Monkey’s Uncle

As any parent knows, the cost of children’s clothing can really add up. Everything is so itty-​bitty and adorable, and it is hard not to drop a small fortune on little booties and baby blazers and dresses. Monkey’s Uncle is a great consignment store where you can definitely find something for a child in your life (aged newborn to five years, anyways) at a very reasonable price.
What’s more, a lot of items are even new with tags! My first steal here was a Baby Gap bathing suit — with tags on, still — for $ 4.50. Everything here is in great condition and there are a wide range of brands here (everything from Carter’s to Janie and Jack). Like all consignment stores, the longer an item has been around, the lower the price will drop, which means there truly are some amazing deals here. There are also maternity clothes and a few baby gear items, as well.
The place is really baby friendly (stroller parking in the front!) and caters to parents. There is a nursing room and baby changing station upstairs, so you don’t have to worry about being rushed here. There is also a 7 day return policy, so if you get home and realize that corduroy coverall set doesn’t fit your bundle of joy, you can bring it on back. I love how considerate the owners are to have things like that!
Sadly, though, Monkey’s Uncle recently announced that they will be closing at the end of this year. I will be so bummed to lose this gem of a store, as I know many other parents in DC will be, as well. While they are still open for business, go in and check them out. (And you get a discount if you check in on your Unilocal app, too!)

The Uncles that run this shop are really helpful and friendly. They have a drop box for the DC Diaper Bank — bonus points to them for supporting the DCDB! The shop is small, one drawback, but they pack it full and I’ve almost always found what I was looking for. Also, they rent things that save buying things like pack n plays, travel bags, etc… Great place. Wonderful community members.

I went in for the first time yesterday. I overheard the salesman offering to other customers to give the lower price for anything about to be marked down. He barely made eye contact with me and did not offer not give me the lower price.
Too bad for him since I“m at Eastern Market nearly every week and have a baby at home.

Love this place. The owners are always helpful yet low-​key, and have a great sense of what will sell, whether name-​brand or not. I come every few weeks to consign my kids’ outgrown items, and always come away with one or two gems in the next size up (e.g., NWOT high-​end shoes, or a good basic layering piece).
I used to go to Wiggle Room which is quite a bit closer to where I live, but even though WR has expanded, the quality of their selection has declined. I now make the trek to M/​U to consign, as they recognize quality and are great at keeping the inventory fresh and streamlined.

This place is a consignment goldmine! I came to DC on a business trip and made a point to visit this shop to check out what they had for maternity clothes. I was not disappointed. They had a healthy selection of items in my size. I was able to get several items to wear at work and several beautiful casual items. I loved the fact that many of them were designer lines that fit well and were of good quality, like Pea in a Pod, Olian, and Japanese Weekend. Monkey’s Uncle also has a good system of offering a discount for the clothes that have been in the shop for over a month. This keeps their selection fresh and timely for the season. I highly recommend this gem for anyone looking for maternity items. I walked out with 7 items for about $ 90. Not bad!

What a fabulous little place! The best part? The customer service. The? owners are absolutely wonderful and kind and low-​pressure. Ask them a question or query and you never get that annoyed look or raised eyebrow… I’ve received gracious help and answers each time. They have a full range of seasonal outfits for infants through ?4 years old and even have 3 racks of maternity clothes (n my hard to find size too — score!). It’s well decorated given the small square footage — they make great use of the space. I’m not usually one for second-​hand stores, but it’s is airy and light and does not feel stuffy. Give it a look! Well worth the trip and they even have a return policy, which I think is great. Again — the customer service is top notch — a rarity these days in retail it seems, so for that alone I will continue to check it out for new treasures!

The owners are fantastic, and we always find the best things for our daughter! Almost her entire wardrobe is from here, and bought for prices much cheaper than newly store bought items. Everyone constantly comments on her cute clothes and asks where we got them. If there is something in particular that we’re looking for and they don’t have it at the time, the owners will make a note and then call us as soon as an item matching our description comes in!
They carry so much more than just kid’s and maternity clothes; G-​diapers, Kalencom Potette travel potties, Episencial baby skin care products, diaper bags, books, baby gear, etc. You can even rent equipement if you only need something for a short while.
Best thing to happen to DC parents since sliced bread!

