i work in an environment where i am surrounded with television news media from all over the world, broadcasting for all 24 hours of the day; CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, AP News Services, BBC, Aljazeera. All of these television news broadcast channels repeat the same three stories like an ipod stuck on replay… all… day… long.
i learn more about what is going on in the world in the 45 minute car ride to work while listening to NPR in the morning, than i do spending 8 — 10 hours at day at my place of work where i am surrounded by cable news channels.
my life long love of NPR is confirmed.

Uh, how do you review this place?
Security guards are nice… no one has pointed a gun at me… yet.
The area where DC Media Makers is held is nice… vending machine always works.
The carpet on the stairs is clean?

listen and/​or read. learn and be concerned. laugh until you cry. cry out in anger/​frustation/​empathy. find out where/​when/​how you can learn more, meet people, try/​taste/​read/​do something new, get involved, see your favorite band in concert, volunteer with an organization, feed your hobby habit, rally for or against a cause, and on and on and on.
gimme more, gimme more, more, MORE!!! L-​O-​V-​E NPR.

And so it is that I begin review number 800. Only review number 17 for NPR. Like supporters, there are far more listeners than reviewers.
I have had an ongoing love-like-disappointed-I’ll-take-you-back-like-I’ll-live-with-it sort of relationship with NPR for over 20 years.
Despite unhappiness at the more conservative turn they have taken in recent years I find myself listening time and again to programs such as Diane Rehm, Car Talk (Don’t review like my brother…), Science Friday, Fresh Air and All Things Considered.
Speaking of All Things Considered, isn’t this quite the egomaniacal name for a show? I know it has been on for a long time but have they really considered all things? I don’t think so. Shouldn’t they in fairness call themselves «Many Things Considered»? Or «Lots Of Things Considered»? «Some Things Considered»? Are they omnipotent? All-​knowing? I think not. I suspect that in the grand scheme of all that is knowable and subject to consideration, they have probably in fact only touched on a small fraction of things available for consideration. When you look at it that way don’t you think they should humbly call themselves perhaps «A Few Things Considered.»
I am glad we have NPR around. If not for NPR my radio time would be monopolized by fruitless scanning for new and interesting music and sports radio.

As you may know it’s tough getting through the day. That morning commute it tough and that’s where I turn to you for unbiased news from overnight. You have so many informative talk show hosts and very informative shows. Every time I listen to you I feel like my IQ goes up a few points.
The weekend is great too — you have fun shows like «Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me «and my favorite «Car Talk» to enlighten my afternoon errands on a Saturday.
What can I say — NPR with you in my life my life is complete.

Oh, NPR, how I love you so. I don’t know if I could survive my daily commute without listening to you. Thank you for filling me in on what’s going on in the world.

Hello, my name is Nick, and I have an addiction.
I lived sort of a messed up childhood. Every morning, my dad would drop me off at school and we would listed to morning edition. I had my first «Driveway Moment» before the sixth grade. I developed other bad habits too, including a mean addition to 60 minutes. I thought I could stop. I thought I was normal, but I wasn’t, I was a news junkie.
Soon, news wasn’t enough to satisfy me, I craved harder, wonkier stuff: Car Talk, This American Life, All Things Considered: Weekend Edition, Wait Wait Don’t Tell me, Talk of the Nation Science Friday, and… Radio Lab.
My addiction metastasized, I got my friends and loved ones, everyone I knew, into podcasts. People would find their car radio presets to include a public radio station, and in short order, they would be hooked too.
My highs may have been high, by my lows were abyssal. Pledge drives were the worst. They… they just… I can’t do this right now…

I hear people say, oh I couldn’t be addicted to NPR. Wrong!!! NPR doesn’t care who you are! I’ve seen rich, poor, Republican, Democrat, rural, urban, black, and white become addicted. The only way you could hate NPR is to never listen to it. Not even once.

Only neanderthals, neo-​cons, and Paris Hilton wannabes dislike NPR… of course I didn’t «get it» until I was probably 25, so I guess if you’re under 25, you’re forgiven for not totally «getting it.» However, dissing it is another story. And NPR has probably done that story.
Seriously, there are so many enlightening, cool, uplifting, heart-​rending, amazing, depressing, enraging, and simply funny things on NPR. For the hipper set, try «This American Life» or «Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me»…

I partially love NPR because they sign my paycheck, the other part of my love is because they actually have thoughtful, interesting stories and I don’t have to get hourly updates on how Lindsey Lohan is doing in rehab or how Paris Hiltons new house is. Don’t get my wrong I looooove me some trashy celebretard gossip, but it has NO place in the news. Its kinda nice to get a feel good sensation from your employers mission.

Until the radio got stolen out of my car for the 2^nd time, NPR was my co-​pilot.
I found the stories to be interesting, and engaging, and that it was a MUCH better news outlet for non-(as)biased news than say, a newspaper, magazine or the forsaken TV.
I’ve even sought out some of the bands I’ve heard on NPR… the way I was introduced to Pink Martini!
But I’m a huge dork for talk radio, so I like NPR… I like the stories and the news, without being hit over the head by a «spin zone» or whatever.
Minus one star for occasionally dull programming.

NPR is my secret guilty pleasure. I started tuning in around bed time because I noticed that radio voices help me relax. So in the DC area, I get a good dose of All Things Considered, As It Happens, Fresh Air, The Infinite Mind, and Soundprint.
Of those shows, I’m most impressed by the Infinite Mind. Every week, Dr. Goodwin (the host) explores a seemingly esoteric topic in psychology that manages to sustain my attention (all without the benefit of visuals), even in semi-​consciousness. It’s surprising how much you can learn in the moments before you drift off to sleep.
Lastly, I had the privilege of getting a private tour of NPR headquarters over the summer. I got to see everything from a live broadcast from inside a sound studio, to the news office, to the digital labs. Quite an amazing place.

Who doesn’t love NPR? Everyone who cares about anything worthy listens to NPR in San Francisco, and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s a bit of a snobby city when it comes to things full of thought and intellect. That’s MY city, and I’m proud of it! The first time I saw the huge NPR sign on the side of its building, I thought it was the coolest thing. But maybe I’m a geek.
Geek or not, you know what else is cool? They offer one-​hour public tours every Thursday morning at 11am:

A smooth-​talking, soothing, soft-​jazz radio version of current news and insightful aural pieces to enjoy. When I’m not in a daze in the morning, I’m about the Morning Edition during my commute to work (and All Things Considered on the way back).
I might not have the ability to tune into NPR live, but both
and iTunes have great streams and podcasts of their highlights. I love the website for their music artists features and their streams of 9:30 club shows. I’ve fallen in love with the Yeah yeah yeahs and Belle and Sebastian because of them.
I’m such a nerd for subscribing to their Podcasts. Story of the Day is always interesting and insightful and I don’t know what I’d do if I don’t keep track of Weekend Edition’s Sunday Puzzle with Will Shortz.
