The food is good and the bread is delicious but dang they are slow at making a sandwich.

The wait is too long for what it is. Apple turnover turned out to be cherry turnover and was not fresh. The breakfast sandwich was too much bread not enough taste. One star for a friendly cashier.

Love coming in here for a coffee, pastry and some quiet time before work. Nice seating with a view both inside & outside, as well as plenty of yummy goodies to choose from to start your day a little sweeter!

I came here to kill some time before meeting some friends for Brunch. When I walked in, there was one other person inside the store and two servers. They never once looked up and said hello. A minute later, someone else came in. He asked if I was in line and I said, loud enough for the attendants to hear me, «Not really sure what is going on here.» That’s when the said: Hello, how can I help you. 0 stars for common courtesy. I ordered a cup of hot chocolate and a cranberry pumpkin walnut raisin cake. The hot chocolate was actually warm. The cake/bread thing was incredibly dense and quite terrible. The attendants asked me if I liked it and I said it «it might taste better warmed.» She said: we don’t have microwaves here. I sat down for about 10 more minutes and as I got up to leave, I saw the other attendant using the microwave! Ridiculous! Don’t bother.

Great bread! Definitely recommend the Pesto loaf. To die for.

Very disappointed visit. I got coffee and coffee cake and total was $ 4.01. Since I was paying cash with a $ 10 bill I asked if they had a penny and the cashier laughed and gave me 99 cents to carry around instead. What small business does that? Unfortunately the coffee cake was dry, not nearly the same level of tastiness as either the muffins or breads that I normally request. Details count. If this was my first visit I would not be in a hurry to return. Since they are local I will give them another shot.

This place has the best cheddar chive biscuits I’ve ever eaten. They are huge and they are only $ 2. Why two stars then, you ask? Because I never know whether or not I will be able to get one. If I arrive too early(apparently 9:30 last Sunday was too early), I am told that it will be over an hour before they are ready. If I arrive too late(10AM one weekend), they are all gone. Also, they never seem to have enough staff so when they actually have biscuits and I have my exact $ 2 in hand and my pup tied up outside, often times I have to wait what feels like forever to get to the front of the line. I also wish they’d sell espresso and not just plain coffee.

First time here, even though I stayed in the Eastern Market for a while when I first moved to DC. This place is a little bit more than a bakery. It serves breakfast, soup sandwiches and dessert as well. First thing that is important to me is that the patio is dog friendly. The second great thing is that the bread is wonderful, it is more of the Artisan type of bread rather than what you get in a supermarket. The dessert is so so. The website said the place opens at 10 am on a Sunday, but it actually opens at 9 am on a Sunday, but the patio outside is open from 10 am. At 10 am the staff should unlock the table and bring out the chairs, but it did not happen today, because staff thinks it might rain ???(According to Accuweather on my phone, there is no forecast of rain). The bacon and egg breakfast sandwiches could have been toasted more. The Turkey sandwich(I chose all grain bread) was great. The blueberry pound cake I consumed was so so, it was moist alright, but slightly heavier than my liking. I have so far not find any cake better than Sticky Fingers in Columbia Heights! This place also serves coffee but no expresso. In any case, I definitely would go back to have the sandwiches. Friendly staff though.

This place is amazing. I’ve had two sandwiches from them and I will keep going back for more. I definitely recommend the breakfast sandwich. They don’t skimp on anything so you’ll leave full and happy.

Eeeh, I keep going back here hoping I will like it more because it is very cute, convenient and one of the only coffee/bakery shops that offers a full deli list of sandwiches and offers hot breakfast sandwiches in the area. Unfortunately it misses the mark in a few spots. The breakfast sandwiches are cooked in a toaster oven, so the eggs are not fresh(very noticeable), the bread they are offer for sandwiches is very dense and overpowering and their coffee tastes stale, and is not fresh brewed upon ordering. One thing I really do enjoy about Spring Mill Bread is their nice outdoor sitting area, it is a great place to spend the morning, and many people will bring their dogs to sit for awhile. Overall a decent place, but not worth making the trip out to unless it is convenient to go to as a local.

We stopped in here to grab something for breakfast over the next few days. Nothing starts my day off on a good note more so than a slice of bread and good cup of coffee. Spring Mill solved the first half of the equation. We bought a loaf of their apple after trying a sample and I know breakfast tomorrow will not disappoint. I see that several reviews have docked the place for service. I didn’t seem to have a problem, but then again, my order was simple: «You like the sample?» «Yes, I’ll definitely take a loaf.»