We just moved here and discovered Monkey’s Uncle while shopping at Eastern Market on a busy Saturday morning. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that they rent strollers for only $ 5 per day (for a single.) I believe they have other travel stuff for rent like pack n’ plays and such. The owners are hands down some of the friendliest people we have ever met and take the time to help you find what you are looking for. Prices are not as low as some other area consignment stores, but they have a good selection of really cute items, including hair bows made by a local mom. There is a small area your kids can play with books and puzzles while you are shopping and plenty of room outside to park your stroller as you browse through the newly marked down items. I highly recommend checking out this gem!

The owner was friendly and helpful from the moment I walked into the store. He told me about his godson which I thought was absolutely adorable. They don’t have the hugest selection, but if you have the time to look you’ll surely find something that your child (read you) just can’t live with out!

This is our one stop baby shop.

I’ve wandered into Monkey’s Uncle at least four times before actually buying something, and I finally did this past weekend.
Service: The owners have always been friendly, and knowledgeable, each time I’ve visited, whether I bought something or not. I spoke with one of them about their gDiapers and he was more than willing to answer my questions and share his experience with them. The other owner gladly culled through pajamas I had overlooked to help me find my kid’s size.
Stuff: The selection is hit-​or-​miss, but since their inventory is constantly changing and they offer stuff for a variety of tastes, I can’t really complain. On a sunny Saturday morning, when everyone’s out walking their dogs and babies around Eastern Market, Monkey’s Uncle is liable to get cleaned out. I purchased an adorable pair of plaid canvas «shoes» for my growing daughter, and a couple of pajamas which are perfect for spring/​summer. They also carry maternity clothes, pregnancy books, and sometimes baby carriers, diaper bags, and other stuff you never knew you needed for your offspring.
I’ll definitely be back, possibly to consign some stuff. Note: they don’t carry toys.

Long story short: Skip this store and their rude staff and head to Wiggle Room for much better service and a much, much better selection.
I wanted to like this place but had a really terrible experience– both shopping and attempting to sell to the surprisingly rude owner.
I read the site 3 times to see if I needed an appointment but there was no mention of that so I dutifully gathered my things, rented a zipcar and drove 30 minutes to sell a few items. The owner curtly turned me away-«read the website! It says in big letters: APPOINTMENTS NEEDED!» I explained that I didn’t see that but he again, rudely, said «it’s there! Just read the site!» So after wasting half a day I came home and checked the site– there is, in fact, NOTHING on the site about appointments. I called to let them know– it turns out their web developer left and so they want to add mention of the appointments but can’t. You have to click on 2 different things and read their BLOG to see any mention of appointments.
Also, as a shop, Monkey’s Uncle has very few items so if you want to shop and have a selection this is not your store. When shopping consignment you expect to save, but the prices are relatively high for used items. After going to Monkey’s Uncle and finding almost nothing I needed I went to Target and realized their clothes were the same price and often less expensive than those at Monkey’s Uncle.
I called Wiggle Room in Bethesda and they were super nice, cheerful and helpful. They didn’t have appointments available but told me just to come in and they would help. And the selection at Wiggle Room is probably 10 times that of Monkey’s Uncle.

This place is awesome, and the owners are really friendly. I am not a mom, but I buy my friends who are mom’s a lot of baby clothing here. There’s a lot of really great quality clothing, for really low prices. I especially like it that they discount their items, depending on how long they’ve had it. I also have to say, I have found a couple items for myself (no, not in the maternity section!). I fit in kids sizes 14/​16, and sometimes I have found some really great clothes! The owner has laughed at me, but I consider myself lucky that I can fit into adult and kids clothing– I have so many choices :)

Wonderful shop. Great owners and a good selection for a shop so small.
They’re friendly and actually call you if the thing you’re awaiting arrives, and they also offer GDiapers.

Nice selection of good quality children’s clothing — my only complaint is that it is not larger. But the owners are about to triple the size of the shop — so problem solved :) They’ll be carrying gear as well, which is awesome news for all the thrifty mommies
