Specialties

We make sure our treats have a home baked feel, using only the freshest ingredients and baking everything from scratch. We never take short cuts by using cake mixes or ready-​made frostings because anything mass-​produced lacks the love that home-​style baking is known for.

From brownies and lemon bars, to various cupcakes, cheesecakes, pies, cookies and layered cakes, there is something for everyone! Call or just stop-​in. All orders are for pick-​up only.

History

Established in 2007.

Upon graduating from New York’s Institute of Culinary Education I returned to our family’s hometown of Amman, Jordan & with the help of my father & brother opened my very first Sugar Daddy’s in 2007. We franchised the same to Beirut & Dubai then opened The CakeRoom in DC as a sister company due to the name «Sugar Daddy’s» not being available.

Born and raised in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, I attended boarding school in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, then college at William and Mary with a degree in Marketing. I returned to Saudi Arabia to work in the brand management department of Unilever but was itching to get out and do my own thing. I always had a knack for baking so one day decided to hone my skills by attending Culinary School in New York City at the renowned Institute of Culinary Education. I then returned to my hometown of Amman, Jordan to open my very first bakery then later franchised to Beirut, Lebanon and Dubai. After having been in the region for 6 years I again got the travel bug and felt like I should move back to the US where I had spent my formative years. While having coffee with two of my friends and now business partners, I was encouraged to bring my small chain of shops to the US and so I decided on Washington, DC, as my first stop having gone to college just two hours south and having visited for years.

Service was weird… the women was one of the most «off» people i’ve met. I can’t explain it but she was literally singing while I was asking her questions, and if you asked for a recommendation she replied very curtly. It was just weird. But for the sweets!
Smores Cookie — huge, fresh and incredible. It was a bit too chocolately and didn’t have marshmallows but if you like chocolate you’ll love this
Strawberry Short Cake — it could have been a bit more fresh or moist, but it was still very very good. It had such sweet and yummy frosting with strawberries mixed in, and it was a perfect compliment to the cake. Not too much, but just right.

I knew I could find at least one nice cake shop similar to my favorite cake shop at home in RI. The chocolate cake here is very good. The red velvet was ok but the frosting was too sweet. Cute atmosphere, nice concept. I had hoped to return before my trip ended but did not have time, next time.

My stock went through the roof the moment everyone at the birthday party took their first bites of the lemon cake I had brought along from The Cakeroom. At the end of the evening, people were actually fighting over who got to take the leftovers. I made a case that half should go to the birthday girl and half to the guy who bought it. I lost. :-\

It has been a bit since we were here last and happened upon it while in town with friends. It is a decent walk from U-​Street corridor where we were eating, but we wanted some dessert.
The strawberry shortcake was very good. Moist, fluffy, and lots of icing. The cupcakes were so-​so for DC. The cupcake game is so fierce here it is hard to compete.
Service is easy enough and for a speciality dessert place you can’t go wrong in the area. Just don’t expect to make this a specific visit. Just a decent happenstance location when you have a sweet tooth.

This place is fantastic! Very cute and a great place to grab some coffee, or even better, a cupcake and get some work done.
Met a friend for a quick treat and it did not disappoint! The cupcakes and nutella cheesecake were awesome!
I’ve also had a birthday cake from here that was both adorable and delicious.

The Cakeroom is this super cute place that sells a variety of deserts, cakes, and coffee with a seating area upstairs. Customizable orders upon request, and free cookie with any purchase if you check in via Unilocal.Conveniently located around restaurants on Florida Avenue in Adams Morgan.
This place has been on my list to go to for a while. I was somewhat unimpressed with the service and the system of ordering. Also, not their fault, but I got a bad stomach ache after from all the dairy I had #LactoseIntolerance.
I tried a few things of theirs:
(1) Nutella Cheesecake
(2) Brownie
(3) Chocolate Chip Cookie
(4) Mocha
The Nutella Cheesecake was everything you’d want in a slice of Nutella cheesecake. It was dense, but not too dense. Creamy, but not too creamy. Sweet, but not too sweet. Also, not to heavy.
The brownie was also really good. I only had a small bite of it but it was enough to want it again.
The chocolate chip cookie was free so it didn’t really have to be that great for me to be glad I got it, but I took the last one and the girl behind me seemed really upset about it. I ate it later and was glad I did.
The mocha tasted a bit like a hot chocolate, but I guess that’s what it somewhat is. Too much dairy for me but delicious nonetheless.
The reason for my mediocre review is because of the service. I thought that at a place like this everyone would be super happy and friendly but I felt kind of pushed to the side. I know they were busy and there was a super long line but still didn’t feel like my order mattered.
I look forward to trying their cupcakes, so I will most likely be back.