Updating my review because the service here is really going downhill… I always ask for room for cream in my coffee, and they fill it to the brim… Not a big deal, but it shows the staff isn’t listening to my order. And i constantly have to ask them for more milk or cream because the thermoses have never once had anything in them. One of the women there is particularly unprofessional and turned up some rap music at 9:00 am, which seemed a little inappropriate for the setting. Long story short: they need to step it up

I went in today right after brunch at a place across the way. It was around 2pm. The customer service here is pretty bad. I walked into the store and the girl standing behind the counter just stared at me. She never asked me if I needed help or had any questions. It was odd. I ordered the Rosemary shortbread which was really good but kind of overpriced. Not entirely sure that I would come here again. There’s another bread place(can’t remember the name) at Union Market with nicer people and better prices. If I had to guess there are probably bread vendors at Eastern Market(just a few blocks away) with better prices and nicer people as well. Happy eating!

Good food, but poor service. I don’t know why they bother asking for what kind of roll you want(white or wheat) when you always get a white one.

Can’t wait to go back and try more things on the menu. Stopped in for a late lunch: hummus sandwich with the peasant white bread was very filling, but needed a bit more salt. I wish I could combine the hummus and the cajun chicken sandwiches together… it would be perfect!

Fresh everything is the best way to describe Spring Mill. Best loaves of bread around town… one taste of their samples and you’ll never buy from the grocery store again. Remarkable service. Great sandwiches, soup, and baked treats.

Fresh breads, baked goods and testers! Spring Mill Bread is one of my favorite places to go while I’m cursing around Eastern Market. You need to stop in to Spring Mill Bread when you are in the area because you can taste just about everything before you buy it! Plus, are you really going to tell me you don’t like a free sample? Though I’ve only purchased the bread here, I will be back for a sandwich very soon. For every loaf of bread you purchase you will receive a stamp, after 12 loafs you get your next one free. With the thoughts of a free loaf of bread and samples, do you have a reason to pass Spring Mill Bread?

I’m only ranking it based on their whole wheat bread which I bought for sandwiches. The place is just a couple blocks south of Eastern Market Metro. Very nice storefront. Their inside can seat about 10 or 15 people. It’s an order at the counter place, no wait staff. I came to this bakery strictly to find some decent sandwich bread. My favorite currently is whole wheat, preferably honey whole wheat. The had plenty of options, and thankfully a whole wheat loaf. It’s fairly dense with a good consistency. Not much of a flavor, but I wouldn’t expect it to. The crust is nicely crisp, and the inner portion is soft and doughy. The freshness left a little to be desired. I asked if the bread was baked on site. It is not. Loaves are baked in Bethesda and transported to the Eastern Market location. Many of their small pastries are baked in house. I didn’t ask when the whole wheat was baked. I forgot. To be honest, I wasn’t impressed by the service. The guy behind the counter kind of looked at me funny when I asked about things being baked in house. He looked at me really funny when I asked to feel the bread. Anyway, this place is pretty decent for picking up a loaf of bread. They will, of course, slice it for you. In my opinion, it’s not as good as great harvest

Still loving Spring Mill Bread!!! Like, I love it a lot. There are some variations in batches so some batches aren’t as perfect as others. But I have a small margin of error on perfection so I’m okay with it. It’s still the best bakery, the best bread in DC, period. I’m really getting into purchasing their homemade flour, jams, and rolled oats for making other stuff. I love that they produce these ingredients with zero preservatives. None. Why can’t all bakeries be like this? I also like to try their other sweet goods. I love the ginger molasses cookies, the quick breads, and I especially love their cinnamon rolls and muffins. Seriously, if it’s baked, it will be really good! And I really wanted to mention that if you check their website(not Unilocal,it’s on their website) you can find out what breads they have in stock on a daily basis. For instance, I love the Wheat Bread, but was repeatedly getting it confused with Honey Wheat(which I also love, but isn’t always good for sandwiches). Using their online bread menu, you can plan out what you’d like to pick up. I wish I’d discovered that sooner. Although they have some standard breads that are available daily, some are only available a couple days per week, and you may not want to miss out on a flavor that is truly special. For me, I’m still trying to figure out the difference between cinnamon twirl and cinnamon swirl. But hey, I’m happy they keep it interesting, handmade, the way a bakery should be. The service here still sucks. It’s really bad. They just don’t have enough people, or the people aren’t very good, or they are mismanaged. I don’t really care. Their food is actually better than anyone else in the entire area. I’ve really never had yeast breads this good before, anywhere except home. Also, I’ve seen other reviewers talking about coming here for coffee. Okay I get it, you want coffee to go with your breakfast sandwich. But seriously, you are making a big mistake since the best coffee shop in the city is one block away on 7th(peregrine). Really, you shouldn’t come here for coffee.
