The President Woodrow Wilson House

I love history and President Woodrow Wilson is one of my all time favorite presidents. I was so excited to come here and see this quaint museum.
The tour was so much fun because history is FUN! Our tour guide was very informative and willing to answer questions we had. I liked that they scheduled groups of people in a tour session to avoid overcrowding in one area.

Loved this place. A hidden gem in DC. They show you really cool artifacts such as personal clothes and items the Wilsons used during that era. It was a great experience.

This is a fun tour! If you’re interested in presidential history you should give this a visit. Staff here are very friendly. I learned new information about President Wilson and his wife (first female President), Edith Wilson.
It’s within walking distance of the Marriott Wardman Park and Omni hotels, near many embassies.

We held our wedding in the garden last weekend — absolutely beautiful! Sarah — and the rest of the WWH staff — were fantastic to work with. They were accommodating and helped our wedding go off without a hitch. It was truly a perfect day and we can’t thank them enough. Our guests LOVED the house and the gardens. We’d highly recommend them as a ceremony location for a DC wedding.

Great and informative tour. One of the better I’ve experienced.
The tour starts out with a 15 min video and then you’re taken on a tour of the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd floors. Most of the artifacts are original and placed where they would be when the Wilsons were living there (albeit for a few paintings and books). Even the very bed Wilson passed in. Crazy. The house is extremely well maintained, feels like you stepped back in time.
Our tour guide, Samantha, knew her stuff. From the smallest artifact, she had the background info on every square inch of the house.
Parking isn’t terrible, we found free street parking within a block of the house without having to double loop.
Plan on spending about an hour or so here. Photos are allowed, too!

Big gorgeous house, beautifully maintained and clean. The place is 90% the way it was when Woodrow Wilson lived there. The visit starts with a short film about the life of Woodrow Wilson. Followed by a house tour. Our tour guide, Mary Kay, was excellent — engaging and incredibly knowledgeable; she made the tour even more enjoyable.
We were among a good sized group of visitors of all ages and types, though mostly 20 – 30 year olds.
Well worth it, would go again.

Despite the ghastly July heat in the DC area, this house was an oasis in the dessert (SP?) as far as I was concerned. Set in the neighborhood of the embassies, the blast of air conditioned air that greeted us as we entered the house was most welcome.
Our tour took place right away. This is the last house that President Woodrow Wilson lived in after he served as President. His second wife preserved lots of material and furniture and clothes and pretty much left the house as it was at the end of Woodrow’s life.
The tour was interesting and our tour guide very knowledgable about Woodrow and his life …
We saw the film on Woodrow at the end of our tour as we arrived a bit late to see it at the beginning (when we were supposed to).
But the people who work here are very very nice and very kind and helpful.
This is a bit off the beaten path of most DC tourist areas but well worth going to.

I bought a Groupon for this place and then completely forgot all about it until I got an email reminder to use my Groupon. I had been wanting to visit here for a while now and never got around to it. When I saw the deal advertised on Groupon, it was too good to pass up and it would finally force me to go.
The house is located in the mist of the embassies and it is the one with the American flag hanging out front. Everything in the house is original with the exception of the books. There are a few books on display that were written by President Wilson, but I was told by the tour guide that other than those set of books, all of his books are now at the Library of Congress.
The house was decorated as how it was when President Wilson lived there during the last 3 years of his life. Mrs. Wilson did some upgrade after the President passed, but those upgrades were replaced after her death. It was decorated with many beautiful gifts that the President and his wife received during his time in the White House.
The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. She moved the tour along at the pace of the visitors and we had many questions. She happily answered them all!
Coincidentally, my son was working on his school project on famous Virginians and he person that he happened to pick for his project his President Wilson. He learned a lot from this trip that he will be able to use for his school project. As a matter of fact, I learned from him that President Wilson first name is Thomas. As I was verifying that through Wikipedia, I also learned that President Coolidge first name is John. I guess alliterating names sound better when running a campaign.

Stopped by yesterday and used our Groupon for admission. What an amazing home! The preservation is fantastic. The tour staff was SO friendly. There was a wedding in the back outdoor space going on but it didn’t impede on our tour, nor us on the wedding guests. I would suggest everyone put this on their to-​do list of DC places to visit!

This is a beautifully kept museum with a very knowledgeable staff. Because the Wilsons belonged to an era that emphasized soft lighting and rich ornamentation, the rooms are lovely, and the house doubles as a very elegant and intimate venue for parties, one in which each piece of décor carries huge historical import. One of my favorite items from my last visit: Wilson’s key to the City of London, which apparently gave him the right to graze his sheep in Hyde Park.

Great museum in DC with all authentic furniture and furnishings. I think this was the 4^th event I have been to there. The annual party there is a lot of fun! Great band, snobby hordurves and great cocktails. This year, the booze is a local vodka from Maryland. Highly recommended event every year as everyone dresses up in period costumes!

Went here for a DCAR (DC Association of Realtors) event in December. Lovely venue to have a catured event. Nice staff and loved seeing the old rooms of our late president.