What happens when you combine scrumptious baked goods with shabby chic décor? You get the most charming lounge spot in DC! Every detail of this place from the furniture to the wall paper to the chandelier hanging from the ceiling to the frames for the menus bring you out of the busy, noisy and bustling DC to the quiet, picturesque and tranquil countryside.
We arrived around 9 pm at night and the place was packed. Most of the baked goods were already gone! So we ordered all the pretty little treats that were left. We ordered a slice of the red velvet cake, strawberries n cream cupcake, three berry pie, and a ton of cookies for free with our cool Unilocal check ins! My favorites were definitely the strawberries n cream cupcake and the smores cookie! The quality of the baked goods were definitely there and nothing can compare to lounging in our little countryside getaway and sipping on milk and tea with delectable desserts.

Adorable place. I love it. I used to live in the neighborhood and it was my secret reading place. I still visit occasionally. Order a coffee and dessert and hideaway upstairs reading for hours.
Super friendly staff and yummy desserts. I’ve had the date cake (one of my favs, without any caramel drizzle added!), carrot cake and their cupcakes are good.
Coffee is okay, but it’s definitely a great bakery.

I only tasted one cupcake flavor and it was pretty much a standard cupcake.
The location is soooo cute though, it set up like a cute little tea party room. The best part of the visit was guy that helped us he was awesome. So if your ever thinking of stopping in ask for Jabari, he will answer all your questions and give you an enjoyable experience to say the least.

I do not get why this place has any good reviews. Clearly their product and service is unreliable.
Come for the mediocre desserts and sullen hipster counter person. Waited several minutes for this gal to come back from wherever she was. All the while staring at the mostly picked over dessert case.
Hope the food safety issues don’t bother you. Don’t put your street clothes and back packs on food prep surfaces please. This one was actually touching the cup cakes. People put backpacks on the floor. In bathrooms. Stop it.
And do the dishes will you? The floor doesn’t like it’s been swept this week, including the broken coffee cup (s) behind the counter. We nearly cut ourselves on the broken glass table top.

I was in the area and there’s nowhere I go without Unilocaling for a bakery :)
The Cakeroom is hard to miss with its dark pink (sorry not the best w colors) exterior. Their inside super cute décor made me feel like in a story about dessert lol
I got their banana toffee and apricot bar. Toffee bar consisted of graham cracker crumbs on the bottoms, caramel and banana slices — because of the bananas getting ripe real quick, I suggest eating the toffee as soon as you get it :)
The apricot bat was delicious. It was very soft even after a day in the fridge and had a subtle taste of apricot — just like I like it.
I guess it’s a good thing I don’t live close to it, otherwise I would be there all the time.

Cookie? Cake? Lemon bar? Toooooo many choices! Oh and yes. They do have cupcakes. But as the guy behind the counter says to me… You don’t look like a cupcake girl! Lol. Nope. I wanted more!!!
So depending on what time of day you get there… May all the cakes will be out. And they do look amazing! When i was there the cheesecakes were not ready yet. I only got a description of them… Which wasn’t fair since i couldn’t get them. Really, i just became overwhelmed and asked for recommendations. And yes. They were delicious recommendations. I ended up with a lemon bar, smores cookie, and a cappuccino cookie. Which is the best??? Cappuccino cookie! And is does give you a wake up boost. Wired for a morning… Then the smores cookie. Yum! And then the lemon bar. A tad on the sweet side.
So good… A get stop if you’re strolling by…

I reached out to The Cakeroom when I was looking to send a custom cake to my husband’s office to celebrate their one year anniversary. The staff was friendly and helpful, answered my many questions, and reassured me that they would deliver a beautiful and delicious cake, in time.
I ordered a vanilla cake with Oreo filling and frosting, and a custom (fondant?) photo printed on top of the cake. Fadi and his staff were a pleasure to do business with and I vow to continue to support this wonderful business!

Found this place through Unilocal.Made a quick stop for some cupcakes & coffee.
German chocolate cupcake– i love it! It has coconut, nuts & cream. It kinda taste like a flan with all those toppings.
Hot chocolate cupcake– the cream on the top taste okay. By its name hot chocolate its not what I expected. This cupcake taste semilar to any regular cupcake I have tried before.
Key lime cheesecake– a little sour & sweet. Those two flavor combines together makes every bite perfect!
I noticed that this place get busy & packed but theirs just 1 lady working that day I came & shes doing a great job catching up to every order! I’m just really impressed how she can move & attend to every customer like that. Shes answering the phone while taking orders in the shop. Shes a great worker!

