Taylor & York Salon

Loved this salon! The stylists are so fun and friendly, and the location is right down from the metro. I chopped off quite a bit of my hair after my wedding, but I love it! I have gotten so many compliments, and the before/​after photo attached got more Facebook likes than my bridal portrait!

I had my first experience at Taylor & York today. I purchased a LivingSocial and scheduled an appointment. The receptionist was courteous in scheduling my appointment, and called the day before to confirm. Then, called back to explain the parking situation was limited (since we just had snow).
When I arrived, I was greeted and taken to the back where the receptionist hung my coat and gave me a cape. She then asked me if I wanted something to drink and got me a tea with honey.
Shannon was my stylist and she offered great recommendations when I told her what I was looking for. Conversation, which can be difficult with a new stylist, was very easy, and the conversation flowed. I was particularly impressed with my blow out. Shannon definitely took her time and the result is wonderful!
I recently moved back into the city and have been looking for a good salon and stylist, and I think that I found it!

I had my first experience here today and I am so looking forward to coming back! From the receptionist being warm and welcoming, to the overall friendly vibe of this salon, I felt completely at ease chopping off around 8 inches of hair.
Shannon was my stylist and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of my haircut. She was very thorough and took her time with my hair after carefully listening to what I wanted to do.
If you get the chance to come here, you won’t regret it!

I am sooooo long over due posting my Taylor & York review. This salon is truly a Godsend. Ashleigh and her team are phenomenal. They are very skilled and knowledgeable in their craft, very curteous and professional. They go above to make the customer’s experience an amazing one.
I was recommended to Ashleigh and her team several years ago to seek help in correcting a color job that didn’t quite go so well. Nervous and unsure if anything could be done to make me feel whole again, Ashleigh assured me that there was definitely hope and she had such a calm soothing demeanor that surprisingly put all my fears to rest. Needless to say, she made me whole again. Since then I have trusted Ashleigh and her team with all of my major (and some not so major) haircare needs hands down.
The salon, located in DC’s Shaw neighborhood, is beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. There is limited parking so I would recommend taking Metro, which is located just a block away.
Respectful of the customer’s time, every effort is made to get you in and out within a timely manner without sacrificing quality. They set a very high standard that I hope other salons will follow. I truly appreciate this establishment.

Everyone is SO nice in this salon. They really take their time on each customer and make sure everyone is comfortable. Shannon did my hair and she did a fabulous job. I will definitely be going back there for my next cut!

After trying Taylor and York this afternoon I see why their reviews are so high! What a lovely and chic establishment. Customer service is also superb!!! (I am so big on this) Immediately upon entering I was taken back to get my drape and then asked if I would like water, coffee etc. Everyone was so professional and friendly! My stylist Shannon (so cute) was very friendly and really took the time to talk with me about my hair history. She brought life back to my hair Love love my style and cut. I have already booked my next appt. Just when you think it couldn’t get any better… the entire process was 2 hours! And that was with a real hair-​cut. In and out, I love it! I only wish I had found this place sooner. My hair would have been so much happier… but I think it’s pretty pleased with me now lol

I can’t say enough good things about Taylor and York:
— Customer Service — If they’re running late they’ll call you, lots of flexibility. I told them I was going to do some work and they brought out a computer stand for me. Everyone is so nice.
— Atmosphere — Really great décor. Comfy couches. Relaxing reading and music.
— Haircut — I’ve gotten two haircuts here and every time I walk away thinking that this is the best haircut I’ve ever gotten. Exactly what I wanted and it looks really great. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments.

My first experience at Taylor & York was amazing! Shannon turned my dark brown, curly hair blonde and I couldn’t love it more! She took the time to understand exactly what I wanted and explained the entire process to me step by step as she went through it. My hair is still soft and my curls are intact — besides feeling a tiny bit dryer than before (which is expected when bleaching hair) it is as healthy as ever! The salon was clean and bright, and everyone working there had smiles on their faces. I’d recommend this salon to anyone looking to color their hair, especially curly girls and guys! I’m so glad to have found such a great salon near me.

Had a fantastic first experience here yesterday. Like many of the reviewers here, I am a recent transplant to the area. The salon and stylist, Shannon, were recommended. I was nervous about trusting my head to the charge of someone new but Shannon rocks! She spent the time understanding my needs, lifestyle, style preferences AND took the time to educate me on how to care for and protect my hair. It doesn’t get any better than that. I’ve found the right place! I love my hair, beautiful relaxer and trim. All smiles here. :)

This is literally the best haircut I’ve had in DC since moving here 4.5 years ago. I had Shannon cut and style my hair, and I finally found what I was looking for– someone who listens to you and gives you what you ask for. She was efficient, professional, and terrific. She gave me a flawless, cute look in an hour. Highly recommend this place! Oh, and I got the Living Social for a haircut and blowout, and usually with Living Social or Groupon, you get terrible service, since the venues seem to hate Groupon. But she could not have been any nicer and gladly accepted it.

Ashleigh, Shannon, David et al are all spectacular. My hair ALWAYS looks great and has never felt better! The salon is beautiful, convenient and always on time. I’m a huge fan and would recommend to anyone.