A charming, inexpensive way to spend an hour in DC when you’ve got an hour to kill. This is the home he retired to after leaving the presidency; he’s the only president to remain in DC after holding office. It’s a nice blend of history and looking at life in the early 20s.
Street parking was the easiest I’ve ever experienced in DC; don’t hesitate to drive because it’s not near Metro. We went on a Saturday around 11AM and were shocked you could actually park in front!
You of course will learn plenty of history while you’re there. It comes with the territory. But there are some neat, quirky things in there you wouldn’t expect like the microphone Wilson used in the first national radio broadcast and a bizarre (read: scary) stimulation kit his nurse used on him during his therapy for his stroke. I’m a nurse and I didn’t recognize it at all, thank goodness.
The Woodrow Wilson House is having a Speak Easy event on February 12. If only I weren’t pregnant…
All in all, a good place. Not suitable for young children or those unable to climb stairs. I’m giving it 4.5 stars only because I thought LBJ’s Ranch (outside of Austin, TX) was better.

We got married here this past May and it was amazing. Most of our guests were from out of town so we wanted a venue that brought a little bit of DC to them– what better place than the house of one of our country’s presidents! The house was open during the reception with house staff there to give tours. The house itself is really cool– and the staff is really knowledgeable. The garden out back is breathtaking– our guests from DC said they felt like they weren’t in the city anymore. It was like our own secret garden wedding. The venue coordinator, Sarah was such a pleasure to work with. They are very easy to work with, responsive, and seem to really enjoy the history of the house. We went on so many tours with parents and friends in preparation for the wedding and learned something new every time! Definitely recommend for tourists!

For DC being a place where you automatically think «presidents,» there aren’t many places where you can really interact with any of them. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good memorial/​monument/​photo op on Pennsylvania Ave. But if you want to get a look into the actual life of one of them, go here.
When you stroll down S street (super short walk from Dupont Circle metro stop!) and ring the doorbell of the Woodrow Wilson House, you really feel as if you’ve stepped back in time almost a century, to the 1920’s. After a short intro video, your guide takes you through all 3 stories of the house, which are still set up to feel as if Wilson and his wife Edith live there.
The house is filled with their belongings– Wilson’s massive book collection (only president with a PhD!), gifts presented to him (ranging from framed sheep wool to a mosaic from the Pope), family photos and heirlooms, their clothes even still hang in their closets. You also still see the way the house was renovated to accommodate Wilson’s disabilities that resulted from the severe stroke he suffered during his second term.
My tour took about an hour. There is an admission fee, but it’s reasonable at $ 10 for adults, $ 5 with a student ID, and free for kids under 12. There is also a small gift shop. If you’re craving a break from the herd of cattle, stuff behind glass kind of museum experience, this is your place.

Interesting place. Our tour guide was a retired college professor (I think) and was great. The house has a lot of the original stuff that was in it when WW lived there. You can look in President Wilson’s bedroom and see his old clothing, which still hangs in the closet. Bathroom fixtures are original as well. Worth the trip to S Street to check it out.

Thanks to participating in the «Holidays Through History» tour, I visited the Wilson House on a December Saturday evening. Wow, the garden is lovely and would be a fabulous place for a party! The entire house is quite nice, and of course they have plenty of docents who can tell you everything about it and Pres. Wilson’s time there. There is also a small gift shop, in which the coolest item (by far!) is a TALKING Woodrow Wilson action figure!!!

The only Presidential Museum in Washington DC, the Woodrow Wilson house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in the 1960s.
I really enjoyed visiting this hidden gem of a museum in the beautiful Dupont Circle area. The place is not crowded, and for $ 12 you get a 45 minute tour of the museum.
There are a few very cool things about this place:
1. You can touch the things in the home. There are no ropes and in fact the museum guides encourage you to play the piano (a piano the Wilsons had in the White House), turn the lights on/​off, etc.
2. Presidents from that era were allowed to keep all the gifts from countries abroad. There is a painting given to Wilson by Armenia after his signing of the Versailles Treaty that is very beautiful. Also some nice European art/​statues to view as well.
3. The guides, as others have mentioned, do a wonderful job and really enjoy what they do. They are friendly and will even give you recommendations on what to do next/​where to go.
I’ve visited many historic houses as I volunteered in an architectural preservation non-​profit for many years. This is one of the coolest houses I’ve been in, and definitely worth the $ I spent, even with other museums in DC being free.
Also, they rent the space for weddings and parties.

Did you know that Woodrow Wilson is the only president to reside in the District after his presidency? And he’s the only president to be buried in DC (@ National Cathedral)?
Excellent tour and museum, even for the non history nerds! Starts with a 15 minute video on President Wilson and continues with a 45 minute tour. Our tour guide, Mary Kay, was very knowledgable and energetic/​enthusiastic. You get to see the President’s office, library, and bedroom, his wife’s bedroom, the chef’s pantry and kitchen and the solarium (library:http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/WDI-w64vk2­HneLenwTrHeA?select=lCk0od4zhAPFlyznWl39dw). Most post-​1920s items have been removed from the house and there are a ton of well preserved and fascinating objects and furniture throughout the house (original desk from Princeton, tapestries, baseballs autographed by British royalty, Abraham Lincoln’s mirror, etc). Very cool, and generally a smaller tour group.
Student discount drops regular admission from $ 10 to $ 5.

The only U.S. president’s house (in D.C.) fully preserved in its original state is a favorite place to take friends and family when they come visit. It is in the Kalorama (embassy row) part of town — which is nice for guests to see — and the house provides an interesting tour of the WWI period house. For the guys who might be rolling their eyes, you will be happy to know that there are war-​related gadgets and memorabilia to give the tour an edge to it. It’s not just mamby-​pamby. Lovely house, lovely garden, lovely neighborhood: would be very cool for a wedding.