Walked in for coffee. Left with a sweet tooth completely satisfied.
Before I dive into the sweets, i must say this place is absolutely adorable. It has a country chic style with rooster wall paper and fancy old couches upstairs. The upstairs has plenty of seating, which makes it a prime place to study/​work while digging into a slice of their fluffy cakes. Cake for breakfast, right?
So the sweets… omg mouth watering. I’m not a big dessert person, but when I come across a place like cakeroom, I am tempted. They have a Unilocal offer for a free cookie. All their cookies looked delicious, like their cranberry oatmeal or nutella, but the gingersnap was calling my name.
I’m usually picky about my desserts (too sweet, too dry, not enough sugar, etc.) but this cookie was HEAVENLY. Perfectly gooey and bursting with flavor in every bite. It was everything i could ever want in a cookie.
If their cookies were this good, i now cannot imagine how delicious their cakes would be.

Such a sweet place to be. From a sea of options, you have pie, cakes, cupcakes and cookies to choose from. Not sure what to get? Then try the banana toffee pie. It’s small enough to share with one other person or you can have it all for yourself. It starts with a graham cracker bottom filled with banana toffee cream and topped with heaven. The banoffee is what they’re known for, so you gotta get it! Then check out the upstairs and enjoy your goodies while feeling like you’re in a chapter of «The Baby Sitter’s Club» having tea.

Came to visit this place as I am planning my sister’s bridal shower! Upstairs is a perfect area for about 15 people.

Above the café and desserts they have a private area to seat or to be reserved for parties. It is about $ 100 an hr and its $ 8 a head for every person.
They can make custom cakes, cupcakes, squares, cookies, etc! The staff here is very friendly and accommodating. I have yet to host the event yet as it is in March so I will give further details later!

The Cakeroom is my neighborhood sweet shop. It’s got a hella-​large selection of just about every dessert you could ask for. I’m not a huge cupcake person, but I’ve overheard patrons wishing their cupcakes were a liiiiittle larger to match their $ pricetag.
I generally opt for the Nutella-​anything. Nutella cookies, Nutella cake, Nutella… well, anything. They also have freshly-​brewed coffee, which pairs quite nicely with the entire menu.
One thing I particularly enjoy is that they offer free, unlimited water by the coffee-​fixins’ bar. I also like that they have bathrooms on both floors. They have music playing in each of those bathrooms but not really in the open areas, which is a little odd. The décor is on point, too.

I have the sweetest tooth — always have a stomach for sweets, always polish my dessert plates… Then came this one time I threw out cupcakes…
My husband and I came to pick up belly app offer — 3 free cupcakes per person. I went with date, lemon lavender, and strawberry and cream. My husband went with Oreo, tiramisu, and salted caramel. At first glance, they were tiny for $ 2.75! The icing to cake ratio was 1.5 to 1. The actual size of cupcakes themselves reminded me of bitesized muffin (in those big clear containers from Costco). One bite and it’s gone!
Date — nothing date about it. There were a few pieces of chopped walnut sprinkled on top. Could have called this cupcake walnut and I would never have figured it has date in it.
Strawberry and cream — too sweet for my taste. I did enjoy the pieces of fresh strawberry folded into the frosting. Gave it a less artificial taste.
Lavender lemon — the driest, stalest cupcake one can find. I spat my first bite and threw the rest out.
Thank goodness I was getting them for free. I could not stop staring at those people in line actually paying full price for them. The shop itself is adorably decorated and the staffs were super friendly. But I came for cupcakes and they didn’t worth the freebie trek for me.

The Cakeroom is your Southern icing to DC’s dessert charm.
You can’t get past the décor. It’s gorgeous inside! From the shabby chic furnitures, to the country floral textiles, you will feel like it’s your gran gran baking away in the kitchen.
A long case full of cupcakes will greet you as you walk in, and right above it, cases of cookies and other delights. Make your pick. Check in via Unilocal and get a free cookie ($ 3.50 value — this is insane!)
You will not be disappointed in the quality of the baked goods. The cake is so moist! It runs on the sweet side, but aren’t all cupcakes that way? The icing is butter based, so expect a bit of oiliness there, but not too overwhelming either. It’s not too sweet! Loving every bite that I actually finished an entire cupcake — a rarity in most cases.
The service is quick. The lady who was helping us was zipping through the cases!
We saw a few people picking up their custom cake orders and took a peek at some of them. The cakes look really nice! And the customers all looked pretty happy with their order — witnessing that was a good assurance. Perhaps we will keep an eye on this bakery for our next cake order.
Come inside, relax, unwind, and enjoy every bit of charm this spot can offer. There’s also additional loft seating upstairs.
