting European look with snazzier lapels, etc., but something just conservative enough that I could pull it off at work. I had done a little bit of research online before I went into the store, and am glad I did. I was pretty confident in what I wanted, and Tom and his son happily ran with it (and gave me other helpful suggestions along the way). I would suggest that for others who are looking for a more modern stylish look, you do a little bit of legwork beforehand and get an idea of what you want.
Also: if you really need a piece of clothing on short notice for an important occasion, I would suggest taking advantage of the direct line to Tom and proactively check in with him periodically about the status. Ultimately, my suit came in right when promised, but it was more of a cliffhanger than I cared for. That said, my request was unusual, and at the end of the day they delivered. And that’s all that counts.
So: I got the suit I wanted at a reasonable price, with pretty personal service. I think anyone looking to have a suit made could choose Michael Thomas with confidence.

All well and good, but they don’t sew and use some crappy outsourced services to do so. Thus the actual «tailor» is not even on site doing his own measurements or fittings. This, and the fact that they use substandard tailors to begin with, yields pathetic results. They not only messed up a suit, but messed up other items I brought in for alterations — completely ruined one item.
The fact is that real sewing and tailoring is sadly becoming a lost art in the US, and all the «personal service» in the world cannot overcome this fundamental deficiency. Go to Europe and even small casual clothes stores will have on-​site people who can perform alterations far superior to what Michael Thomas «Custom» Clothiers can produce.
This at bottom should be a very simple business: find a true master tailor and the world will come running to your door. The trick is to find the talent. This place evidently has not come within light years of finding that master tailor. Instead, their business model is that that «consultation» and «service» compensate for pathetic tailoring. These are nice enough people, but only a rube will fall for the sizzle without the steak.

I am in the process of learning my options for upgrading my professional business attire. So far, my experience with this company has been superior to anything I’ve come across. The thing that appeals to me most is there ability to think outside the box when an obstacle presents itself. Come prepared to be impressed as they are more than up for the challenge.

This family-​owned business has the right idea — the service is outstanding, they have clothes in a variety of price ranges, and the quality of their product delivers. I have a suit from MTC that fits me better than I thought a suit could fit. In short, these guys know what they’re doing and they’re a pleasure to deal with.

I have been a long term client of Michael Thomas Clothiers. I can always count on Tom’s expertise: the measurements/​fittings have been precise, and his attention to detail has been second to none. The quality of the fabrics has exceeded my expectations. His son and daughter, Michael and Kristen, help in the process, as well. They detail the garments… and personally assist in the design of the suits. I could not be a more satisfied client, and I will continue to refer friends and family to Tom with complete confidence.