I recently relocated to the area for a new job… and my search for anew stylist and salon began. I found Taylor and York through Gilt City, and thought I would give it a try. I am so relieved and thrilled that I did.
Misha (I may be spelling this incorrectly — sorry) is the receptionist, she is lovely. She is very welcoming and polite.
Shannon did my hair and was great. Not only did she listen to me when we chatted about what i wanted to do, she listened to me and the cut she gave me is great!
I found my stylist and salon!
Now, if only the served wine or prosecco… ;)

The staff is nice. However, they left me unattended for 45 minutes by the shampoo area. I understand that they were running late with their appointments and needed to stall. I figured that is probably why the conditioning mask was left on my head longer than most would be left but 45 minutes for a shampoo, conditioner and hair mask is RIDICULOUS. Just be honest and give me a magazine to read in the waiting area. Let me sit up so I can be on my phone. To lay with your head back in that position and for that long is painful. I just wanted a trim and for my hair to be thinned out. My hair was butchered. It was so ugly after that I just kept it up in a bun for two months until I could see my usual stylist back in NYC. She didn’t just trim it, she cut it into a new style that looked like a flashback into the 90s. I looked like a soccer mom. Wouldn’t go back and wouldn’t recommend.

Finding Ashleigh when I moved to DC (about 5 years ago) was the absolute best. Hair health — check; styling and cutting — check; professionalism — double check. Most important check — she understands that time is important and does not keep her clients waiting unnecessarily.
She transitioned me from a weave to the healthiest hair that I have had in years (edges and all). To top it all off, she has one of the best fashion libraries I have ever had the pleasure of perusing at a salon.
She also has the BEST staff. Another stylist at the salon Shannon, was previously Ashleigh’s assistant. She was the best assistant and is an excellent, professional stylist. I have no worries if Ashleigh is unavailable (which is rare) because Shannon does such great work herself.
The other stylists in the salon, David and Beau are great and the receptionist is always friendly and available to help you book appointments.
Do yourself a favor and go visit Taylor and York Salon.
P. S. Ashleigh also created the most wonderful and divine wedding hairstlye for me. I truly cannot say enough good things about her.

This salon has the worst customer service ever. I, like one of the other reviewers below, bought a voucher from Gilt a couple weeks ago and called them today to set up a hair cut. They said it would be over a month to get an appointment to have my hair cut. I explained my voucher would have expired by then and the receptionist responded that it is not her fault and I should have called sooner. I then asked to speak to a manager and she said I could email the salon if I wanted to but that was it. How can they offer a coupon (which I paid 60 dollars for) and then tell me they can’t fit me in for a month. I will never go back to this salon and I will make sure to tell anyone who thinks to go there not to. I am honestly disgusted by their customer service and this is the first Unilocal review I have ever written.

I had a wonderful experience at Taylor & York Salon. It is a small, unassuming salon with great customer service, friendly staff, and fantastic stylists. Ashleigh cut and styled my hair, and I received many compliments that evening and next day. Everything about the salon is welcoming, down to the the friendliness of the other stylists and patrons. It really feels like a neighborhood gathering place with none of the prima donna attitude you might find in other salons! :) Thank you Ashleigh and the rest of the über-​friendly staff. I will be back!

Urgh. 3.5. Can that be a thing? Had to knock a few stars off, and I hate that. Ambiance? Gorge. Scissor skills? On point. Non-​ratchedness? Check. Time? Nope to the nope, nope and nope. I was there for 4+ hours! My appointment was at 2 something and I didn’t leave until they closed… around 7PM. It was a Wednesday, so it was fairly slow. Clients came and went and I was still in the chair. David was my stylist and he was excellent in terms of being cordial but not overly chatty, fairly apologetic for the time spent under the dryer while he finished other patrons and his amazing scissor skills. I just don’t understand the issue with getting people in and out. I went all in and had my 2^nd big chop after 4+ years natural, which meant I had less than 3 inches of hair to work with (and that was just in the front since I got it tapered, the back was less than a half an inch) after all was said and done.
As background, I have extremely kinky, 4b/​c (mostly c) hair. I was in a little over 2 months ago. They use Devacurl products. I was under the dryer FOREVER, I guess seeing what kind of curly magic the mousse would make. None… there’s not a mousse in the world that makes kinky strands the circumference of a clicker pen coil, curly. But nice try and it was fairly moisturizing. They do mostly natural hair, but I got the sense that most customers get it straightened via blowout. They also pushed Keratin straightening (not a hard sell, but it was there) which I firmly declined. I got (and still get) lots of positive compliments on my tapered cut. I would probably recommend if a natural friend wanted a good blow out or big chop… I doubt I personally would come back, the whole reason I went natural was too avoid salons that don’t value their customer’s time. I also miss my strands (but not the detangling) so I’m growing the cut out.
The receptionist is a real gem. She is wonderfully engaging and I saw her chatting it up with frequent flyer clients, so naturally! She was asking about their kids, and remembered small details about their life. She is so sweet!
Oh and also, bring cash. They do not accept tips via cc, which is always annoying.

Really cool hair salon. Nice music. And with the coffee and salt caramel muffin to begin with, they could shear me for all I care. Yet they didn’t and Ashley (the owner) gave me a really nice haircut.
Might need to bleach my hair or make it purple to get more of those muffins too…

Ashleigh is amazing. I always leave there with a fabulous cut. Service is awesome. No overcrowding or long waits. I would highly recommend Ashleigh!

Ashleigh gives you that hair where you (or your man) will not want to stop touching it. Never fails, women pass me on the street and run back to get the details on who does my hair all the time. In addition to styling long tresses, this girl has got some edge, she does amazing razor sharp cuts all the way to the classy timeless bob. The look is always natural whether its your hair or extensions, the curls stay locked in so at night you can wrap your hair or simply rest on a satin covered pillow case.
I must say PERFECT HAIR IS ADDICTIVE, so you may be subject to start coming more often than you would imagine.
Note-​All hair types are welcome as well as male hair styling. Closest metro stop is Shaw Howard U– 7^th St exit. If your driving the street parking in this area is awesome !
